The complete boxed set is coming out on DVD this fall - it is a 62 disc set and FINALLY includes some incredible special features!

It includes a Daily Planet Newspaper talking about one of Superman's Saves, interviews of the cast after filming the finale, 5 hours of unseen bonus features from earlier seasons and the unaired pilot of the Superboy Show.

My complaints - he's wearing the blue jacket over red shirt as opposed to what he wore throughout the majority of the series - blue shirt with red jacket. Also - where the hell is the bluray set!? Does anyone know how much this will cost btw? Talk away!

Correction: The set features the unaired pilot of a "Superboy" TV series, not the George Reeves show.

Also, current SRP is around $340, last I read.

Yeah I just realised and I returned to the thread to correct it.

Some great stuff. really can't wait for the set.

I am sure a bluray set will come out. We have to remember there is differences that go into converting footage and all that from dvd and bluray. Plus like I pointed out awhile ago. There was talk of converting seasons 1-5 to bluray. But issues where arising. They are probably still being worked at and it comes out a little later.

In the meantime, we can add a few things to the information our owners at TVGuide.com have provided. First of all, we've been informed by Warner Home Video that this release of Smallville - The Complete Series will ONLY be for DVD format, and not on Blu-ray Disc. We asked for some in-depth information about why the studio would make that decision, and we were informed that there are technical issues present in the early seasons. Here's an exact quote from the studio:
  • "The special effects were created and output for standard definition broadcast using the tools and formats of that time. Elevating the special effects to an acceptable level for HD may require going back to original film elements and re-creating new special effects from scratch to marry with the film elements, which is extremely costly."
So, like other SFX-heavy series which were finished on videotape but not made-for-HD from the ground up (such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, The X-Files, Babylon 5, early seasons of Doctor Who, and others), the first few seasons of Smallville simply aren't up-to-snuff for high def Blu-ray Disc format without paying for a pricey special effects do-over. It's quite understandable that Warner wouldn't go back and do that just now, with the economy still not where everybody wants it to be.

"Wait a second!", you might ask, "didn't Smallville - The Complete 5th Season come out in the now-defunct HD-DVD high-def format? Can't they make a Blu-ray version of it, at least?" Yes, we looked into that question as well. Warner's answer to us was this: "Although the release of Season 5 on Blu-ray is technically possible, we do not have current plans to release Season 5 on BD."

I wonder if there are new episode commentaries for the complete series box set.:super:

That's crap. HD masters exist, else how are they able to be broadcast on HDNet and available in HD on iTunes. It shouldn't be that difficult to make 1080p transfers for Seasons 1-4 (and S5 exists on HD-DVD). Very disappointed in WHV. :(

The technology exists. They just don't want to spend money on it. Cheap bastards.

I agree, it makes more sense to have the Red over the blue, but my guess is that it wouldn't look visually pleasing because the red of the jacket would overlap the red of the shield.

Here's a quick change that I did. My question is, was this a manip based using a rejected photo of Tom's head from last season's dvd cover, or if it's a new pic, because if it's a manip using the head, it's a very convincing one.

Seasons 1-4 are already available in HD... they're on iTunes - so what the hell are they on about?

Raku are those true hd copies or just sd copies slapped into letterbox/etc.... now sure it suvks. But whose to say they might not come out with bluray down the road. It could happen. But like I did point out this was an issue they been trying to work on for awhile. These things happen. As for other bonus stuff. Definately would hope for new comentaries and other nice extras.

well i was asking are those true 1080p/i hd copies. or standard def slapped with hd label and all that. Cause i seen that happen before for other tv shows/films that were sd and are slapped with hd label for video release or hd airing on a movie channel or what not. And they were not true HD.

I'm not paying that much for SD copies of the show. No way. I would have purchased a BR box set in a heartbeat. This is sad.

I already have 9 seasons on DVD....no reason to buy a complete set just to get the 10th when it comes out.

I'd really like to see that Superboy pilot.
