I'm getting it and I don't even have HD. :D

(Yet.) ;)

Do your kids have an X-Box 360. If so by the HD-DVD drive for that it saves you about 400.

since the announcement came out that all the superman movies were being re-done (like 2 years ago) i have held off on buying them so that i could rejoice in my purchase of the boxset...even if it meant having to get SIII. i did prefer returns to that one even if i joke otherwise.

unfortunately, i will not be able to get it for a few weeks and i am sorrowful.

why would you buy the HD DVD's if you dont have an HD-DVD player? It's not just a matter of having an HDTV, they wont play on a normal DVD player....

I got this today along with my Ultimate Superman collection.

Great! You'll have to make sure to tell us here what you think!

I'm on the fence right now on whether I should order it or not. I don't currently own any of "Smallville" on DVD at all, so fortunately it wouldn't be a re-buying thing for me. I just am not sure if I'm into the show enough to plunge down money for it (I have seen every episode of it, though).

There are several stores at the moment selling Seasons 1 to 4 at $14.95, so if you were ever going to purchase it, now is the time.

Eh, if I'm gonna buy "Smallville" at all, it'll be on HD DVD. With Season 5 out now, it's just a matter of time before S1-4 come out, too.

Thank you though!

Cause I plan on getting the HD upgrade for my x-box, so I can play HD dvds.

So there! :oldrazz:

Do you know if it is their plan to release the other seasons on HD?

The only TV HD DVDs talked about yet are "Smallville: Season 5" and "Sopranos: Season 6 Part 1".

But this is obviously just the beginning...especially with the amount of TV shows that are filmed and aired in HD nowadays.

When is Season 6 coming out. I don't watch TV, only DVD's. I guess I have to wait a year or watch it on youtube?

Most likely, it'll be out in September 2007.

Because I have completist issues. :O

Actually, I'm getting an HDTV for Christmas, and since I need a new DVD player, I'll probably be getting one of those shortly after.

So..from what I'm reading DLP is the way to go with really large screens. Any opinions?

If you want an affordable HD Player the XBOX 360 & its External HD-DVD Drive is the cheapest next gen DVD player out there at the moment

it depends on the brand really. I have a 44" LCD HDTV and it dusts most DLP's on the market. If you want a decent DLP TV be prepared to spend at least $3K on it. I'd stay away from Plasma though, too many bugs right now. Check this forum out, these guys know a ton of stuff about them:

as for an HD-DVD player, theyre crazy expensive. You can get ones that are "HD-DVD compatible" that are cheaper but arent as high quality. You can actually go the X-Box route but unless you've got it hooked up to a decent Dolby Sound system, you're gonna miss out on a lot.

I'm actually holding off on HD-DVD for about another 6-12 months to see if it or Blu-Ray becomes the dominant next gen format. You dont want to be the guy with a $600 version of this century's "Beta Max" LOL :D

I gotta friend in the biz.. *winkwink* I was looking at a 71" set.. it's sort of ginormous, but I want ginormous. I've also been told (and have read) that I should consider getting a set from Costco. They carry a whole slew of good brands in all sizes, but the real plus is they have a lifetime money back guarantee, so when the set goes on the fritz in a few years, you can get your full amount back and upgrade to a newer set. That might be a better deal than going through my friend.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Are X-Box 360's easy to get nowadays?

The only "DLP" sets that I like are Sony's SXRD TVs. I think the screen's clearer on them, and they're affordable too. Although, I don't think they go up to 70".

But I agree w/ Hulk, I think LCD TVs, ultimately, are better. When shopping, just remember to look at the clarity of the picture as opposed to the brightness. Most stores set up their TVs to the highest brightness, but that isn't usually indicative of quality. If resolution's your thing, look for "Full HD" 1080p sets (esp. if you're considering going HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.) Let me also second Hulk's line about plasmas. They really aren't worth all the hassle.

I'm actually on the market for an HD set as well.

Hulk, what brand is yours? For the longest time, I was set on Sony's latest 50" SXRD, but have been considering going smaller and getting an LCD Bravia instead. I can get a 1080p 42" LCD set for the same price as a 1080p 50" SXRD. The benefits I see for going smaller is the fact that the Bravia's flat panel whereas the SXRD is about 13" deep. I've also been reading that, to the human eye, there isn't a lot of difference b/w 1080p and 720p when the sets are smaller than 50" or if you're sitting 10' or less in front of the screen. Also, do you notice any "screen door effect" on your LCD? That's the only other reason I've been hesitant to go LCD.

Any tips?

I actually have a 44" Zenith LCD. I forget the model number off the top of my head. It's not completely flat-panel, it's about 10-11" deep, but that's okay because I have a specifically designed entertainment "table" for it.

And I never really noticed a difference between 1080p or 720p. Then again I dont think I've looked at too many sets over 50". I didnt want a TV that costs as much as an economy car. :D

I noticed a little bit of a screen door effect for the first week or so I had my TV, but after that your eyes adjust to the image and it's not an issue.

The only other tip I would echo is dont go by what you see at the showroom. They jazz up the settings to make them overly bright and pop out at you. I'm pretty sure they're sent out of the factory like that. When you buy your TV and get it home, recalibrate the settings or you'll lose picture quality in a few months. It should also give you a clearer picture in your home too as opposed to a lit up showroom. You can go to that forum I posted above and people there have recommended "home" settings for just about every HD TV on the market.

We have a 55" Fujitsu plasma, hooked up with the jazziest Boes speakers and we couldnt be happier with it and you dont have to keep replacing those bulbs every few months.

that's only if you buy a rear projection set but it's more like every few years not every few months (unless you watch an insane amount of TV).

Apologies for "necro-threading" but I don't come around here often, and my question is related to this discussion.

Now that the whole HD/Bluray thing is settled (since the start of this thread), I was curious if anyone knew if the first few seasons of SV were shot in HD? The BluRays only start with S6, but I'm thinking that with the series coming to an end, there's going to be a full series box set at some point late in 2011. Is a full series BluRay box set possible or were the earlier seasons only shot in standard def?
