Since the reboot, everyone has been saying that the Raimi films did not give Peter Parker a sense of humor or sarcasm. Here I would like to discuss any of the moments that he does actually have this type of personality.

Spider-Man 1
While Peter is entering the ring with Bone Saw, he says "That's a cute outfit! Did your husband give that to you?!"

Spider-Man encounters Green Goblin at the Daily Bugle while attacking Jameson, who starts to speak. Then suddenly Spidey webs up his mouth and says "Let mom and dad talk for a minute!"

Spider-Man 2
Of course everyone remembers Spider-Man saying "Here's your change!" as he throws coins at Doc Ock in the bank fight.

When the two kids spot Peter doing a back flip to avoid getting killed, they ask him how he can do that. His response was, "Uh... Work out, plenty of rest. You know, eat your green vegetables."

After saving two kids from getting hit by a car, Spidey tells them, "Hey, you two. No playing in the street. See ya!"

After saving Aunt May, he responds with "We sure showed him!" Aunt May responds with "What do you mean by "we?"

Spider-Man 3
Before Spidey and Sandman have a quick battle, he says "I guess you haven't heard! I'm the sherif around these parts!"

I can't think of anymore for Spider-Man 3. I'm not going to count the lines he had after getting the symbiote.

Another Spider-Man 2 one:

Doc Ock: "You're getting on my nerves"
Spider-Man: "I have a knack for that"

In SM3, there was a scene where he pours sand out of his shoes and says,"Where do all these guys come from?"

There's also the moment in the first film after he drops MJ on a roof garden:

"Well, beats taking the subway."

He does actually display humour when it's appropriate, it's just that many of Spidey's appearences are serious situations.

I didn't mind Raimi's version at all when it came to "funny" Spidey. Spidey had his quips and comedic moments here and there. I've never been a big fan of overly comedic Spider-man anyhow, whether it be in comics, films or whatever.

This thread just proves that there WAS humor in the Raimi films. It was just more subtle.

The humor in Raimi's movies was anything but subtle. It was over the top and in your face most of the time. Spider-Man's humor, when it was there, was more subtle.

I meant to say that Spider-Man's humor was subtle.

I wouldn't even say subtlety is the problem. What over-shadows this element is that Raimi's films have a lot of humour at Parker's expense, making him look foolish. He gets some quips, but it's hard to look like a smart-ass if you also look like a dork all the time.

I don't remember the early comic books really displaying Spider-Man as a smart-ass or sarcastic guy. Didn't they develop that character trait later on?

Not sure. I'm not all that familiar with the comics.

No, he was always a smart mouth from the start. In his first meeting with Doc Ock he smart mouthed the hell out of him. It's what made Ock's victory and b*tch slap on him so much sweeter.

I also remember in Spider-Man 3, Spidey says to Eddie Brock "See ya chump!"

Frankly, I think everything except the red part was very good and in-character for Spider-man. The red part might be in-character but it was stupid from Peter to throw that dumb joke while he knew the thieves were making off.

I always felt there was a more mythic feel to Spider-Man in Raimi's films rather than the quirks of the comic books. In the sense that Peter almost felt like a Shakespearan hero or part of some greek tragedy kind of thing rather than the wise cracking science kid he is supposed to be.

And I mean... while Spider-Man as a comic book is quite theatrical and cinematic I think those films pushed that idea very far, almost leaving out the fact he is just a science nerd who gets a kick out of being Spider-Man because he says what he wants.

In SM1, after saving Mary Jane, Spider-Man says "Well, beats taking the subway! Don't mind her, she just needed to use an elevator!"

I think that Peter really felt like that nerdy science wiz at the beginning of SM1. As we start getting into SM2, he begins to lose that a little bit, and he is just a poor guy that happens to be Spider-Man.

Don't forget the two elevator scenes in Spider-man 2 and 2.1

those were pretty funny...:yay:

That wasn't Spider-Man's sense of humor. The Raimi films had plenty of comedy, but that's not what this thread is about.
