STARSHIP TROOPERS CALLED BACK FOR DUTY
by Alex Riviello

Variety has news of a few new direct to dvd sequels on the way...
Yes, Starship Troopers 3 is currently being produced. The first I think is one of Paul Verhoven's best works, (besides Robocop, of course) and the second was a lot better than it had any right to be. This time the scriptwriter of the first two (Ed Neumeier) is doing it once again, as well as stepping behind the camera to direct. No word on what the story is about just yet.

In other DTV news, Species 4 is gearing up, with another nympho lined up in the form of swedish hottie Helena Mattsson. Expect lots of gratiuitous sex scenes and weird, Giger-inspired creature designs. The film is set to start filming next month.

No more word on either of these, but we'll bring you the word when we hear it.

the all mighty $

Yeah, but the film can only make money from foolish members of the general public who SOMEHOW see a DVD called, 'Species 4' and think, "That looks like a movie of quality."

Somehow.

I can understand the love for the first SST, but the second?

I too thought that SST2 turned out better than I expected. They did a good job with the FX for the bugs, on a noticeably reduced budget. The characters were engaging enough, and the movie had a darker more grittier feel than the more tongue-in-cheeky first film. I do think the first film is better though, however I don't consider it a masterpiece either.

I also think there's enough story left to do several SST movies, perhaps highlighting a different front or aspect of the war. As for Species 4, I think they bungled parts 2 & 3, and there's really nowhere else to go after the ending of 3 (spoilers) esp. since the aliens can't procreate. Unless they find a way to get around that. But who really cares?

Starship Troopers 3 is STV ? That sucks since it looks like Casper Van Dien will return for that

SST2 is ok when not being directly compared to the original. It is an entirely different feeling. Instead of viewing a war, you focus on one unit in a chlostrophobic situation. It is just a different movie. That being said, it would've been ten times better if Clancy Brown could've played Zim like originally intended instead of that wanna-be Zim they used in the movie (Dax, I think)

This direct to video phenom is like the show biz equivalent to the special needs room in your school. I think it was Soderbergh I heard say that there are no good B-movies you see anymore.

The Marine
Transporter
Transporter 2
Man-Thing

All alright or good B-movies.

Noticeably reduced? SST2 had a total budget of three million and most of it was filmed in a wharehouse in Berkely. It was also a test project for Tippet Studios. We went places with HD video that have literally remained the benchmark for workflow production. It was the first project that we were involved in at Spectsoft and it has a special place in my heart.

Hey Jake, will Tippet Studios be doing the effects for SST3?

I couldn't tell you, until it's released in trades I won't even know. Our contact at Tippet was Dan MacNamara who was the Head of Operations. He has since moved on to help found the Orphanage. He's a great guy, and really supports us at trade shows and what not.

There's already a thread on the SST3 part but the species 4 is news to me.

Good God.

This sucks. Can we say "Dollar Movie Bin" at Wal-Mart?

I saw a Butterfly Effect 2 in the DVD rack the other day....And now Behind Enemy lines 2....this is getting worse. I mean...I also saw Save the last Dance 2 on the shelfs. What's going on.
