For those unaware of it, Sunstone is a NSFW web comic featured on deviantArt with over 20 million views. It's drawn by Witchblade artist Stjepan Sejic and written by he and his wife.
It's a story about two women, Lisa and Ally who initially meet to experiment with bdsm...the story revolves around their journey together as they develop a relationship and explore the psychological and physical nature of trust and intamacy. It is most definitely NSFW, but the explicit scenes are handled with respect, class and a measured hand. I don't go for romantic stories and have no interest in fetishes, but none of that matters, as its the characters' emotional journey that is truly at the heart of the comic.
People keep calling it the "50 Shades of Grey" of comics, but that is an utter insult to Sunstone. Yes, bdsm is a shared theme, but in Sunstone, those aspects have a point - - sex is used as a metaphor for the physiological hurdles of growing up and the fear of honesty and trust; it's not used to exploit reader's desires, nor included for shock value...it's made especially clear that telling an honest, human tale is the whole point of the book.
I myself believed the "50 Shades of Grey" comparison and avoided it for quite a while, but I was pleasantly surprised to find Sunstone to be an extremely smart, funny, touching, and poignant comic. To call it an erotic comic is to call the Mona Lisa a caricature.
I can't link to it for reasons of language and partial nudity, but if you are a lover of indie comics, fully realized and charming characters, and philosophical musings about the nature of personal growth and relationships, I highly suggest you check it out.
