Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 1

If you just had a better understanding of what is needed to make a spectacular spider man game, you'd recognize why that trailer was more than any true Spidey fan could ask for. Insomniac knows how to make a game and it's shown in that single trailer. If you watch that trailer and come away not wanting to snag a PS4 for that game, then you just don't know what it takes to make an amazing Spidey title. It's an issue I figured would happen as there's plenty of comic/Spidey fans that aren't necessarily gamers or know the industry so they have an idea for a Spidey game in their head that just isn't possible.

Could you elaborate on this? What do you think makes a great Spidey game? For me personally the biggest and most important thing is about the way he moves and web-slings and I'm still iffy after this trailer.

I mean, this has to win game of the show right? It's probably like a year away from release and it already looks this good.

Easily the game of the show. Not even close.

Only negative is the 1 year wait. Insomniac is still in the process of figuring out the combat mechanics.

Kinda secretive about Peter, but he'll play a big part in story, no limitations. Lol at the poster who said they are using Beenox engine.

Nope. Just 2018

There's a very Batman Arkham game feel about the way some of this mission/combat plays out & that's a good thing because both the stealth & combat system of the Arkham games could lend itself to a whole host of potential superhero games.

For me the most disappointing thing is that this is a PS4 exclusive, I own a PS4 but to be honest I'd prefer having this on PC.

I wonder was this part of the deal that allowed Spider-Man's inclusion in the MCU that Sony could have the exclusive rights to the character's use in video games.

I don't think it was part of the deal. I hate exclusives myself, but what are you going to do? I'm sure people will buy a PS4 because of it.

No, you will not be playing as Miles Morales.

After that really incredible Spider-Man gameplay demo at Sony's E3 press conference, we've all been itching to learn more about the game. While Insomniac isn't fully ready to divulge immense amount of details on the PlayStation 4 exclusive superhero title, we got some tidbits that should satisfy some people and answer some questions.

Speaking with Geoff Keighley, creative director on Spider-Man Bryan Intihar talked about the story and open world of Spider-Man. When asked about how open the game will be after the fairly linear demo, Inithar confirmed it will be open world and explained how Spidey will move throughout the city.

"It's a sprawling Manhatten, as soon as you load up the game you can go everywhere. It's open, it's not like we're hiding parts of the city. When he's chasing the helicopter, that's our city. You can swing around in it as much as you want. The idea is that no obstacle should be in your way." he said. " We saw the parkour elements and even when the water tower is destroyed, you can adapt to those situations."

When discussing the story, he said he could talk about it a little bit. He also made sure to confirm that that is Peter Parker in the suit, not Miles Morales like some speculated after seeing him at the end of the demo.

"It is a unique universe, it's not based on any of the movies. This is a brand new universe we've created alongside Marvel. Our Peter, I want to clarify that is Peter Parker in the suit, he's a bit older, he's 23. So he's been doing this for a while, he has a level of mastery. Think of an athlete in the prime of his career. At the same time, Peter Parker is struggling to keep his life in order. He just graduated college, he's got a job, those kinds of conflicts, that's how the best Spider-Man stories come out."

Intihar continued by talking about the villains and how Peter thinks even when he's dressed as Spider-Man.
"This [demo] is early on in the game, he's already taken down Willson Fisk who we saw but a new kind of gang has emerged, the Inner Demons. As they're going around, going after different Fisk territory, we learn through this who the leader of the Inner Demons is who is Martin Lee. The thing I said about Peter and Spider-Man's world colliding, there's a reason why when he gets to the top he doesn't say Mr. Negative, he says Martin Lee. In his head, Martin Lee runs the food shelters, Martin Lee is Aunt May's boss who works at the food shelters. That's as much as I'm going to say about the story, it's a big story."

After being asked about how essential Peter Parker is to the game and if there will be any playable Peter Parker sections Bryan Intihar confirmed Peter himself is a major part of the story and maybe even teased that we may get some one on one time with him.

"I can say Peter Parker is represented really well in this game. I think the big thing for us is we kinda say it's a story about the man behind the mask as much as the man in it and Peter is very intricate to the experience whether it's in story or even in gameplay."
Spider-Man will release exclusively on PlayStation 4 in 2018.

I bet Mr. Negative is turning Spider-Man evil at the end.

The best game of E3 for me (after The Lost Legacy).

And I really dig the costume.

I feel gutted. that did not look good. the graphics were good, but the gameplay... what happened? Why does the web zip still look that janky? What's up with the offensively boring quicktime events? And why is there zero sense of momentum when he's swinging?

I'm shocked, how is this acceptable? I'm genuinely kinda sad about this...

I still don't dig the costume, but the game itself looks like a blast.

The big thing I was concerned about going into this was the web swinging, and like others, I can't say I'm enthused about what I saw in that regard. There's still time, but...

Yay Miles! I've suddenly started caring about this. I hope he's playable

It looks amazing (pun intended).

That was the best Spider-Man sequence since the train fight in Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man's movement and physics look great, so incredibly fluid, especially in combat.

Absolutely cannot wait for this! So glad I'm a PlayStation guy for this one.

Apparently they are playing the game tomorrow? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes they are. They have a handful of people playing the game for people to watch/report. So we'll get slightly different versions of it this time. Maybe we'll see some more of the swinging.

Sorry to hear that, the quick time events did seem a bit much but I don't really know how else they could do those big cinematic moments, and hey I still think it's better to have some interactivity instead of just watching a cutscene.

The swinging did look a little slow but it flowed really really well. I'm sure there's more to it than what we got to see.

The web zipping is definitely the same idea from Beenox's games but that isn't a bad thing, it was a good method to get around the environment for stealth. The combat also looked really good, you have to keep re-watching the gameplay to see everything Spidey is doing in the moment. It seems you can either slow down time to help dodge or it's like the Bayonetta witch time dodge mechanic and he can shoot a web at an enemy while dodging. Also he webs a guy launches him in the air kicks him towards the chain fence and he sticks to it. That's really cool!

Gotta say though, not thrilled by the Miles cameo at the end. What are they trying to say with this? That they'll kill Peter later on in a sequel? That's not good... or that they're going to introduce Miles as another Spider-Man alongside Peter so they can have co-op action in the later games? Spider-Man reddit wasn't too thrilled about him either, they said "can't we have a new Spider-Man story without cramming Miles in there?" Or "great Spider-Man's first triple A game and they shove Miles in it". Can't say I disagree, was never a fan of multiple Spider-Men.

Yeah, honestly the whole sequence was incredible, it had that excitement and exhilaration that the Raimi movie set pieces/ action scenes had.

The trailer looked awesome. Amazing graphics and I really liked the gameplay. I wonder how they can have graphics this good in a open world game? It looked so good. The only thing I didn't like was the web swinging. It looked too slow.

Any word on if any of Spidey's "friends" will drop by?

I'm hoping this game will be like the modern equivalent to Spiderman 2000 where other heroes like Captain America, Human Torch, Punisher and Daredevil showed up for cameos.

Wouldn't surprise me, having Fisk in the gameplay made me happy, could see some Daredevil cause of that but it's up in the air at the moment.

Love the environment interaction/destruction. Also Yuri Lowenthal sounds reeeeeally good as Spidey.
