Social Relevance of the Dark Phoenix Saga

Hi all,

Doing a paper for a popular culture class and I have chosen to discuss the relevance of the Phoenix Saga as my topic. I've got some basic ideas for what to discuss in terms of Jean acting as a moral template (she ultimately recognizes the threat she poses and sacrifices herself for the sake of others), the significance of her being a woman (and how she becomes an avatar of emotion and destruction), and the fact that it is a major character being killed in a very popular medium (exploring how that makes the message much more meaningful etc.) Just wondering if anyone out there can point me in other directions. Thanks for any help from anyone!

I should add, I want to explore how the Phoenix Saga demonstrates the dark side of human nature, and wondered if anyone had anything to say about that. Thanks.

(I'm more after the source material than the animated series or movie versions of the story, I just figured more people would see it in this forum.)

All I can say is congratulations on your courage to write about the Phoenix Saga in a paper for a popular culture class.

In so far as how the Dark Phoenix Saga demonstrates the dark side of human nature, I would look to the notion that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely (which is noted by Xavier himself during the Dark Phoenix Saga)… Jean Grey is unable to cope with her immense, newfound power and it drives her to a dark place, corrupting her and causing her to not only betray/hurt the ones she loves, but herself as well…

Please post your paper when you've completed it... this sounds very interesting. If you don't want to post it on the board, PM me with it.

Good luck!
