King of Fighters

The MovieSet Blog has learned details about the latest video game to be turned into a movie and no, Uwe Boll is nowhere near this project’s set (hey, speaking of Mr. Boll whatever happened to the release of Far Cry?) The film is called King of Fighters and is based on the SNK Playmore arcade fighting game that debuted in 1994 and has spawned 11 sequels and 13 — yeah, you read that right — 13 spinoff games. By comparison, Capcom’s Street Fighter and Midway’s Mortal Kombat brawler franchises are still in the single digits with their sequels.

Learn all the cast, crew and story details after the jump, player!

The King of Fighters movie quietly began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27 under the eye of director Gordon Chan, the dynamic Hong Kong-born helmer of Fist of Legend, Beast Cop and the 2003 Jackie Chan movie The Medallion. The screenplay is by newcomer Rita Augustine.

The movie stars Maggie Q (Live Free and Die Hard), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem), Monique Ganderton (Supernatural) and the coolest Sith Lord ever, Ray Park (a.k.a. Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace). It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world. Pardon me while I show how much of a nerd I am but it kind of sounds like a little bit of Highlander and Marvel’s Exiles comic book series. Not that I’m complaining, I’m just sayin’.

Joseph Chou, Tim Kwok and Bobby Sheng are the film’s producers. The movie is targeted for a 2010 release.

This cast and crew screams DTV B-movie. The director did THE MEDALLION, are you kidding me?

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now, KOF 98 is my favorite game of ALL TIME.
i was hoping that KOF movie will never get made, cause it's no brain that this movie will suck big time.

I just want to see if Maggie Q can pull off Mai, since she doesn't look like her nor have the rack for the role.

I think this is part of Maggie Q serving out her movie hell after doing Balls of Fury.

Raiden, push-up braw and cleavage shadow make-up.

Francoise Yip is a hottie

The premise with the alternate dimensions sounds ridiculous.

No one is going to see this.

This could be the Street Fighter for our generation!

:o

is that the official pic?
cause it looks really crappy.:o

That's her from Balls of Fury. It was the only one I could find where she's wearing something remotely similar.

Don't hate me....but I really don't think she's all that good looking.

oh ok. thanks.
but if she is playing Mai, i think Maggie Q looks slightly old to Mai.
i mean, mai's like around 20.

i hope Maggie Q isn't playing Mai. she's hot and all, but she's too flat for Mai.

It's amazing how they're making these video game movies without anyone really knowing about them.

Yeah, IMDB says Mature is gonna be in this movie as well, so I do wanna see if that's who she plays and if they maintain her somewhat horny nature from the games.

Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard) has joined the cast of King of Fighters, an English-language, live-action adaptation of the best-selling Japanese video game now filming in Vancouver.

Directed by Hong Kong's Gordon Chan, the movie also stars Sean Faris, Ray Park, Will Yun Lee and David Leitch, who doubles as action choreographer.

The $12 million action pic is a co-production of Taiwan's Double Edge Entertainment, Japan's Micott & Basara, Inferno Entertainment from the U.S., the U.K.'s Scion Films, Axis Entertainment, Convergence Entertainment and Singapore's Innoform Media.

Production will wrap in mid-January, with the movie scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2009.

:csad:

Terry Bogard in and I'll watch it. Or if Maggie's character has a really hot outfit.

Lordy no, Hollywood's gotten a hold of KoF as well? This is truly news to me.

Why can't we catch a break?!!
