JOSH TRANK TO DIRECT STAND-ALONE STAR WARS FILM

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

"We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

Interesting. I wonder what it is. So that's Trank and Evan, I wonder who's next?

I wonder with these stand alone movies if they'll keep the original theme and opening crawl.

I hope this isn't another "young adult" type movie. He's already covered that in Chronicle (even with similar powers) and will do in Fantastic Four so it'd be nice to see him cover some new ground.

really curious as to who he knows in hollywood

dude makes one passable movie and is given F4 (which sounds completely awful) & now Star Wars

really? really?

He made one critically acclaimed and financially successful movie actually. The fact that YOU personally merely found it "passable" doesn't change that fact in the slightest. And what about FF sounds so awful, the really talented cast or the story that we know nothing about. Yeah, that sounds so terrible, please.

I like this choice. I think Chronicle shows that Josh Trank is a filmmaker who can have a clear and consistent vision of a film and execute it in a way that is engaging, entertaining and visually stunning. I look forward to both FF and a stand alone Star Wars film by him. Bravo!!!

This is step 1 on getting the FF rights back.

step 2 is to make him choose between Star Wars and FFINO.

step 3, he'll pull a wright / goddard on Fox.

step 4, FF goes back to MCU!

One can only hope despite filming already commenced

This is a really good choice Josh is an excellent director though he hasn't done a lot you can tell that he has great talent. Disney is not just going to pick anyone willy-nilly they know that they have to pick very credible good directors. Every director wants to have a Star Wars gig but Disney is wanting to make sure they're getting the people right for the position. And I like other going for these younger newer directors they can give a different perspective perhaps.

An odd choice. Trank hasn’t really shown his directorial chops yet. Chronicle was good, but as a found footage film it’s hard to tell how skilled he truly is. And FF, his first major blockbuster, has been one mess after another...

Eh, I'm worried about this choice. Guess we will see.

I'm right with you there. Trank has shown some potential with Chronicle but that alone is hardly something to bet the house on. FF has had a very rocky road and we haven't heard squat about the production since the cast announcement. If it does turn out well tho I may be signing a different tune.

My main concern is with Gareth Edwards directing the first spin-off. I personally thought Godzilla was horrible and if that is any indication of what his SW film will be like than I am not looking forward to it.

I guess we will have to wait for more details surrounding the plot of these films before making any real judgements but for now I'm not overly impressed. (for the record, Trank is a much better choice than Edwards).

I wonder which one he'll be doing?

Edwards another guy needing to be kept on a leash. This is probably how a Star Wars movie by Edwards will turn out

A fight starts happening & then it cuts away to something else ? Boba could fire a rocket launcher. We see the rocket go off. But not the explosion. Since it will cut away from the good stuff. A jedi could be getting ready to face Boba. The lightsaber lights up. As the jedi runs at Boba. The scene cuts to something else

Disney does not just hand out jobs to anyone. With LFL they are being careful who they pick. Josh/Gareth both have great talent. Young and fresh. Trust me Disney knows more about what Josh is doing then we do. Either from hearing about the new FF etc they felt he was a great pick out of many others. I remember hearing these exact “worries” about a no-name small film maker known as Christopher Nolan. Back in 03, there were meltdowns on the Hype. Thinking that he’s done too small of films, and could not handle Batman.

Disney is not just taking this lightly, I guarantee you they went through a strong vetting process to make sure they found the appropriate talent. And Josh may not have a lot under his belt, but either does Collin for Jurassic World. I think it’s great that studios are doing what they did with Spielberg/Lucas and all that crew back in the day. Letting a new generation come with talent and create films. There are so many directors lining up offering to direct a SW film, LFL has the pick of the litter. They picked these two because of their talent, and they must have seen something that will fit the projects they want them to do.

Since I have been following Comic Book movie news & all of the recent rumors & stuff going on between fox & Disney Comic Book Properties wise. I will always question why Disney hired Josh Trank. It just can not be a coincidence

Interesting choice of directors that Disney is picking. I think it's also great that Disney is hiring filmmakers right now as to give them enough time to map out the ideas that they want to explore.

So now this is going to suck according to Trank haters... :whatever:

The guy is talented and maybe Disney knows something about his FF movie that gives them confidence... think about it, if that movie fails terribly, then many will question Disney's decision and create a lot of negativity. Anyway, is up to Trank to deliver, these movies will be the turning point in his career.

Yeah, who was the Spielberg guy who got picked to direct Jaws?

Who was the Cameron guy who directed Terminator?

Who was that Nolan guy who they picked to direct Batman?

See how ridiculous these criticisms sound yet?
