A sequel to the 2010 racing game will be coming out for all major platforms.

A new gimmick will be added to the game, allowing players cars to change into a boat or plane depending on their surroundings.

Sonic and friends are officially heading back to the track later this year with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. As the title implies, the cast of Sega characters drive transforming vehicles this time around, with screenshots showing off planes, boats and, of course, cars. The roster now includes more favorite Sega characters, including Vyse from Skies of Arcadia and Gilius Thunderhead (A.K.A. "the dwarf") from Golden Axe.

The game also promises dynamic tracks and a "fair weapon system" that allows players to block or evade incoming attacks. One of those tracks is based on Panzer Dragoon, which makes this racing sequel the closest thing to a new Panzer Dragoon game in a long time (well, almost).

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will make its way to Xbox, PS3, Vita, 3DS and PC this holiday.

And in a strange turn of events, Nascar racer Danica Patrick will be playable. (And in November, she will drive a Sonic-styled Nascar! Sweet.)

Here is the confirmed character roster so far:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Dr. Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Miles "Tails" Prower (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Amy Rose (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Knuckles the Echinda (Sonic the Hedgehog)
AiAi (Super Monkey Ball)
Beat (Jet Set Radio)
BD Joe (Crazy Taxi)
Amigo (Samba De Amigo)
Joe Mushashi (Shinobi)
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Danica Patrick (NASCAR)
Vyse (Skies of Arcadia)
Thunderhead (Golden Axe)

I hope Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue returns. (And maybe add Lan Di & Ren!)
And Ulala needs to be in this too.

Lastly, as a SEGA-Nerd, this little tidbit makes me very curious.

I don’t think I can talk about the details, but yes, there’s going to be lots. Our development studio is staffed by Sega nerds basically, so every bit of fan service they can possibly do, they will do and then some. So there’s going to be loads of hidden things. The final unlock in the game is like the biggest piece of fan service you could possibly want, so yeah – when people see that, they’re going to love it.
