Marvel has released an adjusted release schedule for its upcoming slate of films, confirming a May 2011 release for Spider-Man 4, and changed dates for Thor, Captain America and The Avengers.

As the press release below reads, the new dates push Thor and The Avengers back a year each, allowing for more production time. The move of The Avengers also clears up the question of how it and Captain America could be in production at the same time while (presumably) starring the same actor as Captain America. It should be noted too, that moving The Avengers release to 2012 takes it out of direct opening weekend competition with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Marvel's press release reads:

Paving the way for the production and release of its multi-character superhero film, THE AVENGERS, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL), announced today an adjusted release pipeline for its self-produced feature film properties that reflects the first time individual Super Hero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture. Separately, Marvel Studios confirmed today that Sony Pictures Entertainment will release SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 6, 2011. Additionally, Marvel Studios has revised the release dates for THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA as part of its release strategy for an uninterrupted road to THE AVENGERS, now debuting May 4, 2012.

A Marvel character-based film will now launch the summer box office season for three years in a row, from 2010 through 2012.

“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character THE AVENGERS film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios.

Sony Pictures’ and Marvel Studios’ SPIDER-MAN 4 is slated for May 6, 2011. To date, all three motion pictures in the phenomenally successful SPIDER-MAN franchise have generated nearly $2.5 billion worldwide theatrically.

Below is Marvel Studios’ 2010-2012 updated release schedule for its slate of self-produced and financed feature films:

Marvel Studios Feature Film Pipeline
Film/Character - Prior Release Date - Current Release Date
IRON MAN 2 - May 7, 2010 - May 7, 2010
THOR - July 16, 2010 - June 17, 2011
THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA - May 6, 2011 - July 22, 2011
THE AVENGERS - July 15, 2011 - May 4, 2012

The release date for IRON MAN 2 remains unchanged. IRON MAN 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster film, IRON MAN, which has grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.

Well now we have a date which is awesome.I'm anxious to see who the vllain or vllians will be.I'm hoping for a Lizard/Kraven combo.

Sort of expected SM4 to outmuscle Cap from May 1st... hopefully it's for the best.

That really isn't that far away. Especially when a production as big as this is rolling out. So, maybe a June or July start date in 2010?

I have zero interest in this movie as of right now. I'm ready to be wowed, Raimi!

2011? They better get on the ball in making it, then. :spidey:

IIRC, filming is slated to begin sometime next year. This year will be all about the script and casting.

Ok now that it's official Raimi and the gang better get it in gear and start working on a soild storyline etc...

I want to see Spidey 4 blown the previous films away in all areas.

I'll be over the moon if they equal (never mind surpass) number 2.

2011 = Great Movies

Dark Knight Sequel

Spider-Man 4.

The Boards will be going crazy that year I can tell you that

There was a rumor the next Batman movie won't be until 2012 due to Nolan's Inception movie.

those rumors i believe are false. Inception comes out in 2010. Nolan can do both

Damn, start counting. Now we just need more announcements like casting and the villains and I can't freaking wait. We'll probably get something this year with that.

I hope to God Raimi and co can come back and blow all of us away with our expectations since the thrid film. I do think he'll want to make a much better experience. Plus he made a smaller film in between which is always good to do, so I think he's ready to come back.

What a nice birthday present this will be.

May 2011 Sounds a lot farther away than it actually is, here's hoping it comes quickly.

IIRC, filming is slated to begin sometime next year. This year will be all about the script and casting.

The script's been in development since early 2008 (Vanderbilt was unable to work on it when he got the gig in late 2007 because of the WGA strike), plus add in David Lindsay-Abaire's rewrite/new draft when he came on in late 2008.

If Sony's going to film the fourth and fifth films back-to-back, they need to have someone writing the fifth movie this year so that they can build sets and begin previsualizations next year in addition to the fourth movie. Once Raimi finishes up Drag Me to Hell and fulfills the contractual promotion tours, he'll most likely be working full throttle on S-M 4/5 for Sony after that.

I'm surprised Sony hasn't pegged a 2012 release date for S-M 5 -- I guess they can aim for a late June release a la S-M 2.

SM5 June 2012 sounds about right. I think it will underperform big time though being overlooked by Avengers and possibly BB3. Not to mention that the latter film of a back to back pair usually flops or underperforms.

PS: Shouldn't we be moving some threads to the SM4 forum?

Great news! Like someone mentioned before, the years from 2010 to 2012 will be the most anticipated years of all time. Spider-Man 4, Iron Man 2, TDK 2, Avengers, Captain America, Thor...Can't wait!

You sure? Because I'd geek out if Bats and Spidey came out in the same summer.
