Steven Knight's Serenity (Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway)

It's a typical film noir that goes completely off the rails by the half way point. I'm a big fan of Steven Knight's work (and Locke is one of my favorites), but he flew too close to the sun on this one. The whole movie (that starts out like a classic noir film) hinges on the twist that changes everything. I will say the some of performances are really good like McConaughey, Hathaway, and Hounsou in particular. The movie starts giving you odd moments before the twist so you do get a good sense of mystery in that first half. There's a lot of red herrings going on and when you do finally get to the twist you wonder if Steven Knight saw a particular science fiction show and wanted to do his own episode. I have to say I can't bring myself to hate it. The story overall doesn't make any lick of sense, but I did admire the ambition behind it. If you are gonna f*** up, f*** up this way. At least you can't say this movie was boring. Overall, it's a wild mess.

Okay...so the girlfriend said she wanted to see it, so we went.

Not as bad as I was hoping, to be honest. In fact, I'm glad that I knew the twist because SO MUCH that would have infuriated me about the characters etc made sense. It was not good...I just think I would have truly hated every second if I didn't go in knowing a few things.

The main thing I didn't like was the very end...it kind of didn't have the emotion that I think it wanted to have.

Seen a lot of talk about this bombing and I just keep thinking "Yeah, no ****" because I've seen literally ZERO TV spots leading up to its opening. I won't speak for quality, but of course no one is going to go see a movie that they don't even know exists.

The dialogue makes a LOT more sense when you know the twist kinda going in.

The plot twists sound pretty damn funny to me. Might have to check out this movie at some point.

Oh man. I had no idea this movie even came out. I'm half-tempted to read the spoilers.

EDIT: I read the spoilers. What the...?

There's no way that Wikipedia plot summary can be real... there's just no way.

WHAT

Well, on the plus side, it sounds like McConaughey and Hathaway found an even more pretentious pile of nonsense to star in than Interstellar.
