--------Prologue: Detroit Memories-------

I don't remember what happened. The first thing that registers in my mind is the falling rain, followed by the sound of cars and their horns blaring. I'm soaked through and through, not sure where I am. I try to get up from the road I'm laying on, and look around for something familiar, but there's none. Not even street signs. Wait... that coffee shop...

The young girl runs toward the sign, and as she arrives the owner just flips the sign from 'open' to 'closed'. The woman begins to knock on the door. The owner of the Starbucks opens the door.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we're closed for tonight." The owner says.

"Where am I?" the girl asks the owner, hoping she can come in.

"Detroit. But you shouldn't be out here in the rain, sugar! What's your name?" The owner asks, trying to find out more about her.

"I... I don't know."

The look of shock registers on the owner of the coffee shop.

The woman wraps her arms around the young girl and brings her inside. "You can stay here for now, until I'm finished cleaning up the shop. Don't worry, girl, you're safe here. I won't let anything happen to you... neither will my son."

After she has fixed the girl up with a cup of coffee, and watches the young girl drink, Mrs. Brown gets her cellphone out of her pocket, goes behind the counter and dials her son's number. It doesn't take long for her son to pick up the phone.

"Mom, what's wrong? Is the shop alright? Are you okay?" Mrs. Brown sighs.

Always her son to be so extremely worried about her. "Calm down, chile, there's nothing wrong with me or the shop. There is this young girl who stopped by the shop right at the moment that I wanted to close up and start the nightly cleaning... and this girl.... she.... she can't remember anything, not even her own name."

Jan was so shocked to hear such a thing happening to a girl, in fact, he wouldn't wish it on anyone, so he instantly reacted by moving out of his chair. "Mom, I'm coming over." He spoke into his cellphone. "Yeah, that's the thing that I wanted you to do. You need to take care of her for a couple of..." Then the line disconnected. "...Days." She finished, only realizing then that the connection had been broken.

In the meantime, Jan had entered his car, turned up the ignition, not caring about the song that was playing on the radio or the streaming rain and drove toward his mother's coffee shop. Truth was, that he would waiter the customers in the weekends, and let it be Friday night tonight.

Aurora Brown turned toward the young girl, who had finished her coffee. "My son's coming to pick you up. He's a good man, he won't do anything bad to you. You can trust him." She said to the girl as she took the coffee cup and began to clean a bit before her son would get here. The young girl's eyes almost glazed over, with the promise of tears but not quite giving in. "Thank you, you're so kind. I'm glad I've met such nice people."

No longer after that spoken sentence, was the moment when the door of the coffee shop opened. Aurora put a hand against her head, forgetting to lock the door even though the sign still read 'closed'. Her son's eyes took in the young girl, and he was literally frozen to the spot.

How can such a beautiful girl like that get amnesia?

"Ah, Jan, you're here. I'd like you to meet my son, Jan Brown." Aurora said to the girl as Jan stepped closer to shake her hand. What they didn't see was that the young girl's eyes briefly changed red, as they had done previously when Kara Zor-El had met Jimmy Olsen...

--------Chapter One : "Laura"---------

"Damn chile, stop staring at her! What do you expect? Her eyes to glint red?" Aurora asked her son. She really wanted to get her son and their newest arrival out of the shop so she could clean up and be home on time for her favorite soap. "Oh, it's nothing. I'm not offended by it or anything." The young girl said, and then a smile lit her facial features. Strangely she herself had felt the attraction and the way her eyes glittered red for a few seconds, but apparently neither the kind woman or the young man had noticed that.

Aurora caught the look of the young girl.

Does she like my son? Well, if so, I'm happy for him, cause he's been through a lot. He deserves some happiness.

"Oh, right, mom! Are you sure you don't need any help with the shop? I could --" Jan started, recomposing himself, but was cut off by his mother. "Shoo, shoo, I can manage myself here just fine." Jan hugged his mother. "Okay, remember, you said so." Then he turned to the young girl. "Okay, well, let's go to my house. You can crash there."

The young girl looked at Jan strangely. "Crash? What do you mean?" She asked him. "Crash, as in stay, sleep, hang out." Jan summarized, wracking his brain to give the girl another meaning of the word 'crash'. She nodded, getting the picture. She felt the wet clothes cling to her skin, so she definitely needed a hot shower and a place to stay and apparently Jan had told her everything she had wanted to hear.

Jan opened the door for her. "Thank you, Jan." Kara said with a smile. "Bye mom!" Jan said and then closed the door after they had gotten through. Instantly, Jan reached for Kara's hand and began to run through the streaming rain towards the car he had parked.

Even though it was raining, Jan was the gentleman his mother had taught him to be. He opened the door for Kara to get inside, which resulted in a smile and a nod from her. Then he closed the door and ran to the driver's side to get inside as well. He put his seatbelt on, he helped the girl with her own.

Jan glanced at her, suddenly realizing he had to either bring the car into motion or say something, so he chose the latter. "I'm sorry, I don't have any girl clothes, but I can give you some while I put those in the washing machine while you're staying at my place."

Kara smiled. He's so nice to me... I wonder how he is without his mother around. "That's fine, Jan." Kara said. That ignited a beaming smile from Jan in return, who then started up the car. Again he paid no attention to the song that was playing on the radio.

It didn't take long for them to arrive at Jan's place. Luckily, the rain had stopped, but poor Kara was still wearing wet clothes. The young Kryptonian girl couldn't wait to get under a hot shower. Then, a foreign heat began to warm her body, and she had no clue what it could be. Before she could ask if Jan had felt it as well, he had disappeared again, only to open the door for her. Kara just smiled at him as she extracted herself from the seatbelt ; she had watched Jan intently on how he secured himself in his seatbelt, so it wasn't hard for her to get out of hers. She wasn't going to say thank you again, because she didn't like to repeat herself.

Jan took her hand again and let her toward his house, opened his door and led them through. "Man, am I glad to be out of the rain and in a warm, comfortable place." Kara said smiling and before Jan knew it, she had hugged him. He could feel her hot body, obscured from view by her wet clothes against his sort of clean clothes. Part of him wanted to so badly, but he just met this girl... whose name he didn't even know.

They parted again and Kara looked up at him. "So... since I can't remember my own name, Jan...." she took her hands in his. "...what would you like to call me?"

Jan had barely recovered from the shock of the hug, and then she had startled him again with her action of locking hands. "Well, now that you mention it, I think that Laura would suit you.... Laura." Jan said.

"That's a beautiful name, Jan! Thanks!" Kara said and kissed him hard on his lips... although, that's what Jan had thought would happen... instead, Kara just smiled at him. "That's a nice name. I think it suits me." Jan blinked, wondering what had suddenly caused him to think that she would kiss him... and that hard. He licked his lips, as if the taste of her lips was still there.

"So, Laura, let me show you around the place." Jan didn't take her hand, sort of thinking that it would mess with his head a little more than he'd wanted. True, he liked Laura, she was beautiful, but so soon?? Why am I so concerned? A kiss is just a kiss, right? They walked from room to room, Jan explained some of the uses such as the coffee machine. "Shall I put down some clothes at the bathroom for you to wear while you're showering?" Jan asked her as they returned to the living room. "That'd be great, Jan. Excuse me, I'll have that shower now." She said and before Jan could respond, was up the stairs toward the bathroom.

Jan dashed to the kitchen, nervous as hell, setting up something to drink. Oh man, did he NEED a drink! Laura... was making him tense. Instead of going for the heavy stuff, he grabbed a glass of water and downed it in seconds.

Meanwhile, Laura had stripped down to nothing and hopped into the shower, glad to have finally gotten rid of those wet clothes. It had felt like weeks since she last had had a shower, yet she didn't know where that was... close to Detroit, maybe in Detroit? She didn't know. Kara Zor-El, alias Laura, didn't care, just felt the spray of hot water caress her body, lathering her body and rinsing her hair with the products available in the bathroom.

Jan was beat. It had been close to midnight when his mom had called for him to pick up this mysterious girl who had amnesia. It'd probably be better not to ask about her previous life so soon. So he began to make up his bed, thinking that Laura would understand that she would sleep in the guest room. After he had finished making up his bed, he went to the guest room to make up Laura's bed and put some clothes at her foot end of the bed, then after that was done, Jan returned to the living room. He'd wait for Laura to finish up her shower, she'd give him her clothes and he'd put them in the washing machine.

A few minutes later Jan heard a door close and knew that it was Laura who was coming down the stairs to meet up with him. Jan had been in thought about Laura, but not the kind of way you would think. He desperately wanted to help her regain her memory, but how could one do that? Surely he couldn't go to a hypnotist and get her hypnotized? No, he'd try to find another way. Just when Jan wanted to get up and get another drink, he noticed Laura...... dressed in a tight white bathrobe. She looked like a beautiful white ice queen.

"Wow, showers do a lot of wonders to the body and soul..." Laura said with a smile, as she put her hand on her mouth, realizing she'd forgotten to bring the wet clothes with her. Ain't that the truth, Laura... and a whole lot more to males who shower... Jan thought, not realizing the excitement he was radiating off himself. Then did he catch Laura's look. "Laura, what's wrong?" he asked, coming over to her to comfort her. "I forgot to bring the wet clothes." She said, for the first time showing that she was sad.

For what? For absolutely nothing. Only something as ridiculous as forgetting to bring wet clothes! That's not a reason to be sad.

"There's no need to feel sorry about, Laura. I'll just get them from the bathroom while you go to sleep in the guest room." Jan said, going straight for the stairs.
That made Laura stand still. Guest room? Did I do something wrong? she asked herself, not realizing that that would be a normal thing people who don't know eachother that well, do. Jan stopped, not catching her thinking. "Oh, and Laura? Would you like to help out tomorrow at the coffee shop? I can teach you how to operate the coffee machine and all other things?" Jan asked turning around.

Laura looked confused. "Yeah, that sounds great, Jan. Goodnight." She said and waited until Jan was gone. She could hear his footsteps to the bathroom, then back to the washing machine, and then to his bedroom. The door closed.

Laura sighed softly. She got up from the couch and went toward the guest room, let the robe fall away from her shoulders, admired her physique in the mirror, then hopped into bed where she tried to fall asleep... but sleep would not come. Nightmares about a place filled with crystals and someone trying to impale her on the crystals.... about a young man shattering a blue crystal... kept her awake. Until a silent scream echoed through the room. Her scream.

Meanwhile, Jan had stripped to his boxers and immediately had fallen asleep under the covers. What a night! His mom found a girl that has amnesia. Jan smiled in his sleep. The first thought right after he had seen her had been how such a beautiful girl could get amnesia. Maybe they'd never find out.
Compared to Laura, Jan had immediately drifted off to sleep... such a deep sleep that he didn't hear the sound of the door opening and closing, not even noticing the side of the sheets being pulled open and somebody sliding next into the bed and then the side of the sheet closing again...

No, Jan Brown wouldn't know what would hit him in the morning...
