Superman Returns SR Sequel: $200 million or else!?

Warner gets all the power in a deal like this. Not the unknown commodity. This is why they have the option to use him again if they want.

How do you know this for sure? Did you read his contract?

The sets were larger, more elaborate in design, and way more varied in terms of design. The FX were also more labored in their task. It's a lot easier to shoot spaceships in flight and stuff like that as opposed to rendering a complete 3D character in flight. My basic point was that depending on how the sequel is written, whether or not the budget will be higher. A lot of the flight shots in SR were completely CG. If the movie were done 10 or even five years ago, then it would've been more green-screen, which is cheaper. WB just let him do what he wanted FX-wise for this one.

I bet you think Batman Begins is going to cost less as well.

Batman Begins also did NOT use a ton of CG. It had a lot of live sets and tons of location shooting. And it still cost over $150 million.

Singer knows a return for the sequel means he probably won't clear as much out of the gate for a paycheck as he did for SR (due to the underwhelming box office). Singer has proven in the past that he can make a superhero movie hit and still be fiscally responsible and do it in a crunched time frame (X1 and X2). This time out WB basically gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to (this included using a new, untested camera for the first time and choosing an unknown in the lead role). They'll tighten the reins a bit on him for the next one, I think, but he'll still be able to make a solid film (in terms of production quality).

Assuming that Singer even directs the next one at all. If there is a next one :) .

Actually, I believe it was a contract for around $100,000 for SR with an option (that Warner has control over) for the next two (as far as I can remember, but I may be incorrect as to the exact figures). BB cost what it was worth for a complete reboot of a franchise. Hell, the only thing similar about BB and the other Batman outings was the basic functionality of the suit, so it was a complete production makeover and not a continuation (new Wayne Manor, Batcave, Batmobile, etc.). I know that BB mostly relied on live sets and physical action and the location shooting in Chicago wasn't cheap (no American location shooting ever is these days). BB also had a higher-profile cast (more expensive) than SR did. SR had big sets, location shooting, and CG to make him fly, hence it being estimated at around $50-$55 million higher in final cost. I'm just going on what's been said from Horn, Singer, and Legendary. You may be right, and it could be a smokescreen, and there won't be another Superman film for a long time. I hope that's not the case, though.

I know some theaters that are playing movies until they're released on dvd. So the end date would be November 27 (US release, dvd releases on Nov. 28). Though in rare instances, some still play movies after it's released on dvd.

i am starting to hear the building superman theme...

dun dunn dun

I doubt even WB hoped for that type of BO. I would assume alot of them were hoping for 250-300million domestic. I think some of the suits even used a number in this range in their interviews.

I agree.I did read somewhere(no way I can remember where though)that they were hopeing for around 250/300 mill, with a worldwide gross of 500 mill.

It might have been the Alan Horn article but maybe Robinov.

it was horn. studios dont look at i tlike that; they only look at worldwide gross. if it made 100 million in us total but 600 million overseas....sequel qould be coming out in 08.

Based on overseas BO returns? Wow I wouldn't guess that. Can you list some movies who have achieved a domestic box office 1/6 of the worldwide total and a sequel was greenlit. That sounds like a crapshoot.

If it makes it will SR go down in history as the slowest movie to cross 200M???
