Legendary Picks Up "Dark Ghostbusters" Story Spectral

Source: Heat Vision
November 4, 2011

Ian Fried has sold Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures on his story Spectral.

Heat Vision says it's a "dark" and "gritty" take on the Ghostbusters formula.

In Spectral, a special ops force - trained in hunting the supernatural - go up against ghosts that have taken over Manhattan.

Fried got some Hollywood attention over the summer when his Florence Nightingale and Jack the Ripper script, Gaslight, made the rounds.

This sounds really cool, I like the idea of a more gritty ghostbusters.

I like the fact that it's going to be much darker than Ghostbusters and not a comedy.

Hmm, interesting. Wonder how this'll play out.

The script, originally written by George Nolfi from a treatment by Ian Fried, was rewritten by John Gatins and has Nic Mathieu attached to direct. It follows a special ops force that has trained in hunting the supernatural. They come up against ghosts that have taken over Manhattan.

Mortimer, who will play a CIA mission leader, currently stars on HBO's "The Newsroom".

I hope this movie is being made with 80 million in mind. too much of a gamble if the budget's too big though I'm happy it's original. OR rather, it's a new IP.

This movie finally comes out this August.

The fact the film was filmed almost two years ago isn't a good sign.

Isn't this one of those movies that got lost in the mix when Universal partnered with Legendart?

The film will now be released in 3D on March 11, 2017.

I was thinking about this movie the other day. I had no idea that it had already been filmed.

It was me James, the author of all your pain.

At least that's something. Sounds like a stinker.

I have doubts that it will work with a special ops force. outside of 'The Predator,' I think it's a mistake to make the protagonist(s) too capable or formidable.

Considering the talent involved the first time director must of really messed up for this to end up getting dumped on Netflix a few years after it was filmed.
The film was shot primarily on location in various streets and buildings in Budapest, Hungary, relying extensively on practical effects and locations for an authentic, gritty atmosphere firmly planted in reality. The film has a score by Junkie XL (Batman V Superman and Deadpool). The futuristic weapons were produced by Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop and the VFX was done by Weta Digital, overseen by Oscar winners Joe Letteri and Erik Winquist.

Hopefully we get a trailer soon atleast.

I really felt like this would've been a fun flick to release to theatres. The plot is kind of video gamey, but I think it sounded cool.

Ok, this looks entertaining as hell. Friday night Netflix, with a 6 pack of beer was the perfect launch platform for this.

Reminds me of that crappy movie The Darkest Hour from a couple years ago with Emile Hirsch
