I had a disk in the drive, (I run on a Dell with Windows XP) and everything was working normally and then I heard a pop and the program stopped and said "Insert disk blah blah"

So after some work I got the tray out and my disk was in pieces. I managed to get some out but there's more in there I can't get to.

I'm thinking I should call tech support but I'm not sure what they can do...?

Any ideas? This ever happen to anyone?

If you're under warranty, then I recommend you get that taken care of. What disc did it destroy?

SAT prep course. :(

I think It's still under warranty, gonna give em a call tomorrow either way.

Ouch.

If nothing else, you might just wanna buy a new disc drive.

Saw part of an episode of "MythBusters" about that......it showed that some newer computers speed will cause some older discs to warp and explode.

Huh.

Well on the box it says 2007 Edition, so I dunno how old it is.

I had been using it for weeks now with no problems. Weird.

You need to learn to take better care of your things, Mee. :o

I was expecting-

"This would never happen on a Mac. :o"

Ive heard that CD`s can explode while in the tray, but ive never seen it myself.I cant imagine how it could happen, though.

If the drive is spinning fast enough and if the disc is defective, it could definitely happen. It's not like your computer will detonate or anything :p

This usually happens if the disc has a few slight cracks. When the disc spins up to full speed (nearly 28,000 RPM), the plastic is put under a helluva lot of stress so if it is imperfect then it can shatter.

If the PC case is at eye level, the pieces have also been known to leave the tray and a piece of plastic embedding in your eye at 100 MPH is not good.

The drive is usually toast because there's too many bits/dust everywhere.

Seriously though, sorry to hear Mee :csad:

That's unreal. I can't imagine a disk just tearing itself a part as it's running.

Dells are messed up. I was thinking it was over heated but if it was in pieces, a part of the CD-Drive is broken and sticking out. Open up your tower, take out the extra pieces and put another disc (something cheap) inside and try again. If it happens again, clan out your tower again, open the drive and see what's wrong with it, if you don't know what the inside of the drive is supposed to look like, take the computer back.
