Per D23, Tim Blake Nelson is returning as Samuel Sterns aka The Leader for the first time since 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Am I the only one pumped for this? This film shot up 10 fold in my hype hierarchy!

While I’m glad TBN is coming back, I’m not sure how I feel about having the Leader return in something that isn’t Hulk related.

It's good to see this plot thread come to a close. It's surprising to see him in a movie that doesn't have to do with the Hulk, but I do think the Leader is a type of character that could do well in this movie, which seems to have some Machiavellian schemes going on. Granted, someone like Sin could have worked just as well. But, like I said, it's good to get resolution to this plot point.

I'm definitely glad they are finally bringing him back, though the choice of where to use him is odd.

The promo/concept art looked so much better than the final design.

That would have been much better than the weird mashup of Fant4stic Dr. Doom meets Willem Dafoe's character from Beetlejuice 2 that we ended up getting.

That aside, I did like Tim Blake Nelson in this and I gather from the post-credits scene that he'll be back again in either Avengers 5 or 6 or both, hopefully crossing paths with Banner again.

I hate to say this because I liked The Incredible Hulk. But this is one of the worst
villains
for a MCU film.

I get it. For me I actually didn't think he was that bad, just at worst his physical reveal was a bit comical.
What I believe helps is that he survived. I totally thought he was going to get killed off, so I'm hoping they can utilize him further to give us a Leader as menacing as in the comics. Watch I say that and he gets Crossbone'd in the next one. 😋

I did not care for the final makeup design. I feel like they didn't know how to pull it off.

I thought the Leader was fine in this movie. It's just such an oddball choice that this wasn't a Hulk film, lol

They totally wasted The Leader, he should have been much smarter and his concept design is much more faithful to the comics than the final product. More importantly he should’ve faced off with Bruce Banner not Sam Wilson.

The way he was arrested was just so weak, he didnt give Falcon a challenge in that scene before they sent him to The Raft. Also they could have give him a better costume.

It makes no sense how he was so willing to give himself up. Also, the continuity of how he got to places so quickly made no sense. Along with why he killed the admiral. But I believe he killed the admiral so he could get access to a phone with a direct line to President Ross.

Considering how long ago we set The Leader up before coming back to him, it's hard not to find his "grand plan" disappointing and underwhelming.
You would think he would have an ulterior plan and that getting Ross to become the Hulk would merely serve as a distraction or help further his ultimate plan of achieving something. Like you bake the revenge motif and wanting to get back at Ross with also using that time when Cap is distracted to do something else which was the plan all along.

But no he really just wanted to see Harrison Ford hulk out.

That’s what I assumed re: killing the admiral in his home too but I don’t think it was ever explicitly confirmed.

Sterns turning himself in to Sam in front of Walter Reed hospital was…jarring. I suppose he wanted to turn himself in so he could expose the truth, but how did he talk to reporters after being arrested? Surely he would have been taken straight to a military black site. Alternatively, if he spoke to reporters / leaked his story prior to turning himself in, why turn himself in at all?

And was Sam waiting for him? All of the sudden, without call or signal, military forces are there and waiting on Sam’s command to arrest Sterns.

Honestly, it probably would have worked better if, after killing Dunphy to hide the truth about the gamma pills, Sterns personally attends President Ross’s press conference (hidden amongst the gathered press) to ensure the truth comes to light and Ross ruins his career; especially after the failure in the Indian Ocean.

Sam, who’s watching the conference live, suits up to fight Red Hulk. While he fights him, Ruth takes down Sterns before he can sip away again.

TBN was much less annoying here than in TIH and added something. I didn't mind the look either despite what I'd heard ahead of time.
