Spider-Man 4 General News and Discussion Thread

Zendaya is the "real" MJ.

The fact that some think she's a decoy and the real one is still on the way is exactly why I hate what they've done. They're not going to dump a major star like Zendaya, push her aside, bring in a new actress that looks and acts like the comic book version and refer to her as the real one and Peter's true love.

Such optics would look terrible.

Michelle Jones Watson is it.

She will never be the "real" MJ because MJ's name is Mary Jane, not Michelle Jones. She isn't even MJ in name only, only initials. She is a completely different character.

Whether or not the "real" MJ shows up later doesn't make her character the actual MJ.

For all intents and purposes, she is the real MJ for the MCU. Doesn't matter what you want to think about her, the movies are treating her as the real deal. They are not gonna shove someone like Zendaya out of the picture, just to bring in some other person who also happens to be named MJ down the road.

Then why establish her last name as Watson in No Way Home? If she's a completely different character why give her the exact last name as a character she supposedly has nothing to do with? This is the same s*** they did with John Blake in TDKR.

John Blake isn't a real Robin either.

I personally think they were initially undecided on how much she was MCU Mary Jane, and have gradually but clearly moved towards her being a clear incarnation of that character as the MCU Trilogy progressed, who just has a different name behind for her initials and the conventional re-imagining the MCU does of the comic versions of the character. In particular, I think she was inspired by the Ultimate Comics version of MJ with a side of the Classic Marvel MJ’s “Shields herself from getting emotionally hurt, and secretly knows Peter’s Spider-Man but is genuinely drawn to him nonetheless” aspects.

No, she doesn’t have the red hair, or the model or actress aspect… I like her so far…

…I just also think it would be hilarious and cool if they leaned into using more Classic Marvel attributes for MJ rooted in the MCU version of the character to “torment” Peter (in a very “anger OMD supporters” way, I mean.)

This MJ could, if they wanted, easily react to having her own freedom and some ambiguous memories and mildly obsessive questions about waking up on Liberty Island after a Spider-Man Battle and no recollection of how she got there with stuff like:

- College kid MJ embraces her independence by embracing some of her own personal style - maybe going a bit punk-ish - and dying her hair red, which Peter is worried he finds too interesting when he’s trying to avoid being too close to her… and maybe makes a smooth business decision to make some Instagram model money - leading to Peter being tormented by knowing her Instagram model handle but thinking he shouldn’t use it.:eheh:

- Since MJ has this weirdly quiet and stuttering but very cute boy she’s curious about always showing up for coffee and seemingly too shy to flirt with her like she can tell he wants to, she starts calling him “Tiger” to tease him in a sarcastic, mildly acerbic and frustrated way.

- Since she’s not stupid and deduced who Spider-Man was previously, she starts doing that again, but this time they play up some of her trust issues because she’s meeting this Peter for the first time again, and so she sometimes feels drawn to him but resists going for broke.

I doubt they would actually do it, but it’s the sort of stuff I would definitely do, all while maintaining this MJ’s heavily sardonic and sarcastic nature (thus the “punk girl” idea.)

Think she's a great choice. If Gwen Stacy was included from the beginning in the Homecoming trilogy, in high school, do you think Elle would've been a perfect casting choice then? Especially since in this scenario, she will end up as Spider-Gwen.

I think she would have made a pretty good Gwen during the Home Trilogy .

I could see her pulling off the Spectacular Spiderman type of Gwen during the Twenty Teens

Now she can rock the retro , Romita era ,college look

Does it ultimately matter though? Gwen could have been played by any number of people then or now. I don't think there is much use scrolling through fan casts that would have been good 7 years ago

With Nic Cage reprising his Noir role in live action, I wonder if we'll see the same with other characters like Gwen or Miguel? Both actors are perfect.

Perhaps Miguel O'Hara is a distant descendant of Marc Spector in the MCU.

No, but it's interesting. Just wanted Frodo's opinion

The rumors for this movie have been random as heck.
I think the tug of war between Sony and Marvel is real, and maybe the randomness of all the rumors is a reflection of the mess this movie might be having behind the scenes.
I wouldn't say I'm worried but it's a shame they don't have the focus on what the movie should be.
The ending of No Way Home made me think we were gonna have a true Spider-Man classic solo adventure but I guess multiverses and money talks.

Yeah.
Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get a true , non multiverse romp, Spiderman film, until 2028 , at the earliest, though, 2029 is more likely imo .

Along with events such as a writer's strike and the actor wanting to take some time off to avoid burnout. The rumors could also be deliberate disinformation.

Plenty of those in the Raimi trilogy.

The last one was 18 years ago, my friend. I think it might be time to have one of those back.
They've reached the full potential of interconnecting Spider-Man with Marvel characters (and more to come), as they should. But enough, I miss Spider-Man on his own.
