What if I told you that Michael Crichton wrote a novel before he died, that has yet to be published? What if I told you that Steven Spielberg, director of Jurassic Park, was developing a big screen adaptation of Crichton’s unpublished novel?

USA Today reports that Spielberg has hired David Koepp, screenwriter of Jurassic Park, to write a big screen adaptation of Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes. Spielberg plans to produce the film, and is considering directing. Steven has apparently always wanted to direct his own pirate film, and this might be his chance.

This could potentially be quite amazing. Hopefully it's more along the lines of Master and Commander rather than Pirates of the Caribbean. Plus, it's Michael Crichton. It's gotta be good.

I'm really psyched for this. I hope it goes ahead. I would love another adventure film from the man who made it an art form.

Sigh, if I had twenty dollars for every movie Speilberg was "planning" to helm and then ended up dropping out, I'd be a rich man.

Rose Red
The Secret of Monkey Island
Return of the Jedi
etc. just to name a couple.

what the hell is the secret of monkey island?

The second best computer game of all time. The best being Monkey Island 2. He was involved in producing an unmade animated MI film around 2000 I believe. Some of the material produced lead to POTC's production a few years later (the same writers were involved, and MI was partly inspired by the original POTC ride).

This sounds awesome. I might just pick up the book. No doubt POTC's success has opened he door for these movies again. but how can you create another pirate world without people drawing comparisons to POTC. I thought it captured the pirates in a great and fresh way. And Spielberg possibly helming a pirate film would make me see it alone.

Spielberg did a pirate movie. It was called "Hook".

Koepp can be either hit or miss with me so I don't know how I feel about this. I'd much rather see the Lincoln biopic and Interstellar before this.

Sounds interesting for sure :yay:

Agreed. No matter how good this movie sounds, I'd rather see his Lincoln biopic pick up steam. I really hope his Harvey remake doesn't come to pass. It's such a waste of his talent and a pointless remake in general, but what remakes aren't useless these days?

Anyone know what Pirate Latitudes is about?

A Spielberg version of this would be incredible. I can't understand why Hollywood hasn't made a movie from MI yet. Well, yeah I can (POTC).

If MI were made now, it would just be seen as a parody of POTC, rather than it's own story. :csad:

I know, and it sucks. I wish Hollywood had started to take game movies seriously a decade or more ago and we could've had an MI movie. As it is, we'll probably have to wait another decade or more until the POTC effect wears off on the public.

Monkey Island would be awesome.

Guybrush = Will Turner + Jack Sparrow
LeChuck = Davey Jones + Barbossa
Elaine = Swan
Voodoo Priestess = Tia Dalma
Vegetarian Cannibals = Cannibals
Undead = Undead

When I found out Dead Man's Chest was going to have a Voodoo Lady in a hut in a swamp, I was like :wow:

I think this sounds fantastic and I prefer it to all the other projects Spielberg has been circling, basically this seems like a Pirate heist movie which is an awesome combo, I'm definitely gonna buy the book :up:

Now thats a great news. Spielberg + Crichton = Amazing

And no, JP doesnt require another sequel so I dont want him to do that. Im glad he, cameron and Jackson arent ****ing for easy money and latching onto recognizable franchises, but are doing something new instead

The last book of his I read was Prey and it was really good. I hoped it would be turned into a movie. I will have to pick this one up. He does a really good job historicaly or at least he did with Timeline. I'm glad the Bearded one is doing this.

Reading the description on wiki it sounds fantastic. I should get this book.

And Spileberg taking on a more serious pirate project (and Hook was awesome) should be so damn cool. I hope he directs. He should get back more into the imaginitive stuff he did back then.

Anyone read the book yet? Does it lend its self well to being adapted into a movie? Is it like POTC? I got the book for Christmas, or should say I picked it up with a giftcard I got from my parents for Christmas. Going to start reading it tomorrow.

Let me know how it is Darth. I read the booksleeve a few days ago and it sounded like there was a lot that was going to be going on in the book--a very dense plot, if you will.

It is one of the best books I have ever read. I have to say though I don't think he ever intended it to be published. It seems more of something he wrote for himself. It is very action packed with character that you care enough about but don't get to know wholly.
