State your unpopular film related opinion - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 32

Batman Returns has a very rushed and superficial romance compared to the first, that is for starters.
It's superficial in comparison to what? Full-fledged romance movies? Yes. It still a more interesting dynamic than in Batman '89.
Penguin lives in the sewers that are part of the Zoo river and has a lot of access to henchmen, technology, knowledge of all kinds, tape, toxic waste, etc etc....
Technology and knowledge of all kinds? Toxic waste? You mean like in Ninja Turtles? Awful, awful. Henchmen - we don't know enough to talk about it. But you can create some explanation if you put your mind into it. Jobless acrobats, maybe petty criminals that got under influence of Penguin. He gets access to technology mostly when he gets support of Shreck. Before that it's mostly some weaponry. There were probably some ways they amassed some resources over decades. And not just by sitting in the sewers. Sewers is just a hideout.
Having the batmobile schematics makes zero sense, and Batman punching through the reinforced bottom breaking it makes even less sense.
First part - perhaps a stretch, but I'll give you this one. On the other hand, Penguin worked in the archives, maybe he dug something out there. Similarly to The Dark Knight, only less explained. The second part isn't a stretch, since Bruce of all people should know the weak points of his vehicle.
Why did Gordon decide to flash the signal instead of calling more cops early in the movie? And how does Batman know where to go?
Where did cops disappear to in Batman '89 when Joker appeared and started his rampage in Gotham?
Penguin's move by remote control?
Brain-controlling devices in fiction and comics... NEVER HEARD OF IT.
Waterproof technology, and a giant duck elevator that goes up and fully appears out of a small manhole.
It's just a circus prop. Not sure what's the problem.
Max Schreck telling his son that he tossed Selina out of the window to call her is ridiculous and unnecessary.
We don't know anything about the relationship within the family. Chip seems to be into the business of his father.
Chip Schreck is almost completely useless and superfluous.
This argument is even less useful, since he's a minor character in service of a more important one.
Catwoman's origin is sooooo dumb, even before inspiring that trash Catwoman movie from 2004.
Catwoman origin isn't dumb. No need to drag Catwoman solo here.
Why did Batman stare at one victim for long while he was saving civilians and property?
Bruce took a liking to Selina after saving her. By that point the attack dispersed.
Bulletproof vest can be pierced by that small cheap custom added claw.
The movie clearly points that she was examining his breastplate to see where it ends. And then she stabbed him in the rubber on the side. It's seen even more clearly when Bruce is sewing himself in the cave.
All those effing umbrellas and the gadgets they contain, and they are owned by some vagrant in the sewers.
Oh my goodness, technology beyond the laws of physics. Unheard of...
And more.
I can write a lengthy list of try-hard "criticisms" for Batman '89 Cinema Sins style too. But I won't do that for reasons stated by other users in this thread.

My response to a lot of those points: who cares? I don't care how Penguin got his henchmen. Suspension of disbelief. Honestly, I think the movie is too old to ponder these things. It's a snapshot in time and it is the way it is. I love the vibe of the movie and the characters.

Indeed who cares, even though majority if not all of them can be explained. It's just irrelevant.

Batman Forever and Batman & Robin have funny statue fetishes to add to why they are hilarious. Who or why would anyone raise a tent by pillars with big statues? I don't think I laughed at that weirdness before today.

Gotta love the GIANT statues in the middle of the city

WTF? Is that The Motherland Calls (Родина-мать зовёт!) statue in the back???

Thank you. I've always thought Batman Returns sucked, mostly for these reasons. I think people just remember it fondly because 1. it wasn't as bad as the Schumacher Batman movies and 2. a lot of people went through goth phase in the 90s and as a result, give Tim Burton a pass even when he makes a bad movie.

It's entertaining, the characters are entertaining and otherwise well-done and the themes are really well-done. Plus it's so otherworldly and yet still involving that it's mostly able to make me overlook, not care about most of the contrivances and inconsistencies. For example it doesn't really make sense the sewers would lead to an arctic circus but what matters more is that the parents chose to abandon and try to kill the Penguin and so he'll seek revenge, it's pretty unbelievable and very out-of-nowhere to have controlled Penguins but what matters more is that he's willing that some of them won't survive the attack (and cynically, crazily acts as if they volunteered)-and then at the end some do still forgive him, bury him.

And it is particularly impressive compared to both the Schumacher films and B89 that it's very much not a crowd-pleaser and the villains very much aren't big actors mostly just semi-loveably acting goofy.

I also think Selina being revived and empowered by cats or something is a much better origin for her and her abilities, at least for a movie version, than just She Trained for a Long Time.

Black Panther is somewhat overrated...

Prepared to take all sorts of jabs and insults.

It’s a really solid film with good commentary but I just didn’t find it as brilliant as most view it

Why do the words Родина-мать translate to Motherland-Mother?
Good question. Nuances of Russian language. It's personification of "homeland", similarly to "mother nature". So it translates simply as "motherland". But in Russian language "rodina" can be translated as "motherland" too. It has the same meaning. But "rodina-mat'" is used less frequently, due to sounding more intimate, dear and emotional. "Rodina" is more neutral.

You're among friends here. It's an OK entertainer and it's a very good thing for diversity, but some describing it as the second coming on this forum is just laughable.

Thank you.

You are not alone in thinking that. I think it's very much the right film at the right time rather than the best film of all time.

Boseman is likeable in the lead but is totally overshadowed by the supporting cast. The final showdown feels very generic rather than epic.

I tried to watch Casino like three different times and I couldn't finish any of them. I guess that film is just not for me.

I read Casino and keep thinking of that James Caan show.

I feel like Waterworld wasn't as bad as people say. I mean sure, its over the top, derivative and Hopper chews the scenery like only he can, but that doesn't mean it wasn't entertaining.

Yeah. Agreed. I wouldn't call it a classic action flick, but it is entertaining - I think a lot of reviewers were influenced by the on set dramas ( including the cost - it's like as soon as a film looks to be the most expensive one made that critics start actively looking for flaws and setting up expectations).

They should have saved all that energy for The Postman.

Okay, now there's a very humdrum Costner flick. There are some good moments but I found it mostly kind of dull.

The central message, that government is about getting people together rather than just subduing them with thuggery, gets a bit lost.

Great performance by Will Patton as the villain - although he pretty much only plays variations on that character in every film or tv show he's in.

A good effort by Costner, but it falls very short of the mark.

Only non-villainous role I've ever seen Will Patton in was as the cop in the new Halloween.

It is a shame. There could have been something there I agree. Did you ever read the book? I wonder if its more engaging and coherent.

The Postman is one of the most unintentionally hilarious, bloated ego trips ever filmed.

I think you'll have to re-post this in the "State your Popular film-related Opinion" thread because I think the GA and critics pretty much agreed with you. :D

Dude ! In Armageddon he plays Bruce Willis' occasional sidekick, kind of like the occasional sidekick he plays in Gone In 60 Seconds and a variation of Denzel's coaching sidekick in Remember the Titans.
