Wow.

The press release comes from Sony:

CULVER CITY, Calif., December 12, 2013 – In a move to forge a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker on screen, Sony Pictures Entertainment, in association with Marvel Entertainment, is developing several new projects in the Spider-Man franchise, with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard to collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films that will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio.

The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films. Under the deals, the studio announced that Kurtzman & Orci & Pinkner are writing the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which the studio hopes Webb will return to direct; the film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. In addition, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies. They will expand the franchise as Kurtzman & Orci & Solomon will write the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct; also, Goddard will write, with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise. Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will oversee the development and production of these films for the studio.

In tapping these five writers, the studio and the producers are guiding the future of the franchise with the writer/producers who have each played significant and key roles in developing such highly successful franchises, films, and series as Star Trek, Transformers, “Alias,” “Fringe,” Men
in Black, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, World War Z, “Lost,” Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods, and Marvel’s upcoming “Daredevil” series.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films.” Arad and Tolmach added, “This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with Alex, Bob, and Jeff on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With more than fifty years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling. Until now, we have approached each film as a separate, self-contained entity, but with this move, we have the opportunity to grow the franchise by looking to the future as we develop a continuous arc for the story. That is what Alex, Bob, Jeff, Ed, and Drew will do in this unprecedented collaboration, and we’re excited about the directions they are taking the character and the world.”

The most successful franchise in the history of Columbia Pictures, Spider-Man is embraced all over the world. The four Spider-Man films to date have taken in over $3.2 billion worldwide.

At least we know now that Sony won't reboot Spidey for a LONG time. This franchise could go on for the next 10-15 years unless its starts to flop. But I think they are putting so much time and energy into the series that it won't happen, especially now with Marc's blueprint for the franchise. I hope he stays to direct TASM3.

Well I can't say I saw a Sinister Six movie like this coming.

I'm excited for this. I think they're setting things up just right to make the Spidey universe work. Bring it on :)

I'm confused as to how you do a Venom and Sinister Six movies, both are bad guys so how do you form a movie around them. Venom I can maybe see, make him an anti-hero or something. But S6 what do you do? Show Norman getting a team together to beat Spidey then end? Or will these titles be more like Spidey vs. movies? Either way... This is amazingly awesome news

This is becoming absolutely ridiculous. Make the next one good, and then announce a sequel. We're getting four more Spider-Man movies and we still haven't seen 2 yet.

Does this mean that Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti are signed on for the spinoffs, or will there be new actors as well? Though I can't imagine a Sinister Six film without Spider-Man...

They cast them with the Sinister Six in mind, so barring a contract dispute, they'll be back.

I have no idea how this is going to work. No idea.

I wonder if venom is going to show up in a solo movie before or after he appears in an asm installment.
Venom could have a cool franchise though, if they play their cards right they can do one about eddie brock and its sequels about flash Thompson.
As for the Sinister 6, I can see them being assembled in a solo THEN showing up in spiderman.

Sony is playing a dangerous game, but if they're cafeful they can really make something special happen within the world of ASM.

So are these two spinoffs seperate from TASM franchise? So we'll have 4 TASM films to build up the Six and then a spinoff? It would suck seeing Andrew do all 4 TASM films with all the Six build up and then cast someone else to face the Six.

I just don't understand how you build a movie around assembling a team when there's no threat for them to be combatting unless they take it into some direction where Spidey is almost portrayed as the villain through their eyes. Actually, that might be an interesting point of view for the movie to take.

Just a note to remember - So far, Garfield is only contracted for three movies...

As far as Venom is concerned, it seems like it would be better to introduce him in one of the numbered installments and then base the movie around him wanting to be a hero in spite of his nature. And of course there's always the Flash Thompson angle they could explore at some point.

Well if the Venom Movie is going be rated PG-13, and does good, there's a high percent chance we might see a rated PG-13 or rated R movie based on Carnage.

there are people who are laughing about this saying its sony creating the poor mans MCU well in all fairness to sony for even trying to do these ideas shows alot of guts

i don't think anyone has to worry about the sinister 6, i mean we will likely see them fight spidey, thats something you can't NOT do this series, its staring you in the face

I don't know how a Sinister Six film would work, but still it intrigues me more than the prospect of a Venom movie. I just find Venom an inherently boring character, I haven't liked him since I was a kid in the 90s.

Venoms mini was pretty cool. I like the idea of covering the spiderman mythology but with a more vengeful and even 1940sesque movie monster type way.

The sinister six without spidey seems silly. With spider and it's asm3

i'm loving the world we live in as far as comic book adaptations right now

I'm not sure if the competition/influence that Marvel Studios has provoked to expand universes in these other companies a good thing or not yet. Hopefully things work out. Interested to see how they do a Sinister Six movie, especially with Goddard behind it. Hoping they don't just project their own villain/superhero structure into the project and actually take the huge opportunity to do something unique with it.

Only thing somewhat upsetting about this news is the way they (and lots of blockbusters these days) keeping tapping into Kurtzman and Orci as a writing team, considering how subpar-to-terrible most of their scripts are--even Star Trek '09 mostly coasts on the direction and cast if you ask me. And even when they do okay, why not just try someone new? I guess they're sort of doing that with Drew Goddard though, who's been in the market but hasn't oversaturated it yet with his presence.

I'm expecting the Sinister Six movie to basically be like a Foes of Spider-Man comic.

Agreed 100%. It almost assures that the movies won't be as good as they could potentially be. They'll most likely be lazy and somewhat dumb.
