Seriously it is.

People seem to think it's just a dumb, stupid sci fi action flick.

How do people ever miss the satire? I never understood it :csad:

It's a sweet movie

to be honest it was probably marketed terribley as a summer blockbuster or something, which it has sweet special effects, but the parrallels to WW2 are uncanny, and hilarious at times

When I first saw it, I was about 12 or 13. I thought it was a pretty awesome action film. But as I got older and further in school, I saw the satire and understood what it was about more.
I think you correct, it is misunderstood, but most films like Starship Troopers are misunderstood by the general audience.

Like Slither, or Return of the Living Dead

Yeah it's sad.

The movie was ahead of it's time. It's a perfect analogy for the war on terror.

The destruction of Buenos Aires = 9-11

The brain bug = Bin Laden

the propaganda against the bugs = anti-insurgent propaganda

"Would you like to know more?"

it's nothing genius or anything, but it's grown on me over the time.

ST's satire was definitely not understood.
Underrated. I really like the film.

I enjoy it myself when I watch it.

My brother pointed out that it was technically a "What if the Nazis had won WWII" scenario (and so the uniforms and the propaganda).

And since it was released... well, they don't say life imitates art for no reason now do they?

Just because something is a satire, doesn't mean it was good or had any sort of redeeming entertainment value.

It was def marketed as a action movie. I remember seeing the trailer with Men in Black.

Trying to say something there, sparky?

It took me awhile to appreciate it as satire but I eventually did. But it's still not that great of a movie.

It's not bad, but I don't think it's awesome either. The best thing about it is the F/X, Dina Meyer's boobs, Denise Richards and it's jokey attitude. It's certainly not a serious sci-fi movie, just a goofy one.

I think a lot of people realize what it is, and they appreciate it for that. And other people don't realize it but still like it. It's pretty good fun any way you look at it.

But it probably didn't do well b/c of the lack of women seeing it....I've never met a woman who likes or would like it :o

I think people understood it was a satire, just not a good one. It's amazing how something that's supposed to be smart and thought provoking ends up as mindless entertainment.

I for one like it, but only in small doses every couple of years.

I remember MST3K riffing the scene when the dropships landed, and thousands of troopers are running to attack the giant um...big ass aliens who shot that blue laser whatever out from their asses.

I totally agree that this movie in underrated. The original advertisements were so far away from the actual concept. Setting the action to Blur's "Song 2" was an error in judgment. That said, selling satires on fascism ain't exactly gonna bring in the buyers. I just remember my friend telling me not to see it because it was a terrible action movie... Ah, that poor misguided fool...

I'll tell you what's not underrated....Starship Troopers 2. That s*)$ sucks! I couldn't even watch it while fast-forwarding through it!

It makes me wonder, if they made it today what would it be trying to say?

Who the hell over about 12/13 wouldn't pick up that Verhoeven's take on Troopers was satire? Of course it's making fun of the whole thing.

To be fair, Heinlein's work was played totally straight. So, while it's no huge surprise a guy like Verhoeven would absolutely hate the book and want to turn it all on its head, the book's a lauded work on its own right. If they ever reboot it, it'd probably be played way more straight in another film adaptation, depending on who was directing of course.

It's definitely nowhere near as smart a movie as Robocop though, it's pretty damn heavy-handed even by Paul's standards (the Nazi uniforms? C'mon man :oldrazz: ).

Hell of a fun movie though, and it's like that perfect special-effects sweet-spot in the 90s where CG existed, but they were still using models too. Looks way better than most space-marine/alien menace type of scifi movies these days.

Now that's one heck of a thread bump.

Anyway, yeah-- Awesome, insanely quotable movie. Great score, too. Second only to RoboCop in Verhoeven's filmography. Definitely overdue for a rewatch on both.

As a director's work in general, Paul Verhoeven is mis-understood and unappreciated.
