Warner Bros. to Make Space Invaders Movie?

Source:Los Angeles Times
March 3, 2010

The Los Angeles Times reports that Warner Bros. Pictures is negotiating to acquire feature rights to classic video game "Space Invaders</A itxtvisited="1"> from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game.

"Space Invaders" was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. The game was later licensed for production in the United States by Midway.

The project would be produced by Mark Gordon (The Day After Tomorrow, Saving Private Ryan), Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Guymon Casady.

Movie versions of "Missile Command" and "Asteroids" are also in development at Fox and Universal, respectively.

i'll be honest, this is ONE old school video game adaptation that has..something going for it. you can do so much with this than a movie based on Asteroids or friggin' battleship.

I'd watch a Galaga movie. :cwink:

Space Invaders are Coming to the Big Screen

Producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers" movies) and Odd Lot Entertainment's Gigi Pritzker have teamed up to bring the classic arcade game Space Invaders to the big screen. Di Bonaventura is also producing the upcoming Asteroids adaptation.

The duo is now searching for a writer to adapt the game, which was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. The game was later licensed for production in the United States by Midway.

As with Asteroids, the game does not have a built-in mythology, so the filmmakers will have to come up with a captivating universe.

Di Bonaventura is also a producer on the "G.I. Joe" movies.

Something simple and fun in the vein of Independence Day would be welcome, they just need to not spend sequel money on this film like John Carter, Battleship and Lone Ranger did, as well as not make it too dumb and full of noise as latest invasion films.

Yeah I would spend no more than 130-150 on this thing. Even that might be too high.

The thing is, they should attempt at creating ships and aliens that look like they came from the game.

I don' want a radical departure where it's super realistic overly designed. Keep the same profiles and shapes.

Agreed, give it to a fan of the game and make something fun.

The feature film based on classic arcade game Space Invaders is dropping down and reversing direction as it aims to blast its way to theaters thanks to the imagination of writer Dan Kunka (12 Rounds), who Deadline reports will pen the script for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Kunka is a hot Blacklist writer who gained traction with his 52-page, dialogue-free spec script Yellowstone Falls, in which wolves battle zombies. That script was sold to QED in a bidding war, while another action script titled Bermuda Triangle sold to Warner Bros. and producer Charles Roven.
Space Invaders was designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. The game was later licensed for production in the United States by Midway. Warners began the process of acquiring the rights back in 2010, while the iconic spaceships from the game will feature as opponents in this summer&#8217;s classic 8-bit video game-themed adventure Pixels.
Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell have all signed on as producers of Space Invaders, with Jesse Ehrman overseeing for Warner Bros. Pictures.
