Why Undead Labs abandoned the State of Decay MMO

September 26, 2016 14 Comments

For a good while, the MMO community was following Undead Labs in the hopes of seeing its Class4 project come to fruition in the form of a zombie MMORPG.

However, this past summer, we learned that Undead Labs decided to make State of Decay 2 as a four-player co-op experience instead, officially dashing these hopes.

Recently on Twitch, Undead Labs President Jeff Strain explained why the studio abandoned its plans for massively multiplayer game, saying its fans were “relieved” that the team went a different route for the sequel:
This is not Class4, this is State of Decay 2 There’s a big difference. You know, Class4 was something that we wanted to do probably in Summer 2009. The initial plan was to build a smaller game with Class3, that game became State of Decay, and then from there take it into a large scale online world experience with Class4.

State Of Decay 2 Has Three Maps At Launch, More Could Come Later

The multiple map set up makes it easy to expand the world down the line..."Read more

You should expect to see slightly different environments, definitely different landmarks and locations." Last updated by eddienoteddy's Profile - GameSpot"]eddienoteddy's Profile - GameSpot"]eddienoteddy's Profile - GameSpot"]eddienoteddy's Profile - GameSpot"]Eddie Makuch on April 5, 2017 at 10:36PM

State of Decay 2"]State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs has confirmed how many maps the zombie sequel will have at launch. Age Gate - State of Decay 2"]In a blog post, the studio said there will be three maps out of the gate. Each of the areas is "roughly the size of the original," Undead Labs said.

The maps will be very varied. "You should expect to see slightly different environments, definitely different landmarks and locations, different layouts lending themselves to different strategies, unique home sites, and even different mission types," Undead said. The studio went on to explain why State of Decay 2 has three maps instead of one. The idea is that the studio wants players not to experience a sense of "deja vu," and this also gives Undead the freedom to potentially expand the game world even further with more locales in the future."Why'd we do it that way?" Undead said about State of Decay 2 having three maps. "Well, primarily, because it makes the game more fun. It really feels like you're moving from one small town to another, and creates a tremendous sense of immersion. And perhaps counter-intuitively, it makes the world feel even bigger.
"You know how on one map (even one three times the size as the original game's) the longer you play, the more you start feeling deju vu with every mission?" it added. "That's less of an issue with separate maps. And see above about strategies and missions. Oh, and one more detail--the multiple map set up makes it easy to expand the world down the line, if you know what I mean."
Also in the blog post, Undead explained that its idea is to allow players to take all of the survivors and all every item collected in one area to the others. Additionally, players should get some kind of refund for the buildings they create on one area when they move to the next. All of this is subject to change, as State of Decay 2 remains in development.
"We'll have all the vehicles parked in our home site parking spaces, along with whatever's stored in the trunks," the statement says. "We're also going to get at least a partial refund on what we sunk into building our facilities. That's the intention, anyway. As always, specifics may change a bit as we get deeper into testing..."
That State of Decay 2 will have a larger game world than the first game is no surprise. Last year, Undead boss Jeff Strain confirmed that the sequel's game world will be State of Decay 2's World Is "Substantially Larger," Lets Co-Op Players Split Up"]"substantially larger" than that of the first game.

State of Decay was an original title from indie developer Undead Labs in 2013 that set players in a town in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Scavenging for materials, teaming up with NPCs and thinning out herds was the name of the game. While the title looked dated for 2013, it was a solid title considering the small studio behind it. Now, Undead Labs is bringing us back to the apocalypse with State of Decay 2.
We see a trailer of a woman, frankly, kicking zombie ass. The trailer shows that if a character gets infected, there is a hard-to-find cure that can be used, but be sure to use it when you need it. There's also mention of heat, leading us to believe there may be more supplies to be collected.

The game's fidelity alone looks much better than the original. It's planned for release in Spring 2018.

I hate they pushed this back until next year.
For the past year, I was anticipating playing it this fall!
I guess I'll just give the original State of Decay one more play-through.

This looks cool! Never played the first one. I'm going to have to check this out. May 22, same day as the Jurassic Park 25th anniversary blu-ray set I'm going to get. Ugh. I'm going to be broke, but well entertained that weekend.

Looking at that video, it reminds me of The Division, but with zombies. Nice, I love that game.

Defend a fortified position against waves of zombies.

SoD2_08-21-18.jpg

The State of Decay 2 add-on “Daybreak Pack” will launch on September 12 for $9.99, Microsoft and Undead Labs announced.

Here are the latest details:

The Daybreak Pack is a brand-new game mode for State of Decay 2 —a re-playable co-op “zombie siege” experience:

    • Team up with friends. Players and up to three teammates play as highly skilled Red Talon soldiers armed with high-end weaponry; together, they will defend a fortified position against waves of oncoming zombies, while a vulnerable technician repairs a critical satellite relay.
    • New enemies and weapons. Among the waves of regular and special zombies players will need to ward off will be a new enemy – the Blood Plague Juggernaut! This is a tougher version of the already powerful juggernaut who will expose players to blood plague. To combat this new scourge, players have access to a new set of CLEO weapons including eight new ranged weapons, six new melee weapons and six new deployable explosives.
    • New rewards and achievements. The more waves you survive, the more rewards you earn. Rewards and unlocked items can be used to fight more efficiently in future Daybreak sessions and players will also be able to access those same unlocked items for their main community of survivors, giving access to the new CLEO weapons, additional accessories and upgrades for their base – including the opportunity to bring in a Red Talon soldier. Lastly Daybreak Pack comes with over two dozen new achievements for State of Decay 2 worth 250 Gamerscore!
Daybreak Pack will be available for fans who own the Standard Edition for $9.99 (USD), and is included with the Ultimate Edition at no additional cost. It will also be available at launch for Xbox Game Pass members with a 10% discount. As an Xbox Play Anywhere game, one digital purchase gets you both the Xbox One and the Windows 10 version of the game. In addition to the release of Daybreak Pack, there will be a content update to continue improving player experience. Keep an eye on www.stateofdecay.com for a full list of patch notes when the update goes live!
