I was referring to the actual Avengers (Cap, Tony, Thor). After Avengers 1 came out, a certain percentage of fans complained about the Avengers not showing up in Iron Man 3, The Dark World and Winter Soldier. I was not one of them mind you but there were people that brought this up.

Plus you have the inevitable post Avengers 4 talk of people speculating where the OG members are (granted one of them may die but I doubt all them will).

In short I think its easier to explain Spideys absence than other characters.

Is anyone here getting pumped for the Insomniac PS4 Spider-Man game? I feel like that game is going to keep me busy and entertained for some time, which would also make the wait for A4 and FFH a bit easier.

It's been a long time since we've had good Spider-Man video games, so I hope this one delivers.

Personally I've never had that problem. I just assume that the individual Avengers members didn't consider the threat big enough for them to all team up over it.

Plus you have the inevitable post Avengers 4 talk of people speculating where the OG members are (granted one of them may die but I doubt all them will).

Yeah, I can see that being an issue. Perhaps rotating the line-up in future films would help people get used to the fact that it may not be the same Avengers team each time?

Definitely. It's the Spider-Man film that most felt like watching the comic-book on the big screen.

I think Spider-Man 2 is the best, I don't agree that Homecoming is the best film. I think even Spider-Man 3 gets the shaft on those rankings, ASM2 should be well below it because it's trash but that's IMDB for ya.

Edit: I'm sure Far From Home will be another fun, swell movie, but I think just with the premise of taking Spidey out of his usual setting (like they're visibly trying to shake things up so it doesn't get stale) it doesn't give it the best chance of being a definitive Spidey story, if that makes sense. To me the things that really work about SM2 and Homecoming are the focus on Peter's day to day struggles living his life in his town and there's good cinematic representation of those essential Spidey tropes. Taking him across Europe for a movie feels like a novelty thing at first to me, a fun one, but still. Now if there's meaningful narrative ties for Peter to the Europe setting that's it's own thing.

They can still do that with a globetrotting narrative if it's part of a school trip.

I disagree. Spider-man 2 is a much better Spider-man film. Holland may be the best actor to play Spidey, but the overall movie feels the least like a Spider-man movie to me.

I agree. New York is crucial to Spider-man. It's his version of Gotham, the city that made the hero.

There is a reason Insomniac focused so much on it in the new Spider-man game. I even heard a previewer refer to New York as one of the most important supporting characters. I'd be inclined to agree.

And yet, for some reason, Marvel has decided to take this Spidey out of New York for two movies in a row.

Marvel's attempt at differentiating from the past two franchises has hindered Tom from being the definitive Spider-man. I liked Homecoming, but it was a bit too different. I'm hoping Far From Home can feel more like Spider-man, but the setting does not help. Marvel is yet to top Raimi/Maguire imo.

I love Homecoming, but is easily changed way more about the Spider-Man mythos and characters than SM2 did. Not saying that is a bad thing necessarily, just that it is true. That said, I love both movies.

Spider-man 2, if I forget all I like about Spider-man comics, is probably the best movie made of the character. But as a Spider-Man movie, it’s one of my least favorite due to all the things it changes about core aspects of the mythos and the characters involved.

Personally, I find it to be much closer to the source material than most CBM's. There are scenes pulled straight from the comics.

There were some scenes, but core elements of characters were changed in ways I couldn’t get behind. Mary Jane acted nothing like her comic counterpart, and for the worse. And while Molina gave a great performance, I fundamentally disagree with a Doc Ock who is a good person deep down. Otto Octavious never needed evil AI to get him to do bad things. Adding that aspect dilutes what makes him the true anti-Peter Parker.

Then the added problems of Raimi not understanding the duality between Peter Parker and Spider-man...well, like I said, it’s a great movie, but as a Spider-Man film I find it very lacking.

The Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy is great, but none of those films feel like pure Spider-Man. He never quips whilst in the Spider-Man suit for a start. Spider-Man: Homecoming is like they threw the comic-book pages into a generator and it created the perfect film version.

I don't think that's true. There's no Ned knowing his secret in high school, Iron Man making his suit, him dealing with it's instant kill mode and Aunt May being hit on in the comics as far as I know. But Raimi Spider-Man does quip, just not much.

"That's a cute outfit. Did your husband give it you?"

"It's you whose out gobby. Out of your mind!"

"Here's your change!"

"I have a knack for that."

I can only think of one real quip in Homecoming:

"Wait a minute. You guys aren't the real avengers. I can tell, hulk gives it away."

I don't see how their shifting of Mary-Jane is any worse than Ned in SM H or that it's worse. Same with Ock and Vulture.

Honestly, even Michelle is closer to 616 MJ than Dunst's. She's snarky and uses that to hide her insecurities. That"s arguably the most important part of MJ.

Tom's Peter is much more innocent and soft than any Peter I've seen. The Raimi tone felt pretty spot on too to me. It had more of an edge to it, which fits the scope of the stories as I know them. The getting his suit from IM, Ned knowing in high school etc. For Michelle, she's got a vibe of MJ, but everything else Raimi hits with the charcter better to me and ideas of her playing popular to hide her emotions of her rough homelife is present there too. MJ's insecurities are a focal character point in the Raimi movies for her I think.

Not true. In SM1 Peter is shown to beat up Flash and enjoy it, when the wrestling promoter's robbed, Peter is shown to have a sense of pride at letting the robber go. When he fighting Bonesaw he's shown to make fun of and enjoy doing so, his opponent. When Ben's killed, Peter's unbridled rage bleeds through and he hunts him down and breaks his hand and when he falls out the window Peter just stares coldly down at him. That's just the first one. Much less innocent than Tom's.

Ganke isn't Peter's friend in high school. There's a story reason for it, but it's still a difference.
