Is anyone a fan of this site?
I love it. Even I don't always agree with their opinions that have the freshest, funniest take on movie reviews. The podcast are great too. I started listening after I saw their Seven Pounds review on youtube back in 08

Listened to them a couple of times then stopped. They're a prime example of why I dislike the internet at times. Just like most critics, I agree with them at times and other times I don't. I just don't like how the average A-hole thinks they're professional critics due to the internet giving everyone this giant soapbox.

I would rather read or listen to the reviews of well read professional critics than a bunch of average joes. To be honest one of the main reasons I don't care for them, as well as other wannabe critics is that they are seemingly trying too hard to be cool and hip constantly throwing in unnecessary puns and jokes rather than doing what they're supposed to be doing...informing the audience of the movie. I don't give two ****s about your sense of humour or in some critic's cases, your vocabulary. I just want to know if the movie sounds decent or not.

Basically, these guys are no different than if a few friends of mine got together with me and we started doing reviews on the internet. It's just silly thinking that people will actually give a damn about your sight when it's one out of hundreds.

Well, you're wrong, Figs.

If you asked them right now, they will tell you that they are not professional critics. They will tell you that they are a bunch of average joes. They aren't pretending to be anything other than that and I don't know who or what gave you the idea that they were anything other than that.

So, I guess they just aren't your cup of tea.

and oh, I loove spill.com. :D I've been a fan for almost 2 years probably.

Figs, If your friends are funny then yeah you should make your own film reviews

I like that their not critics that they think for the most part like average joes. How many professional critics will say something along the lines of: "this movie isn't good, but rent it on DVD and get drunk and have a a great time watching it.

There not uppity, there not boring, they make it fun

I've been keeping up with them on Youtube for about a year now. They are hilarious, and I generally agree with their reviews.

Not really, it's my opinion that I don't care for reviews from average joes that throw in unnecessary humour trying to be cute and funny. I just read your next statement and will answer that below if that's what you're referring to about me being "wrong".

I know they are a bunch of average joes, it wasn't like I said they were professionals but bad critics. I was just saying that I prefer to read certain well written critics over average joes. Not trying to say they were something they're not.

So, I guess they just aren't your cup of tea.

I guess not, but since you're a big fan and you seemed to have taken a tiny bit of offense to my original post, I will say that it's nothing personal or biased towards them. I dislike most average joe reviews...unless they actually are reviewing the film in a serious and educated manner.

I get that people like that and certain comments like that are ok with me, they're final thoughts on the film basically. It's the stuff in the middle that can get annoying, the jokes and silly banter.

I don't think they're boring either I just get the vibe from some amateur critics that they try to hard to be hip it seems.

I have to agree with Figs to a point. I like the Spill guys well enough but but can't listen to them too much because they come off like they're trying too hard to be funny.

Anyway, the robot is my favorite one. :yay:

so what makes an average joe's opinion less important that some jumped up journalist's. just because he's been published, yeah sorry no thanks.

i've lived my life in the art world and trust me i'd rather listen to the average joe's opinion that someone who thinks he/she knows everything

I don't watch them really go to "should I see this movie?"

Hell no. If I want to see it I will. People either complain too much or praise too much. Everyone's opinion is different. I think their reviews are hilarious, even when I like or hate the movie they are reviewing. I don't agree with everything, but mostly I have the same feelings they do.

Co Sign thats why I watch them

That's my main reason for not caring for them as well as a lot of other amatuer critics.

I never said that your average joe's opinion was less important but that most of them are not well read in the world of film. I like my reviews to have a bit of depth to them.

Also, what exactly does "i've lived my life in the art world" mean? It's not impressive to me if that's what you were going for. I should have clarified in my original post that when I typed this "or in some critic's cases, your vocabulary" that was meant towards certain professional critics and not really your average joes. Just because I would rather read from some professional critics does't mean I like them all, I actually hate the pretentious ones, the ones you referred to when you said they think they know everything.

It's quite humorous how some of you seem offended that I don't care for the Spill guys all that much.

What kind of reaction do expect when you don't provide a good reason? Your dislike boils down to, "they try too hard to be funny", and that's kind of a lame reason; especially since they actually are funny.

The thing I like about them is that they are an older group of guys commenting on a movie and since they aren't really "professional" I guess other that Carlyle (C. Robert Cargill), they don't have that kind of stuck-up and preppy on films like I've seen in other podcasts...They can really be opinionated from time to time though, but I guess we all are..

I don't really find it to be a lame reason necessarily. As for what kind of reaction did I expect. I didn't expect people to take it personally, at least that's what it seemed like.

I don't hate the Spill.com guys, I just find them a tad bit annoying for the most part is all. I know many will disagree but those are just my feelings on it.

I watch Spill's reviews on Youtube because they're hilarious. That's about it. It's a bunch of guys joking around about a movie they saw, occasionally giving the odd criticism among their humorous commentary.

Yeah, I initially was drawn to them based on their animated reviews, which are arguably still some of the best animated video reviews on the internet today.

I didn't really get into their podcast stuff until later..

ok first i was not directing my post to you personally if i was i would have quoted you. it was a general question that i felt was retaliative to the thread.

as for the life in the art world, i was just using that as an example maybe i should have explained myself better, i meant i have studied art for most if not all of my education and have had a lot of experience with so called "professional" critics, and some of the crap they believe and spout.

and i still do not understand why someone's opinion is more valid because he/she is a "pro". yes some have a valid opinion which they can back up but quite a lot seem to be ego driven.

i've always wonder what would happen is some of the great artists be they painters, photographers or film-makers who are no longer with us say if they heard what the pros say they were "symbolising" in they're work.

i'm not that fussed if you like spill or not, personally i enjoy there reviews but not always the final result and if we all agreed with them it would be boring as hell

Let's do this!!!!

Love the website. Discovered it a little more then a year ago through IGN.com. Clicked on a link to one of their reviews because the cartoon characters caught my eye, and found it to be hilarious. Shortly afterwards, started listening to a lot of their past reviews. Doesn't really matter if I agree with them or not on a particular movie, as long they're funny, which they usually are.

Not too long after going through their video reviews I found out about their podcasts, which are even funnier. Let's Do This is currently my favorite podcast to listen to. Love that Co-Host 3000!

yeah Im getting hooked on their reviews (thanks to Indrid Cold)

its always entertaining and pretty fun to watch. The audio reviews and their audio blog is even better imo.

I always did love that site. It's loads of fun, interesting opinions and great animation. :)

does anyone know why Carlye stopped doing reviews?

That's a good question. I just assumed he was out for a bit; I've missed a few episodes as of late so I didn't notice an extended absence.

does anyone know why Carlye stopped doing reviews?

I think he's just really busy since he does reviews/articles for other sites like AICN and Hollywood.com. But you can still listen to him on two of their podcasts at spill.com

does anyone know why Carlye stopped doing reviews?

I think I remember hearing that he was either getting married or just got married and was busy with that, plus he does reviews for other sites as ÆON said.

Back to topic though, love this site been using it for about a year now and I cant get enough of their reviews. I hardly ever agree with their reviews but I love the humour. I like watching these guys because its something I could see myself doing with my friends.

Yeah, he was saying that he's got some other things going on and he's had to reduce his time at spill significantly...
