ANALYSIS: Even though the Robert Wise original musical West Side Story is about as sacred a cow movie as you are going to find, Fox has unlocked that movie title for a remake specifically because Steven Spielberg is interested in making it. No writer has been set yet and Spielberg hasn’t done anything more than register his interest, which traditionally has always been enough to get a studio hot and bothered.
Slightly worried/extremely curious to see how it would work.

Spielberg said that he will make at least one musical movie. after Lincoln he needs this.

:)

I'm all for it.

I don't usually have a problem with remakes of musicals because over the years the production and cast of these musicals changes anyways.

I have no attachment to the original whatsoever and I love Spielberg, so bring it on

I can't remember ever having seen it so I have no memory of it to be affected by his remaking it although I'm with childeroland in it likely won't happen. Spielberg has a lot of ideas and he can't make them all.

Technically, this is not a remake, as the first movie itself was an adaptation of a stage musical.

Still, I think it is unnecessary. If Spielberg wants to do a musical, I'd like him to do Sondheim's Follies. I feel that's up his alley. Or he can lend his weight to the planned film versions of Wicked or Pippin (Pippin I doubt can be successfully turned into a traditional film, but if anyone can do it Spielberg can).

In 1987, Spielberg was said to be interested in making the movie version of Les Miserables, which had just opened on Broadway. So he's been interested in doing musicals for a long time.

It is Spielberg. He can do whatever he wants.

I think the fact that West Side story is an adaptation of a play, that was a reimagining of Shakspere transformed into a musical, kinda makes anger over a remake pointless.

Now, I hope they do it in the style of "The Warriors" with a Score by Daft Punk. :o

To be honest, that sounds like a pretty good idea for a new musical. Although I'd rather have Jim Steinman score a Warriors musical.

What? No.

How about a movie version of Man of La Mancha instead?

Now that should be scored by Daft Punk, and take place in space. :awesome:

Spielberg is just chasing another Oscar at this point.

And he'll do anything, even resort to remaking a classic, to get it.

Because a Spielberg-direct West Side Story is sure-fire Oscar bait?

lol what nonsense...

Does it have it be a musical? Because otherwise they can cast Leto and Lupita for the leads. ;)

I am sure you are completely serious Spideyfan866, I just think you are way off base.
