Cherry Road Films and Darko Entertainment announced today that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will star opposite Seann William Scott ("American Pie" films, The Dukes of Hazzard) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge) in the science-fiction thriller Southland Tales for writer-director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). Sean McKittrick will produce under the Darko Entertainment banner he co-founded with Kelly. Cherry Road principals Bo Hyde and Kendall Morgan will produce. Executive producers are Matthew Rhodes and Judd Payne of Persistent Entertainment, Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Inferno Distribution, and Oliver Hengst of Academy Film Gmbh.

Principal photography is slated to begin on August 1 in Los Angeles. Cherry Road Films has officially greenlit the picture with co-financing from Universal Pictures International, Inferno Distribution and Wild Bunch, with Universal distributing in most foreign territories through the UIP banner, and Wild Bunch distributing in France, Benelux, Spain and Switzerland. Richard Klubeck of UTA is representing on the domestic front.

Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Johnson will star as Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now (Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark (Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

"Dwayne, Seann and Sarah each have an adventurous spirit and I am honored that they have put their faith in me," said Kelly. "The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick."

Also joining the project are most of the key crew from Donnie Darko, including director of photography Steven Poster ASC, production designer Alexander Hammond, costume designer April Ferry and editor Sam Bauer. Critically acclaimed artist and producer Moby will compose the music for the film.

In addition to the feature film, an expanded version of Southland Tales will be presented as a nine-part interactive experience with the prequel saga to be published as six separate 100 page graphic novels, each written by Kelly. The graphic novels will be released over a six month period early next year leading up to the film's release with the feature film comprised of the story's final three chapters. In addition, the film's official website will be one of the largest and most elaborate ever designed for a feature film. "The graphic novels will work in tandem with the website, creating a more epic multimedia experience for those interested in taking the plunge," added Kelly.

Actually it sounds really cool......

Interesting, Gellar as a porn star.

yeah,i had heard about this a while ago. It sounded really weird and also really cool

I'm really interested to see how this turns out, especially with the cast...

I've been following this film for quite some time, I hope its really good.

The Rock and Sean William Scott seemed to have good chemistry when they did the Rundown.

This sounds extremely unusual yet extremely mindblowing at the same time(except for the cast  ). They could of picked alot of better people then the rock, sean william scott and sarah michelle gellar. I mean alot alot. The website is freaky as hell!!!!! :ghost:

The website is site is weird and awesome just like the Darko site. I have been waiting for this movie for a bit now. I like the casting of the Rock, IMO he has gotten better with each role he has taken!

The official site for director Richard Kelly's follow-up to his cult hit DONNIE DARKO, titled SOUTHLAND TALES, has recently been updated with the teaser poster, which you can see below, and the cover pic of the first of six graphic novels that he intends to release as a prequel to the film. While the site doesn't have the cover pic for the other five graphic novels, it does have the name of all six (I'm not gonna tell you - you have to go to the site to find that **** out!). Details of this project are slim but there are a few tidbits that have managed to slip out. We know that it'll be pretty friggin epic (considering the six graphic novels), it takes place during a heat wave on the 4th of July weekend in 2008, Sarah Michelle Gellar plays a porn star named Krysta Now who in the movie is developing her own reality show, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays an action star with amnesia named Boxer Santaros and Sean William Scott plays a police officer who "holds a key to vast conspiracy". We can assume that their paths will cross at some point and that some decidedly weird **** will happen. Click on the poster below to go to the offical site.

There are also some sister sites that have come online. Gellar's Krsyta Now's official site can be found over HERE. A company in the film named Treer Products also has an official site over HERE and finally, this site references something from the movie (it's also found on the official site). Many thanks to David for the great heads up on this stuff.

"Nobody rocks the cock like Krysta Now!"

The above line is from Richard Kelly's sophomore directorial effort SOUTHLAND TALES when referring to Sarah Michelle Gellar's porn star character. Kelly's been keeping a pretty tight lid on anything about this movie but lucky for us that there are crafty bastards out there that can get their hands on the script and offer up a small review for us. The crafty bastard in question is someone over at Twitch Film. I'll reprint part of the review below but it's significantly spoilery for me to issue a WARNING. So, LOOK AWAY NOW if you don't want to be spoiled. If not, read the small snippet below then click HERE for the full review.

Set in an alternate reality: (Los Angeles July 2008) not unlike the reality in Philip K Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle," internet is outlawed and regulated, and the army patrol the streets and watch over the sea, ohh and there's also a doomsday machine involved - It's the story of Boxer a successful action movie star with amnesia, Krysta Now a porno star and an actors collective, The Lighthouse Gang...

Thanks for posting that green:up:

I dont want to read the full article to avoid spoilers but it sounds pretty interesting IMO and Buffy as a porn star ???

The reviews not that spoiler heavy, atleast IMO...it sounds awsome.

It sounds like a movie that wants to be a bit too weird. (if you know what I mean..:p)
