Hmm... I was tired the other night and popped in SR after taking a looong break from it.

I watched the first hour, and really enjoyed it (more than normal).

The following night I then watched the rest.

Oddly enough the same thing, I enjoyed the second half more than ever before.

Still not a GREAT Superman film, but much better than I've felt about it. Definitely a pretty good film overall.

I wonder if Singer should have just shortened the film due to the type of story he was telling. I think when people get to the last 30 minutes they've kind of lost a bit of steam following.

There are indeed some great cinematic moments overlooked. I would now say the scene leading up to and including the DP globe save is up there with the plane rescue

So guys, try it out. Don't let yourself watch the entire film. Watch the first hour one night, and then the second half the next night. Let me know if it made you feel any different about certain scenes.

Glad you liked it. Interesting way to view it.

Of course I can watch the whole movie at once and love it more and more! What a terrific film!

I hope some people take a chance to view it this way. There are some aspects that I liked which simply could not be picked up in their entirety from a 3 hr viewing.

The Superman scenes are pretty good. Its Lex Luthor that destroys the whole movie for me with his stupid plot and goofy scenes.

I think I'm going to have to agree that the NK land plot just didn't quite cut it. The biggest mistake was characterization in itself where Lex should have been the corporate version which would have been a nice way to set the film further from Donner. It would have had a bit more balance imo.

I still have no problem watching and loving the movie as a whole. As you said Jc, on re-watch you find that were a lot more cinematic scene's than just the plane rescue.

The whole problem with it was, if it was mostly original, it would have been good. But Singer lifted just about everything from the original Superman plot with Chris Reeve.

Like most of you, I have waited close to 20 years for WB to get off their cans and ressurect a well know icon in Superman. He has world wide recognition & can be a cash cow for them if treated right. So, when it was announced he was coming back, I was excited. But after I sat thru a highly anticipated film, I left the theater feeling so empty. I have so many problems with this film but I'll only list 3 major ones for me.

1. In the original Superman (1978) Lex Luthor was planning to sink the west coast and sell off real estate he bought to sell and become a billionaire. In this version he wanted to use part of Superman's past to level a different coast for real estate. in over 20 years, this is the best you can come up with?

2. Superman simply 'returns' after being missing for quite awhile only to discover he has a son from Lois. The most responsible man in the world.........deadbeat dad? Of all the incredibly entertaining ideas you can come up with to make this re-launch fresh........thats it?

3. And the guts of the story was very bland. I had no 'feeling' I was even watching a Superman movie, its almost like they killed a part of me that was rooting for him to save the day. Yes, I know he did that in the airplane scene, but he also DID that in the original Superman & a helicopter scene too. See what I'm getting at? There was nothing NEW ala Batman Begins to it. We saw this 30 years ago!

The best thing to do is totally re-launch the character, but since the movie isn't old at all, its not going to happen. Singer really had no imagination or at least the writers didn't. Superman Returns got up at the plate, took a swing......but struck out.

AGREED, guys!

Superman Returns is one of my favorite films ever. I think it's utterly beautiful, epic and mythic. But what I like the most about it is that it's full of heart and that it really feels like a Superman film. Like this reviewer said, it's a film for feeling, thinking people.

I also like how this person put it,

"I loved Superman Returns because Bryan Singer did not try to sell out Superman by throwing in some mindless action. Superman Returns was very true to the idea that Superman is not an Anti-Hero. Sure Superman did give into some very human behavior, but in the end he realized that he will always be Superman no matter what happens between him and Lois. He also now knows that he is not alone in this World and he has more to fight for. I think Singer set up a very good dramatic Story, for example one day Jason will have to know the truth even if it hurts. The only complaint that I keep hearing is that Superman should have punched something, and if that is all the Studio wants to see then that is sad, because they have completely missed the point. Supermans true power does not come from his fist. I think Singer Understood this. Brandon Routh also showed me a Superman that was very much a savior, he was powerful yet angelic, and that is the Superman I want to see, not a Dark Superman just for the sake of being dark."

Me too.

Too bad that what makes or breaks a movie is its ability to entertain. Singer's out just because of this fact.

I recently went back and rewatched Returns after not seeing it for nearly 7 months, and i still find it to be an uplifiting, feelgood, and entertaining movie. When the movie premiered in theatres 3 years ago, I gave it a solid 8/10 score in my initial review, and I still stand by that assessment.

I wonder, how would this movie have been received if it had been released during the Chris Reeve Era and instead of Routh and Bosworth we would have gotten Reeve and Kidder. I think this movie would have been regarded alongside of Superman 1 and 2....
