Steven Soderbergh is the latest name to be associated with a proposed big-screen adaptation of the 60's spy series The Man From U.N.C.L.E., according to a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

David Dobkin was most recently attached as a director on the project and the article suggests that he will remain aboard as producer along with John Davis and Jeff Kleeman. Scott Z. Burns, who worked with Soderbergh on both The Informant! as well as the director's next, Contagion, will likely do a rewrite on the script.

Robert Vaughn and David McCallum starred in the original NBC series as Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively. They were agents of United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), who fight the forces of Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.).

I'm guessing this will go a sort of comedic route rather than being an action thriller.

I've never seen the tv show but I'll probably skip this because I don't care for Soderbergh as a director.

Oh man I loved that show as a kid.

All I want to know is who will play Kuryakin, preferably a Russian actor.

I wouldn't mind some comedic moments...but wouldn't want it to be all comedy. I've been an UNCLE fan for decades.

Same here. Never heard of it before in my life and Soderbergh's best years are far behind him.

I've never seen the show, but I'm willing to give Stephen a chance.

I think he's been slipping in recent years, (more experimental films that are admirable but eh) but he's getting back on track with his latest offerings.

Can't believe the amount of people who have never heard of the show!! Loved this as a kid, always made me think Robert Vaughn would've made a helluva american James Bond. It has to be bordering on full on slapstick if they are going to model it after the show which included Alien threats, parrallel universe's and dancing gorilla's. Although I would love to see it go in a new direction something in between the books and the show.

what do you mean would've? That's EXACTLY what he was.

Due to his planned sabbatical/semi-retirement, there are only a few more Steven Soderbergh films planned for the time being. We saw his virus thriller Contagion hit theaters this fall, then there is his action flick Haywire this January, his male stripper movie Magic Mike next summer and then capping things off with his Liberace biopic. It now looks like we’ll see one less film from the director.

The Playlist is reporting that he has exited The Man of U.N.C.L.E., the spy thriller he was developing with Warner Bros. and his Contagion and The Informant! writer Scott Z. Burns. A spring shoot was planned for the film, but the makers could not agree on casting or budget.

It isn’t quite a surprising development, as it seems there has been almost weekly reports of casting changes including George Clooney, Johnny Depp Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Joel Edgerton, Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsgard. For one reason or another, Soderbergh or WB couldn’t agree on any casting decision.
The spy film had a $60 million budget and was set to become a trilogy, with WB even willing to push production all the way to 2013 with the lead being Matt Damon, when he is finally freed up, but Soderbergh was keen on going through his retirement plans by then.

WB will likely push the production while searching for someone else to helm, while Soderbergh is rumored to have another unknown project that could fill the gap before his Liberace biopic shoots. But that film, headed to HBO, will be his last for a good while. It is unfortunate, since this was the film I was most looking forward to out of his upcoming ones (aside from possibly Magic Mike) , but I’m eager to see what project will take up his time instead.

Damn.

I wasn't really interested in this but I was hoping for the parody version, The Man from A.U.N.T. (Agency Utilizing NanoTechnology).
