I've always been keen to read Star Wars comics as the two seem perfect for each other, and yet I feel Star Wars is very often mishandled in the comicbook medium.
Here are the ones I feel work;
Dark Empire; George Lucas said this was the closest thing to his plans for a sequel trilogy, and gave it to Lucasfilm employees at Christmas. Dark Empire is the only Star Wars spin-off in comics, books or anywhere to recognise the mythic qualities of the story and attempt to further them, whilst also capturing the constant cliffhanger thrills and pacing.
- Manga versions of the movies; just fantastic. I hate comic adaptions of films as they are always lazy, photo-realistic cash-ins, but these comics are a brand new slant on the stories, and tell them in a much more intense and emotional way.
- Knights of the Old Republic; builds it's own storyline nicely without trying too hard to capture the feel of the movies.
A lot of the others are pretty lame. I have, for some reason, read all the Clone Wars comics about Quinlan Vos, and Anakin & Obi-Wan, and they seem very poor attempts to tell very half-assed stories that go nowhere. The whole thing seems desperate to try and recreate the look and feel of the prequels, but beyond that has no substance.
I am starting to think that Marvel's Star Wars comics are actually truer to the Flash Gordon spirit of them, if not the details.
