SR Sequel: $200 million or else!?
Author: Jett
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 - 7:49 PM CENTRAL TIME: According to TMZ.COM, a sequel to SUPERMAN RETURNS will only come if the film reaches the $200 million mark domestically.

"Talent agency insiders with ties to the film tell TMZ that Warner Bros. Pictures president and COO Alan Horn has informed agents that a sequel hinges on whether grosses of 'Superman Return' can crest the $200 million mark domestically. What's more, the studio plans to shave millions - many millions - off any 'Superman' sequel's budget."

As of this writing, SR has raked in about $144.2 million domestically, which means it needs to take in around $56 million to make the people at Warner Bros. happy. We'll see as the film will probably stay in theaters into September or October.

Domestic: $164,316,103 68.1%
+ Foreign: $77,000,000 31.9%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

= Worldwide: $241,316,103

Budget listed at $260 million.

Looks like it will make it but a sequel isn't necessary a no-brainer.

This was posted in the BO thread a while back,it sounds fairly plausible IMO

I didn't realize you were a mod...oh wait you're not.

Shouldn't be surprising news. What'd you guys think? that a sequel would automatically get greenlit just b/c is superman? how naive.

I posted this in other threads. In case you missed it- make of it what you will, but there are conflicting reports about this $200 million rumour. The writer works in Hollywood (I think it's rumoured to be Stuart Beattie, a screenwriter ("Collateral")). Anyway, here it is:

So, “Superman Returns” was cool. (No gigantic mechanical spider in there though Jon? And Supes kept his suit too. You losing some power or you just accepted you were a little nuts at the time?) Ahem… but this **** about Warner holding out until it makes $200 million before greenlighting a sequel is just that - ****. pure bull****. They've already decided they're doing a sequel. I can assure you of that. "Superman Continues" or "Superman Strikes Back" - or whatever they end up calling it - will definitely be at cinemas within the next couple of years. (Brandon Routh's chasing a role in the "World of Warcraft" movie - -wonder if he'll do that first?)

In a way, WB has to greenlight the sequel, as not to look like they're upset and not make Singer look like a complete ass (although he already did that in that interview :O) about the box office numbers underperforming.

The 200 Million rumor was never 100 % confirmed by WB anyway. Even the original article that first posted it said it was never 100 % confirmed. Haters will send in anything anywhere & haters will believe any & everything they read if its an article on hating the Movie wether its fact or not & this 200 Million article is not 100 % prooven fact.

I'm pretty sure that a corporate director's duty of care to the corporation and the shareholders to act in good faith under the reasonable belief that their actions are in the best interests of the corporation and in such a manner that a reasonable person in like circumstances would similarly behave trumps "not looking like they're upset and making Singer not look like an ass."

If Singer keeps reacting to questions the way he did once he seems to be doing that himself & he will not need their help

LOL

For some reason this struck me as really funny. You have brought some sobriety to our understanding of the decision that is before the WB suits.

Hard realities will prevail when the decision on what to do about Superman is made.

The fact that it has not yet been anounced is interesting, but not surprising. It is no longer even a matter of whether it makes money alone. I think the real question before the suits is this, looking at POTC2, how much money has SR left in pockets of the movie going public and why.

Superman I believe when DVD, TV rights and other ancillaries are included will be profitable for TW, but the problem is not its profitabality anymore I think.

The real question that now has to be answered is whether Singer has hurt or helped the Franchise potential. People are now saying that no one should have expected Spidey numbers, Well my answer to that is; what are you smoking?

The superman symbol is second only to the cross of Christ in Brand Recognition (Does anyone remember a gag poster marvel ran years ago called "Jesus 11", lol).

So if I am WB I am thinking ok we are going to bank 300 million tops from ancillaries and BO, but if the internal forecast was 600 million was possible from BO and tie ins then they have questions to ponder.

Remember WB waited all these years to get it right. Do you think that they think that Singer got it right and that this is the best that Superman can do and that the sequel will go through the roof.

There was a photo on the boards yesterday that had Batman asking is that all the BO you made (truly amazing peice of work).

Supes did not have to deal with Clooney's recent batman fiasco so the answer from the suits may be well maybe we need to take a closer look at all this before the announcement, because changes may be required.

Singer has to be sleeping restlessly right now.

Excellent points. I think a lot of people don't realize the amount of money at stake, careers hanging in the balance, etc. These things are inherently complex from a financial and business standpoint and to hear comments like WB will finance a sequel just b/c they will look bad if they don't or that a sequel is deserved just b/c its superman, etc. just make me laugh.

I think WB did that to stir Fanboys up. They want people to go out there and draw up business for them. WB is pulling out anything they can to help this movie succeed.

Well I think the point Da was making is this, it is not just if it breaks even but what was involved in the discussions that went on in the board rooms and what is the thinking of the suits.

Is the BO what they expected or do they think SR is underperforming.

I think it is underperforming and I think they will want to know why if they also share that view.

If they, do changes may be suggested (demanded). Singer no longer will have a blank check if he returns, and at this point that cannot be guranteed.

Based on what?

-A 75 percent rating on rottentomatoes and general acceptance by critics across the board.

-General fan acceptance. Most here at SHH have rated it an 8, 9 or a 10.

-Solid box office. Made half it's (massive) budget (Some of which was attributed to SUPERMAN LIVES projects) back within a week and a half of release, has continued to make money, and will continue to make money domestically and overseas, and will clean up in DVD sales.

-Merchandising and licenses, including fast food deals, toys, apparel, video games, comics, novels, etc.

Is it the most successful movie ever? Hell no, but it HAS succeeded.
