As I read all around the board....I see constant complaints from many many HYPSTERS about the comic related movies and TV shows being made. Some say it's too many, some say they aren't made right.....I say they have no idea how good they have it.

I was born in 1957....

I started reading comics in '62....

I finally got a live action comic adaptation in 1966 (BATMAN starring Adam West) - 4 years after started reading comics...not bad

The next live adaptation was Lynda Carter as WONDER WOMAN in 1975 (we won't count the 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby since it threw away everything anyone knew about her and even made her a blonde)....13 years after starting reading comics, 7 years since the end of BATMAN.

So....when I turn 18, I have had 3 seasons of Adam West as BATMAN....and the first TV movie of the actual comic book version of WONDER WOMAN TO WATCH....AND....there was no home VCRs to record them to watch again, no DVDs of them to buy to watch them again, no cable or satellite channels that show them in reruns. I watched them ONCE...maybe if lucky they reran some of the BATMAN episodes during thier first run so I got to see some episodes twice. But that was it....basicly one viewing. Oh, and the comic related things made before I was born (George Reeves TV series as SUPERMAN, the SUPERMAN, CAPTAIN MARVEL, BATMAN, BLACKHAWK) movie seriels from the 40's and 50's...they too were not shown on TV nor did we have VHS tapes or DVDs of them to watch...you occasionaly read an article about them in a magazine.

Now, lets look at what someone who would have turned 18 this last June of 2010 would have had the chance to see......

I was a comic fan who got basicly nothing during my childhood...most of you guys have gotten an amazing amount of things...and yet you are the ones who constantly complain. The old sayings are true...you don't know how good you have it until it is taken away...and....if you give them everything they want, they will not appreciate it.

Rant over...

Great post C. Lee!

I fully agree and expect people to jump in soon saying "oh, so we're supposed to accept bad or half asses films/adaptations?", even thought that would mean they missed your point.

Some of those films/TV shows I was too young to have seen and out of the majority that I did see i've either liked or loved them and thought others were just ok. Minus the TV shows there have only been a small handful that I thought weren't that great.

Very good post, C. Lee.-

I was 5 when I had Superman the Movie and it was great. At the time I had Batman TV series, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and Incredible Hulk on TV too. Plus some Batman, Superman and the classic 1967-1970 Spiderman cartoons.

I consider myswelf lucky since Batman has evolved with me. As a kid I had the kid-friendly Batman TV series, as a teenager I had the cool and dark Tim Burton's Batman - which, much as STM, was another fantastic experience - and as an adult Nolan has taken Batman into cinematic adulthood.

And of course there has been so many other superhero movies. And yes, most of the time I have problems with the kid-friendliness of many of them. But hell, I've been lucky.

You're our superhero, C. Lee. :applaud

Even back in the 90's, it seemed like comic movies would never get made (or made right). I'm amazed that we have so many films coming out. Heck, so many non-comic fans are irritated with the number of flicks they have to deal with. That should say something.

just curious if you see how these 2(in bold) statements contradict each other?

just curious if you see how these 2(in bold) statements contradict each other?

I see I didn't make myself clear enough...the reason that was said that way (and the reason such movies as STEEL and CATWOMAN were not put in my main list...which I know isn't a complete list too....I'm sure more movies will be added by people wanting to show I made a mistake, and they won't realize that all that does is reinforce my rant)) is that when the vast majority of posters agree that a movie has strayed so far from the original material that it is basicly the character in name only, then it didn't need to be listed. I was sure that since I mentioned WW...some list purist would bring up the woman called Wonder Woman in that TV movie which came first (it was made in 1974, Lynda Carters pilot movie was in 1975). So...I was basing my stated omission of that particular movie not so much on my own personal opinion but by what I have read as the opinion of 99% of the comic community.

But in any case....I was waiting for the complaints and nitpicking about my statements to roll in...thank you for the well thought out and expressed rebuttle...be sure and find any misspellings and let me know too.

I didn't expect you to list every movie made. Just noticed a contradiction on an otherwise fair gripe. But as you say it's not your opinion so you can disregard my comment. I do appreciate the civility of your response, the patronizing comment at the end was a nice touch.

Anyway to the topic at hand. I can only speak for myself and say complaining about a movie is not me taking the genre for granted just hoping for it's progression. Example, for every catwoman and elektra the studios become more weary of female leads. The stories were just not what they could have been, so future films with female leads were probably passed on. Anyway complaining about minutiae is just harmless fun, I wouldn't read to much into it.

If you've been here as long as C. Lee, you see A LOT, which makes your statement kinda funny.

If it were "just" fun, mods wouldn't be needed on any fan site.... The people he is talking about are those that treat it as "life or death". As I said, stick around as long as he has, and your last statement will seem funny to you as well.

the first statement of that paragraph clearly states
I can only speak for myself.
im talking about when I complain about minutiae. Im sure i have post where i pointed out some tiny detail, so im saying it just something i noticed. you don't need to read into it more than that.

Seems a bit weird to start a post basically poo pooing criticism on this basis.

I am very very happy that we have had so many superhero live action portrayals. That doesn't mean I have to like them all.

I like some of them. I disliked others. Some make me very angry.

Does that mean I am ungrateful to live in a time where Superhero movies abound?

Not at all.

I'm VERY happy with the output of comic book stuff.I grew up on the 90's cartoons and now I have awesome movies. While there might be a few that suck for every Catwoman,Elektra or Blade Trinity there is a Dark Knight,Iron Man or Spider-man 2.

It's true. It's very true. But it doesn't change the fact that Daredevil sucked. :o :p

When comic book movies are done right I endlessly praise them but likewise I'm critical when comic book movies are done wrong.

I don't think I should be grateful when Hollywood serves up garbage. It's called having standards.

Yeah, I grew up in the age when the only good superhero movies we had to watch were the first two Superman ones, apart from that , the only serious good live action superhero fare we had was the Hulk tv show.
So, when I see complaints along the lines of 'Hugh Jackman was too tall to play Wolverine, and he should have displayed the exact character traits I read him having in *this* set of comics, not *that* set of comics that don't fit my argument.', and people who say the Spider-man of the movies is not the one from the comics because he does not make enough quips....or that The Dark Knight is just a plain old cop drama with a guy in a bat-suit who happens to be there....then I do think that people are taking the movies for granted, and do not appreciate the fact we have some extremely good adaptations out there.
Not everyone is going to have their own exact personal idea of what the comic book character is on the screen, but people also forget, these characters have been through various writers and permutations, and are not always consistent on the page as a result either. If they nail the essence of the character and don't do anything to subvert the core drives of the character, then they are doing their job.
