For years now some Greeks have been trying to revive the worship of the Olympian gods. Once they campaigned to have the Acropolis discontinued as a tourist site and use it for worship instead.

Now I will admit I'm not a pro-Hellenist. I don't care for it anymore than I'd support the dumb Novecento angle of Mussolini's campaign. I spit on all those beliefs that anybody from that region was ever descended from the gods. Yes - I spit on that! Ptoo!

Putting that aside I think these people are just delving in some misguided nationalistic belief that the old ways are better. It's not just the fact that the majority of Greece is Greek Orthodox. There's nothing left of the dead religion to apply to contemporary Greece. They're even worshipping the wrong icon - Prometheus.

This isn't new and hasn't been for decades but it does occasionally flare up in the news when some journalist finds out about it. There are people who will worship in any religion, no matter how old, extinct or even fraudulent it is.

Every religion is only as fraudulent as all the others, by objective standards.

If there are people who genuinely believe in these gods, and there is enough demand, let it be revived. The religion only died out because Thessalonica made it the state religion of the Roman Empire.

Neo pagan religions and many old pagan religions never went away. The number of worshipers just fluctuates.

What I meant was fake actually. As in solely meant to gain something from the followers. The creator of the religion knowingly made it up for their own personal gain. I could list a few notable examples but that might offend people.

This sounds promising, but I'm kinda neutral to Prometheus. Call me when they start throwing parties in honor of Dionysus the god of wine.

    :awesome:

But you know what, in all seriousness I don't see the problem with wanting to reconnect with ancient traditions. I find many of them fascinating, and even then there are some universal truths that can be gleaned from mythology. Now many Greek Orthodox will undoubtedly throw the First Commandment out there, but I think that as long as it's not outright "worship" everything should be copacetic. There IS a difference between worship and veneration.

Is it just a coincidence that last night there was a HUGE lightning storm in South FL and I'm reading this article today? Seriously, I thought Zeus was on vacation here, it was a terrifying spectacle :hehe:

I already practice it. to me it is the one true religion. it's the oldest there is. they shared it with the romans under different names. and it's a job kind of where they all have a domain which always made more sense to me than just one god who can be bipolar sometimes lol. to me, it's just cleaner. that and I'm, you know, a demi'god. serious on all of it, half serious at the end. I'm an orphan, don't know my folks - I could be an alien too for all I know lol.

Because I am. I joke about who I could be, but then yet again, I don't know from who or where I come from - so science fiction elements are... possible...

It's that extra inticing lair of Greek mythology to me. The whole demi-god one because if someone is, how could they know?

I think I found a religion I want a part of. I'm going to start praying to Hercules.
