Comedy Central said it will ensure its venerable and rule-breaking animated series “South Park” will top the 300-episode mark with a three-season renewal deal that keeps the enduring program on the Viacom-owned network through 2019.
Comedy Central ordered 30 new episodes, taking the series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone through its 23rd season. Comedy Central said that will make “South Park” cable’s longest-running scripted primetime series. The show’s 19th season bows Sept. 16.

I firmly believe that if there is another animated show that will end up breaking the Simpsons record for being on air it's South Park

I don't know.

But at least South Park hasn't become a total shadow of its former self like The Simpsons.

The last two seasons of South Park have been fantastic imo. 10 episodes seems to be a sweet spot.

It's still amazing, and as long as Parker & Stone keep doing what they're doing it always will be.

In case anyone missed it...

I was worried about the show not coming back this year because let's face it, 2020 has given Trey and Matt multiple seasons' worth of material and we've still got three months to go. Still no news about the next season premiere but the fact that they can produce an episode (safely, I assume) is a good sign.

So, are they going to both sides the argument on this one as well?

I feel like if there’s any show that can be done from home, it’s this one.

Absolutely. I feel like one of the biggest hurdles would have been securing top notch recording equipment but since it's just Trey, Matt and three or four other voice actors they probably were able to get home setups with ease.

South Park is not the show to watch if you're looking for a stance to be taken. Their whole thing is about screwing with everyone. It's just the right seems so freaking nuts now that making fun of the left for "overreacting° is less funny.

Trump has killed satire basically because the USA is crazy town now.

That’s why I’ve always loved South Park, they make fun of both sides

I am fine with making fun of both sides. I do that myself and I use to enjoy South Park. Then I grew up a bit and realized that they decided it was a good idea to mock global warming concerns as if it isn't a thing, and tried to argue that Trump wasn't that big a deal, and well.... yeah. The jokes about ninja stars in the eyes and Casa Bonita didn't feel quite as funny anymore for me.

Again, making fun of both sides? Fine. Equating both sides? Gross and dangerous BS imo. John Oliver mocks the left all the time, and he's on the left. That isn't what South Park does. They do work to normalize the right, which is pretty ****ty at this point imo.

I get that. Especially since Trump can do anything or say anything and his base still likes him. Doesn't matter if he represents any of what they say their values are, he blames mexicans and black people for everything, so he's the man in their eyes. Oh and he hates Muslims so even better.

Really liked the pandemic special. Since I'm not a student and don't have to use Zoom for calls, I'm left wondering if students ever really do try stuff like Cartman did with pretending he was frozen. Or parent teacher conferences. How the hell do you even have those virtually? Either way, some really good, observational stuff.

I feel like Stan was speaking for a lot of people who are over lockdowns when he said that if you want things to go back to normal, then you have to just go out and start doing it.

Of course, though, it always comes back to Randy. You know, even though South Park isn't doing the serialized structure anymore, I do like that Tegridy Farms is still a thing. But hopefully a vaccine doesn't actually involve a combination of semen and marijuana.

Yeah there are grown adults that pretend their zoom calls are messing up so all they have to do is just keep it on and not participate. I confess I did it once. :o

Pretty good first episode back. I see Token might have a larger role this season.

Token going to the hospital due to COVID (i.e. gunshot) haha

I enjoyed the special. Even though I'm starting to get tired of Randy being a weed farmer, I still thought his antics with Mickey in China leading to COVID was hysterical.

South Park to return with hour-long vaccination special

It's cruel that in times where this show has a seemingly unlimited supply of insane real life content to draw inspiration from, we've only gotten two hour-long specials so far, but I suppose it's better than nothing at all. I'll be tuning in when it premieres, just like I did with the Pandemic Special.

South Park dealing with Q freaks could be awesome.

Matt and Trey don't always hit but they certainly don't normalize the right, and they've copped when they've made mistakes. The global warming stuff in particular was revisited in the show. It's rare that a show runs this long and past its original vision. South Park is an offensive 90's cartoon, so I think it's done a pretty good job adapting to the times considering.

Must be a difficult line to walk when both political sides suck but one is also much worse. Like, how on earth do you balance the contempt for both?

Matt and Trey have gone on record saying they're Republicans in the past but they've definitely got no love for Trump. Look no further than Sassy Justice to validate that. They've also said that one reason they haven't mocked Trump often is because they felt that they couldn't make the situation any more ridiculous than it already was. But realistically, they epically shot themselves in the foot by making Garrison Trump. Sure, nobody thought he would win back in 2015-2016 but there was still a chance and sure enough, look what happened. Garrison as Trump was funny for a couple of episodes but the joke ran stale and as a result of the 2016 election, they were stuck with that. He had a few funny moments here and there since, especially in the Pandemic special, but they essentially lost one of the better characters for four years to set up a joke that lost steam even before November 2016. I think even Matt and Trey hated that they turned Garrison into Trump because they rarely used him throughout most of the Trump administration. He turned up in the 21st season but he had one appearance each in seasons 22 and 23. Making Garrison normal again is towards the bottom on the list of pros of Trump losing the election, but it's still a big plus for the show.

Agreed all round. They dismissed Trump as a threat early and completely botched it with Garrison standing in. Season 20 was a disaster in general. I didn't think about it before, but it will actually be nice to have Mr. Garrison back. A definite low-key pro to that knob being gone.

Well, I'd never say no to another South Park hour long episode.
