Well, we've had 3, maybe 4 disposable 'boyfriend' in SV, here are the main 3

Whitney

Jason

and now Oliver

Each of these characters feel like they were added for no reason, other than to provide a bit of relationship conflict, and really nothing more. These kind of characters come and go, and may have a small affect on the narrative of the series, but in the end, are simply disposable narrative devices that are eventually discarded when they run out of purpose.

Who wins the award:

*(and when someone can explain to me, why penis is a bad word, and why little children are not allowed to learn what penis means give me a shout and explain it to me)

how is oliver disposable? he has been on eof the driving forces of the season? whitney was a permanent cast member in season 1. And JAson was integral to all of season 4.

i dont think any of them were disposable.

you want disposable, talk about adam knight.

it would be a fight to the finish between this and "so i recently watched smallville"

ooh and what about disposable poster award too?

I suggest Hulk, and Kaboom. Atleast I stay on topic. Moreover, I also don't try and highjack threads so that opinions that run counter to my own get brushed aside

and as for the 'centrality' of these characters. Where are they now. Whitney, didn't last too long. Jason, his disposability went along with the disposible plot line that his character was tied into. Oliver, is yet to be proven. Will he survive til season 7 as a character (obviously the Green Arrow will go on, but will he persist as a regular member of the cast)

Why would another supehrero be a fulltime supporting character on a show about a young Clark Kent?

now now, it was just a joke dont go getting your panties in a bunch....

Whitney wasn't a disposable character. He was a decent character who the writers made disposable. His function in Season 1 was to act as a foil to Clark in regards to being with Lana. A boundary he couldn't overcome even with his powers. He was sort of like Clark's "Flash Thompson" for the first few episodes. After Season 1, the writers wanted to put Clark and Lana together on some level, so away he went.

As for Jason, he was really tied to the witches/stones plotline from Lana's end. I dont think that makes him disposable. Pretty much every guest star on any TV show is tied to one particular plot line or another. He played a big part in Season 4's plot but when that all ended so did he.

As for Ollie, his effect on Clark and vice versa, should be pretty long lasting. He's been tied into several different plotlines of the series with Clark as well as Lex and Lois. They're using him to help motivate Clark and then plant the seed that will one day become the JLA. Those certainly aren't just "disposable" aspects of his character.

agreed, but in the end the first two were conveniently DISPOSED of as you stated in your wonderful summary there. This is what makes them disposable, that when their purpose is used up, they leave the show.

Whitney got killed in a far off land, as soon as the cock block he was putting on clark started getting a little old (not that his disposal really helped that problem)

Jason was a little different, as he did tie into the witch/stones plot. But in the end, when that went away (thank GOD, sorry, hated the witch/stones plot line, thought it would have worked better as an extension of the native american plot line that just suddenly vanished, rather than witches and magic, although the magic could have been incorperated with the natives IMO) But what happened to him in the end, as soon as he became non useful, he was disposed of by a chunk of kryptonite.

so I guess the question is: Will Oliver be another disposable semi regular cock blocking boyfriend? He's been useful for 2 episodes if I count right. His other oli centric episodes just turned out to be one way tangents that didn't go anywhere. So will he be trashed as the story moves on, or will the character remain?

on that logic then johnathan is disposable since after he served his purpose he was DISPOSED of

He wont remain past Justice. He's too big of a character to keep around for the remainder of the series. Like the other hero guest stars, he's serving a purpose and leaving, only he had 7 episodes whereas the others will have had just 2. (though Gough hinted he COULD come back later on) He's not really "cock-blocking" Clark either as Clark really has no aspirations for getting with Lois at the moment, at least not on a conscious level. His purpose was far more important that that. He's there to help enable Clark not provide an obstacle for him.

Jensen Ackles was signed for (I believe) 13 episodes of SV. Jason took a major twist near the end of the 4th season because the producers had to wrap up his story arc, not because he wasn't useful as a character anymore. Had he not been cast in Supernatural, he would probably have come back the following season.

Actors come and go on SV, but it's not always because they're characters aren't useful. Sometimes, the actor requests his contract be terminated (Sam Jones), or the reason is story driven given the mythology (John Schneider), etc.

Oliver isn't on the show to be a cock block ala Whitney Fordman. His purpose is on an entirely different level. IF he comes back after Justice (possible), it will probably only be for a single episode near the end of the season, if not the season finale. I imagine Hartley will have bigger fish to fry next year with his own show.

I miss Whitney on cold rainy nights. I sit by my window and think of his perfectly quaffed hair. I cry, then I do other things, that involve his picture, lotion, and a tissue box.

I missed the last episode. Can anyone sum it up for me?

The last episode was about exposing everybody's secrets. If you go into the episode thread for Hydro and read Hulk's Review over at the Kingdom, you'll get a good idea of what happened.

gossip columnist exposes lanas secret love for clark. threatens to expose that clarks an alien. Chloe beats her ugly booty and clark and lois kiss, and chloe plays matchmaker.

LOL!

*snort*

I think Adam deserves a nomination at least. He belongs on the list moreso than Ollie.
