..do you guys think it's more a fantasy movie than a superhero movie..? It felt that way to me, I don't know :whatever:

By the way, I really liked it :woot: and Guillermo del Toro's imagination never ceases to amaze me

Definately consider it a SH movie overall, the movie is actually surprisingly close to the comics considering the story and villains werent taken from the comics.

I read the comics a lonnng time ago, so I cannot remember this very well--I should give it another look

^The comics are superb, and I agree with Jamon that this movie was actually quite close to the comics despite not being based on any of them, read them again, they are well worth it.

I'm gonna re-read them soon

^Do, they are awesome, I recommend all 8 HB TPB's. I have only read the first Vol of BPRD, and it was amazing, bought the 2nd volume but not read it yet, but would recommend the 1st, deffo.

I think they use one too many awe-inspiring scenes.. like the rock-guy-door.. was it really necessary..?

I'm talking about cgi overuse :oldrazz: not a crime, though

I dont think they used too much at all, thought it was all awesome. The Angel Of Death was especially awesome and unsettling at the same time.

I think it's a superhero movie, mostly--but there's definately a fantasy element. Figure it's del Toro's artistic element, like how Tim Burton is fond of black-and-white stripes and swirls, and how Hitchcock managed to do a brief cameo in all his films. It's a little personal touch that's very effective.

But at the same time, like others have mentioned, the Hellboy comics are kind of fantasty too--it's just that they're grounded in reality and popular folklore and myth. And so it's really quite brilliant to see how one genius interprets another. I like that very much.

^Definately agreed, its strange this story/movie is not based on an existing HB comic, yet still manages to be quite faithful to the character and world, especially towards the end.

If it wasn't for TDK, Nuada would've been the best villain this summer.. he was fantastic.

I'd love for Mignola to do a few stories from his past.

it's a superhero fantasy scifi..why do they stick the dvd in HORROR!?

I think one of the reasons why I'm not all over this movie was because of it's tone; it's all over the place. The movie can be funny, sometimes it gets too jokey. Then the scene is dramatic, then it gets too melodramtic. It's a weird vibe.

But visually, Hellboy 2 is amazing. Just amazing.

I saw the movie more as a fariy tale then anything else...still loved it..

I kind of feel the same way, saw it over the weekend and visually amazing, but storywise kind of blah. Same way I felt about the first movie, the story just wasn't very engaging.

Exactly my thoughts.

The tone shifts were on purpose.

If you listen to the commentary or certain interviews, Del Toro has said that he wanted to play with the audience's perception of what a movie should be. He wanted to challenge perceptions of what defines a drama/comedy/fantasy film.

It's up to the audience to decide whether they like what he did or not.

^Typicall of GDT then! Personally, I dont know how anyone couldnt like this movie, especially someone who is a fan of the character/s. Plus, the tone shifts in the comic all the time!

But there's something about the movie that doesn't strike a chord with me. I don't know why; visually it's beautiful.

I think it's the dialogue. I think, with me, it's not hit the beats as it should, mostly in the humor department.

Yeah, I feel the same way...

It's why I put Tim Burton higher up my list of favorite directors (actually my favorite full stop)... He has so many different tonal elements to his movies, yet makes it work.

If feel story and an overall tone is something that Del Toro needs to work on.

I'm not a big hellboy fan, but I must say I really loved II. 9/10
