Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

The next installment needs the Borg. The are already a faceless hive of drones and they don't need motivation or depth - maybe a few scenes with the hive queen, but she wouldn't need a butt-load of characterization. That way you can fully focus on the interpersonal relationships and the Federation , and not waste time on developing a villain only to leave it under-cooked. That has been the biggest problem from me in these new ST movies - all 3 villains were the weakest part of the movie. And given that this is AU cannon, why couldn't Kirk and co. meet the Borg now. IMO, they are still the best villain the ST universe ever had.

Into Darkness is slickly produced nut it honestly o e of the worst examples of big budget story telling up to that point. It took every negative movie trend, banking on nostalgia for borrowed impact, poor character development etc and cranked them all to the max. I was very excited for that movie and was blown away by just how bad of a movie it ended up being writing wise. By the time Spock was doing a KHAAAN scream I laughed but was honestly sad. It was such a sinking feeling. Orci and Kurtzman are a toxic influence.

Abrams is just as culpable if not more so. That movie really showcases Abrams's worst storytelling sensibilities.

What do you guys want to see in the film series?

For me, I would like to show something unexpectedly different, and have Kirk and co. fight the Borg.

But more importantly: I really want a full scale Federation/Klingon war.

I honestly want to continue to see a new race of villains. I don't want to see the Borg just yet in the new series.

The Borg are unique to The Next Generation crew & Voyager.

I'd like to see the breakout war between The Klingons vs. The Federation that Admiral Marcus referenced in Into Darkness

Basically a bunch of birds of prey and uss ships zerg rushing each other in deep space.

They need to ditch this version now that the time line is established. This is starting to remind me of Marvel's lesser Ultimate Universe stuff. Just kind of there with nothing to say.

The Ent-A also has red lines along its side similar to the original.

I loved BEYOND! It was like an extended version of a TOS episode in the best possible way. Pegg and Jung did an excellent job with the script—I hope they're involved in the writing process for ST4.

Pegg and Jung were passed over as writers for ST4. SEE my post up the page on page 5 with link confirming it.

It should have been the logical progression especially since from the Klingon point of view a bunch go humans attacked their home planet.

So because YOU seemingly don't like it, they need to "ditch this version". Ignoring the fact that pretty much everyone else outside of the Trekkie community seems to really enjoy it.

Got it.

Heck not even most Trekkie's dislike it. It's a bit more controversial amongst hardcore fans (but then again any change to the status quo is inevitably going to be that way in ANY hardcore fanbase, not just ST). But there are plenty of Trekkies who like the new stuff, or at least find stuff to enjoy in it.

And it's not like the old continuity was fairing any better by the end (Nemesis bombed, Enterprise got cancelled early, and no one wanted to touch ST until JJ and co came along).

I wanna see them attempt a movie without a villain in it at all. That'd be more interesting.

NotSoLongAgo I doubt that they'd do that. It's a nice idea in theory and it makes for some really good TV. But TV and films are a different mediums. Also they invest so much time and money in these, and want to reach as wide an audience as possible, that I just don't see them taking the chance on that anytime soon (in the films that is).

To use another example, even something like Captain America: Civil War (which could have gotten away with having no flat-out villain potentially because the ideological and political divide could have fueled the conflict on it's own) still felt the need to throw in a villain (Zemo) manipulating things behind the scenes/from the shadows.

Looks like it will be a 58-60M weekend depending on the multiplier. I don't think that's bad, putting it right about where Ant-man was last year, and hopefully it can have similar legs.

I'm a little concerned about the cinemascore, not bad, but an A- is the lowest of this film series and lower than Ant-man's A, but it's not a terrible score, probably average for a summer movie.

People have to put the box office in perspective. All of these reboot films made far more than any of the previous incarnations. I think there is a ceiling for this franchise as Star Trek has always been kind of "nerdy" and had trouble crossing demographic boundries for movie goers, which is ironic when the theme's of Star Trek have always been universal and crossing ethnic boundaries.

Hopefully this has even bigger international numbers than Into Darkness did, but a sequel is already on the board, and they are pushing forward.

Also you have to put things a bit in perspective as outside of Civil War, and animated films like Finding Dory and Secret Life of Pets, this summer has been abysmal for finding films that audiences lock onto. I hope good word of mouth will keep this thing running.

Just came back from the cinema. What an awesome ride!

I am not a fan of TOS (haven't seen them all), but I really liked the homage with the picture.

The new rebooted universe though.. 3 awesome films so far and I can't wait for the next one :)

I thought this was a blast.
Best blockbuster I've seen so far this year.

Action was great. Acting was good (although that was never a concern). Humor was done so perfectly, other movies need to take notes from this on how to make a movie fun/funny but not let it take away from the stakes or mood. Storyline was good, I liked how they delved more into Kirk's psyche, although next film I want more into Bones' psyche. I feel that, while he's great, that we havent gotten much from him other than being the wise cracking cynic.

And the use of "Sabotage"... all the b****ing and moaning everyone did about it and it worked great in the movie. Maybe not for everyone, I havent read critic or viewer reviews yet, but I loved it. My theater loved it and clapped. Probably my favorite scene in the movie.

The cons:
-While the villains motivation was cool, [BLACKOUT]i'm kinda bumbed they went with another "human" villain in the end
-Jayla, while cool wasn't given a lot to do. I mean they did have some good "I don't understand your customs" type moments but otherwise she was just eh. Her big action scene was filmed poorly. I havent read the reviews yet, but I'm sure people are loving her but yeah I didn't think she did much. Good performance though, hope she returns
-Spock/Uhura's relationship. Did they have to break up again. Yes, the reasoning why was sound but they broke up last movie.
-The movie dragged (drug?) some of the time.

But all in all this was really good. Not as good to me as ST09, but still good. The best blockbuster this year so far imo and my favorite too.

I definitely enjoyed this far more than STID. Krall was a good villain, and whoever said it felt more like a big-budget episode of the original series was spot on. Pine felt more like Kirk in this than ever before, imo. And I just have to say, while I know it's similar to several "futuristic" cinematic locales of the last few years, I really liked the design of Yorktown. Looked like an awesome place to live/work.

I'm really happy for Justin Lin. The guy seems born to play in the blockbuster franchise arena. Hope he's enjoying it.

I'm happy for Justin and loved the movie. For some reason, the Cinemark XD theater was really hot....maybe they were trying for a 4D experience for some of the scenes LOL. If I had to rank them, I'd put 1 and 3 first with 2 being a bit of a fall off (but still liked it). I think you're right about Pine. He's starting to get more comfortable with the character. It happens.

I don't understand the guy/gal who said it was a bad movie. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion (isn't that nice of me to allow that??? :woot: ) and I'm a terrible critic, but still.......

Anyway, it was fun, fun, fun and the crew is really starting to feel like the ST crew. Makes me sick about Anton. It's no more sad than any other death I suppose, but he was so young and had so much to look forward to in his life.:csad::csad::csad: I was definitely tearing up during the credits. I wonder what they'll do during the next movie. Pull a Dumbledore or have his brother join the crew???

They wouldnt recast. Probably just make a new character in his place. Maybe use Jayla?

I almost can't believe that people who worked on this movie clearly liked and respected Star Trek : Enterprise as much as me that they had a ****load of references to it. It bogs the mind.

The movie isn't perfect by any means, but it gells better then the previous ones and besides the weak villain and his motivations, I flows really well. First Contact is still my all time favorite No. 1, and I doubt any ST movie will knock it out any time soon.

If they want another crew member, Jayla is perfect. We know her, most people like her and another woman wouldn't hurt in this sausage fest.

I still vote for Borg as the ultimate antagonist - they don't need backstory or character development. "We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." Boom.

But more importantly: I really want a full scale Federation/Klingon war.

A complete alien villain and/or a villain without a revenge motivation

IDK, maybe a conflict over territory/planet. The federation unwittingly claiming/colonizing a world that already belongs to someone else.

Maybe going topical, and doing a terrorist plot line. A new planet is set to join but some local political factions on this new world are opposed to it and sabotage negotiations, blow up federation ships, ....

Federation/Klingon war could work.

But BORG most of all. And no, I will not give up. There is never too much Borg. :p

I need to ad up on the Borg. I'm not a Star Trek guy so I barely know who they are. Think I read the wiki page back when STID when everyone was saying how they shouldve used the borg
