At this point, I would say Avengers 2. Star Wars is deeply entrenched in our cultural fabric, but a new Star Wars movie has a fair bit going against it. Avengers, by contrast, has hit a strong chord with the general zeitgeist, and is going to be actively promoted the entire time from now to then via the related movies and TV shows.

The scary thing is that either way, Disney wins.

I would say Avengers 2, as well. The Star Wars film has a few things going against it:

    1. The Prequel Trilogy. It is going to take a lot to wash the terrible taste of the trilogy away.
    2. Age. If they go forward with the alleged casting, then the film is going to have the casting go against it as well: time has not been kind to Fisher and Hamill; Abrams would be wise to not have them involved in any fight scenes. Ford, on the other hand, can pull it off, as he running the fine line that Hamill and Fisher fell off of.
    3. Destruction of the Expanded Universe. Sure, some people are happy it is gone, but to those who actively purchased EU products - books, films, comics, and video games-the fact that the texts they enjoyed are no longer in continuity is inflammatory. Hell, I am almost tempted to sell/throw out most of my SW books and associated merchandise because of this decision.

Of course, the film will inevitably gross hundreds of millions, with the automatons who supported the prequel trilogy filling the seats once more. Chances are Abrams is going to get a home run, if not bunt the ball. It is just that the film has a lot going against it before pre-production is completed.

Agreed on all counts. Plus, as the guy mentioned in the You Tube video, Avengers 2 will get promoted like crazy over the next 2 years. Not only through things like posters, TV spots, and movie trailers, as all films do, but also all of the related superhero movies that are coming up. We've just seen Iron Man 3 with their (somewhat disappointing) teaser trailer at the end. In November we'll get Thor 2 and their post movies Avengers 2 teaser. Next year, in 2014, I'm guessing that there will be a Captain America 2. Perhaps a Hulk 2. I understand that they're planning an Ant Man movie which could be out by summer 2014 and be a tie in with Avengers 2. They might even make a Hawkeye/Black Widow movie for summer 2014. Each one with a story element which might lend itself to the Avengers 2 plot, and a post credits teaser tying that movie to Avengers 2. Just like we got with each of the Marvel films that lead up to the first Avengers film.

Star Wars has nothing to promote itself with but its legacy, a legacy severely marred by the extreme crappiness of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Many of the younger film goers, when they think Star Wars, they don't think A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of The Jedi. They think The Franchise Menace, Attack of The Clowns, and Revenge of The S#!t. And as a result, they may very well avoid the new Star Wars Trilogy like the plague. Even if Abrams is able to return the series to its former greatness, it likely won't be until after all of the rave reviews are in that people will go see Star Wars 7. If they open on the same weekend, Avengers 2 will win out.

Um, we know exactly what movies are coming out. Next year is Cap 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. There is no Hulk 2 scheduled.

In terms of BO or quality? I personally think they will be pretty comparable in terms of both. I see both grossing just over $2b at the BO and being great follow up films in their franchises. SW will probably get the slight edge in terms of hype and being a big deal since it's the first true SW sequel and will likely be full of nostalgia, but that's only a slight edge since the sequel to the Avengers is going to be big effing deal as well.

I think if Star Wars 7 is a GREAT film - I'm talking 90% of critical acclaim, it'll draw in all crowds and win it out. Otherwise, I agree with the guy in the video. Avengers 2>SW7, but A3<SW8.

They'll both probably do very well commercially. The SW prequels, as s#!tty as they are, were successful in pure calculation of cost vs profit. If JJ Abrams can make SW 7 as good as the OT, then over the course of the summer I think SW might make more.

But thanks to the utter crapfest that was the SW prequels, I think Avengers 2 will have the stronger opening weekend.

I actually think the the pure crappiness of the prequels will help SWVII in a weird way. People are desperate for a good Star Wars movie after, literally, 30 years since the last one came out. Interest level and hype will be extremely high if this is deemed a critical success.

Avatar 2 is also coming out in 2015. It will be more of a 3-way battle.

Between Star Wars and Avengers 2, I'm not too sure about the quality of the films but from a box office point of view, I have a feeling Star Wars will win in that category. There is literally nothing bigger than Star Wars in pop culture.

Avatar 2 wins, followed by Avengers 2 and then Star Wars.

(But, it will be close between Avatar 2 and Avengers 2.)

I hope that WB don't rush to have a JL movie in 2015.

True, however I think the crappiness of the prequels will make SW fans more cautious about future SW films. Of course, the sheer awesomeness of Star Tek & Star Trek 2 will likely give the fans more faith in JJ's vision for a SW movie. But I still think people will wait to see how the movie is reviewed first, rather than campling outside their local movie theatre for weeks waiting to get their tickets first & get the best seats. Although there probably will be those people too, but I don't think it will be quite like before.

Thus I maintain, Avengers 2 will win out for opening weekend. But Star Wars VII will win out over Summer 2015 as a whole.

In terms of box-office, I think The Avengers 2 will get more money overseas and domestic. We still don't know which month Star Wars will come out. If it comes out in summer, I don't think it will beat The Avengers 2 and if it comes out in November/December, it could beat Avatar 2 but I'm not really sure.
