MGM/Screen Gems Eye Kimberly Peirce To Direct Remake Of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’

EXCLUSIVE: Kimberly Peirce is in talks to direct Carrie, the remake of the Stephen King thriller about the telekinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students. Peirce is best known for helming another troubled female coming-of-age tragedy, the Hilary Swank-starrer Boys Don’t Cry. Carrie was previously turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta and Amy Irving, with Piper Laurie as the repressive mother. The script has been written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose rewrite work helped save Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark on Broadway. Aguirre-Sacasa set out to write a version of Carrie that is more faithful to the King book, and more grounded than the Brian De Palma-directed film. That kind of grounded material is something Peirce does well. She last directed Stop-Loss and is repped at CAA.

Can we even consider this a remake since it's really based off of a book?

I love the scene at the prom where she looks at each door and there's a shriek and it closes, so classically funny even though it's scary.

I hope it's sort of a mix of the Sissy Spacek and the TV versions. Both had elements that worked and didn't work.

Her name escapes me at the moment, but the one who played Hanna. She should be Carrie.

Saoirse Ronan? She's a fantastic actress, definitely a good choice. Others who I could think of for the role are Elle Fanning (but perhaps she's too young) and Mia Wasikowska.

Carrie Lead Narrowed Down To 2
Warm up the bucket of pig blood — we’re getting closer to finding us a Carrie! A gaggle of actresses have been reading for the lead role in Kimberly Peirce’s adaptation of Stephen King's book (which will reportedly hew closer to the source than Brian DePalma's 1976 horror classic), and now we're told the field has narrowed to two main contenders: the 15-year-old Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass) and the 24-year-old Haley Bennett, who is starring with Ryan Gosling in Terrence Malick's next project, Lawless.

These two sit at the top of a list of candidates that has included such young up-and-comers as Dakota Fanning (all growed up and, lately, a Volturi in Twilight), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Bella Heathcote (In Time), and Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror), who have all read for Peirce. We also hear that earlier this week, The Descendants' Shailene Woodley passed on an offer from MGM to take the title role.

Meanwhile, we're also told that for the role of Carrie's unhinged fundamentalist mother, Peirce has approached Jodie Foster and is interested in Julianne Moore. It's not so strange to aim for past Oscar winners for a horror flick: After all, both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (who played her mom) got nominated

Chloë Moretz is a bit too cute for the role. They need someone that's homely.

The make-up people can homely her up plenty. Moretz + Jodie Foster is some pretty good casting imo.

Besides Carrie wasn't fugly, she was just awkward and a bit dumpy and plain.

Jodie Foster and Mortez hollywood would be coming full circle in a weird way both got big breaks in controversial movie roles.
I havent read Carrie yet but plan to after I read all the other King books I got.

Chloë Moretz doesnt need this movie. look at her movies. she is way to good for a horror remake. and she was already in Let Me In.

If they must remake this, I would go with Dakota Fanning or better yet, her sister Elle.

I feel like most of the names being thrown around so far are in the same boat: too good for this project. They don't need it. That said, while I firmly believe she should (and will) stay away from this, Saoirse Ronan would be an awesome Carrie.

Carrie is so perfect as a horror movie and a high school movie. I don't know how they'll top it.

Why dump on this project just because it's a horror movie? Get some real talent attached and it could turn out to be a legitimately good film.

people are always complaining that horror movies are so cheap and bad. One reason is they always cast pretty but untalented folk. Try using quality actors for a change.
