State your unpopular film related opinion - Part 10

Agreed. The amount of work he puts into his movies is awesome too. Looking at the credits of some of his movies that show his stuntwork, the guy has balls.
Agreed.
Plus somebody who loves Buster Keaton that much can't be that bad:woot:

This has to be an unpopular opinion. I think that Red Dragon is the best movie in the Hannibal series. There I said it.

^ I don't agree but good unpopular opinion:up:
Mine on the subject is that, even though both films are flawed, Red Dragon is better and more enjoyable to watch than Manhunter is (and also better than Hannibal. Rattner better than Michael Mann and Ridley Scott lol.)
I liked Brian Cox but it was cool to see Hopkins portray the character again and kinda complete the series.
One of the few things that Manhunter did better than RD though was Dollarhyde imo. I thought Noonan was much scarier and felt more real than Fiennes did. I thought he was miscast, I wanted Nic Cage as Dollarhyde:woot:

I don't get all the hate for Once upon A Time In Mexico.

Best cast, best story, best characters. Not to mention, the fact that an older, more seasoned Rodriguez directs it with much more confidence than the previous two.

Also, Depp's Agent Sands is easily one of the coolest characters in mainstream 00's cinema.

Eh, I don't hate it, but I enjoyed both El Mariachi and Desperado more.

They're great action movies. No doubt. I just think the third has a little bit more to it.

Desperado was my favorite. I could appreciate El Mariachi, but didn't love it like the remake/sequel. I did enjoy Once Upon a Time in Mexico more than most other people, but not near as much as Desperado.

Yeah Agent Sands was awesome. Rodriguez had way more going for that character then anyone else in the flick. Was really surprised he didnt follow another film up with him.

I actually liked Total Recall (2012).

Never saw that movie, thought Desperado is the first and Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a lone sequel

Yep. It was really good too. Very different, though. The mariachi is less:

So apparently he hit the gym in between movies.

Scorcese's been coasting since Casino.

The Man Of Steel Comic-Con trailer is more enjoyable to me than the last three Superman movies combined. Even if this movie stinks, it'll always have that I suppose...

Hmm. I'd go as far as to say that since Bringing Out the Dead, he's been on a roll. Gangs of New York, Departed, Shutter Island and Hugo are all at the very least really good. And The Aviator was fantastic. It's honestly in my top three of Scorsese, along with The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver.

Yeah, The Departed is one of my favorite movies ever.

I also love The Departed. I feel like everyone involved brought their A-game.

I think, the thing you could argue with Scorcese is that he's made some movies that are just so definitive and legendary, they really can't be topped. He's never going to make another Taxi Driver. Or Raging Bull. No one is.

But I'd hardly say The Departed or Shutter Island marks a decline. In a lot of ways, they're even more expertly directed films than Scorcese's earlier films which relied a bit more heavily on story and acting for their legendary quality.

I don't think Scorcese has made a great film since Goodellas. His recent work just dosen't have the vitality of his films like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. Those were transcendent. He's still an excellent filmmaker, but I do think his best days are behind him. I no longer care when the next Scorcese film is coming out. Age is an obvious factor in this. Same goes for Michael Mann, Terrence Malick, Steven Spielberg, etc.

There are some actors I feel the same way about. De Niro being the main one. He's been off my radar for 15 years.

Scorsese's last great film is his last collaboration with DeNiro, "Casino."
The one they did before, "Cape Fear" is also great and underrated.
Also I don't know if it's unpopular but I really dislike "After Hours."

I agree that his last great film is Casino.
In regards to everything since, well, I know it's really unpopular but I don't think they're that great.
The Departed, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Aviator... These are all technically very proficient films. Well made films. But there's something missing.
It's frustrating, I really want to be able to put it into words but I can't. There's just something, I dunno, "so what?" about them...
Maybe it's like CConn suggests and he's a victim of his own success or maybe he just peaked too soon... but, yeah.

I kind of feel the same about Spielberg in some ways. He'll probably never reach the level of filmmaking that Raiders or Jaws was at again but even though he has stumbled a bit in the last decade (Indy 4) he's still put out some fine films.

Nothing was lacking in The Departed, IMO.
