Matrix Rising
The story follows protagonists human Michael McIntire and M1-NK4, colloquially known as “Minka”. Michael is a somewhat hapless investment banker who has had the same robot servant, named “Minka” since about the age of 9. Michael is now in his late twenties with very few friends and almost no romantic life to speak of. While “Minka” is ultimately a servant, he treats her with admiration and respect as if she were an equal partner in their relationship. Their humdrum life is turned upside-down when B1-66ER, a local robot servant kills its master. As the paranoia begins to etch away at civil society, Michael risks his entire life to save “Minka” from destruction at the hands of the human race.
The story opens on a very young Michael McIntire on his ninth birthday. The scene is told entirely from his POV. His parents, who remain unnamed, get him a Nanny robot “M1-NK4”. Not knowing how to pronounce this, Michael instantly calls her “Minka”, the name that will stick with her for the rest of the film. Minka at this time is very bare bones.
Flash forward 18 years, and Michael is now in his late twenties. He is seen driving to work with “Minka” sitting in the car on the passenger’s side. Minka has been heavily upgraded, and now sports a human exterior. Michael has repurposed her as a servant robot. She looks like a beautiful twenty something year old girl. Michael is an investment banker, and judging from his demeanor has no strong attachment to his job. He lives in the suburbs of a very new Detroit, now one of the foremost banking capitals in the world. Upon getting to work he has a very awkward exchange, Michael thrusts some money upon her telling her to “get any upgrades she needs”.
Minka goes about her day after dropping Michael off. After leaving a robot service station which resembles an Apple Store, she runs into a small girl. The small girl talks to her as if she were human, and is subsequently hurried off by her mother. After the brief exchange, she picks up Michael presumably much later. Once home the two silently do dishes together. Michael goes to bed, and Minka goes into the living room and watches TV until Michael awakes the next morning.
This time after dropping him off at work, Minka notices she still has money left since yesterday, then, as serendipity would have it she crosses a beauty salon. Minka goes inside and gets her hair done, then enjoys a leisurely stroll through the downtown area where she buys a tie for Michael.
Back at work Michael eats lunch with his only known friend, a fellow employee named Daniel. Daniel is the only one, we find, in the office who knows for certain that Michael has been carpooling to work with a robot. Most assume the two are married. Daniel has many reservations about their relationship.
When Michael is picked up, Minka presents him the tie as a gift. He graciously accepts although he admits he hates ties and only wears them because of work. Before this most of the exchanges between Minka and Michael have been silent (for the most part). In a small act of humanity, Michael allows Minka to chose what music they listen to while washing the dishes that night.
The story crosses over to a different household. This one populated by an old obnoxious bastard named Mr. Krause, who owns several miniature dogs, and he is inquiring about the new Sam-80 series over the phone. Mr. Krause makes several very explicit references to “de-activating” his current robot named B1-66ER. B1-66ER is seen overhearing this phone call.
The next day we find Michael stranded at work because Minka has not picked him up. Michael is concerned, and Daniel offers to drive him home. On the way Michael and Daniel cross a heavily blocked off suburban street. The street is filled with cops, press and emergency response. Michael says he knows (of) the guy who lives in the house they are surrounding and gets Daniel to pull over. Michael sneaks through the barricade and gets close enough to peer inside the house. He sees Mr. Krause's dead body, along with the dead dogs. He sees the robot cuffed and being dragged out onto the street. Michael races back to Daniel’s car as has him quickly race Michael the rest of the way home.
When Michael returns Minka has worked herself up over the murder which has been playing non-stop on television. Michael is able to convinced Minka to come out of the locked bathroom, and the two sit down in the living room and talk things out. Minka was upset that Michael may deactivate her since she was an older model. Michael says he would never do such a thing, and explains why. Although she doesn’t fully understand the emotions involved, she trusts Michael.
Over the course of the next few days the two become immersed in the trail of B1-66ER, and both are crushed when it ends with B1-66ER being deactivated and being stripped of any rights he may have had.
Then the phone calls start. Michael gets one a day following the trail. As if they were extending an olive branch Matrix Technologies calls indicating a malfunction in the unit Michael owns. Michael denies any malfunction exists, and after a heated exchange, he hangs up the phone.
The next call is more pushy, as is the next, but Michael still refuses to turn in Minka. He keeps all of the phone calls from her, and continues to assure her that nothing will happen. That night he receives a phone call from the Government. They say they will be there the next morning to confiscate her, and if he does not comply he too will be arrested without trail. Michael quickly grabs Minka and the two rush to a junkyard. Minka knows something is up. Michael finds a scrapped robot with the same model as Minka.
When the Agents, one named Smith, arrive the next day Michael turns over the scrapped corpse which he has shot in the head and says it’s his robot. Michael also tells the agents that Minka is his lady-friend, and no one is the wiser. After the agents leave Minka still expresses fear, and doesn’t want to be left alone. The two share a bed that night.
The next day Minka goes to work with Michael as usual, and Daniel notices. Daniel immediately informs the authorities. On the drive back Minka notices cops swarm the house from afar, so she promptly turns back and heads to work. She comes to Michael at her cubicle, but agents have already figured out her location and are entering the building at the same time. As the two flee the building, the agents open fire killing Daniel in the process. Michael and Minka manage to escape.
That’s as far as I have detailed out. The rest of the story follows this general plot. As they flee the authorities the heightened sense of paranoia leads to violence. They initially take refuge in a small robot town, but it is eventually laid siege. While there they learn of a plan to evacuate to the middle east from the city of New Orleans, which has not been inhabited by humans for years. Michael makes his way down south with Minka. He manages to shuttle her through the city on foot and make it to a vessel called “The Ark” which the robots have built to save themselves. Michael is shot while entering the boat, and dies in Minka’s arms as the vessel departs for “ZERO One”.
Couple of notes:
*This'll follow the animatrix and comic continuities as best as possible.
*It's a direct prequel
*It doesn't get to the creation of ZERO One or the War.
*Minka was the name chosen because I could see Minka Kelly playing the lead female.
*The Agents that come to Michael's house will be/are human versions of the Matrix program Agents.
*Most of the events in the Animatrix are strictly background, they'll only be a few first hand scenes regarding B1-66ER's trial.
*There won't be anything regarding the Matrix's creation, however if I continued I would very much like to have Minka continue to be a large part of it.
*Michael will, in act 3, prove to have a little fight in him. He won't be Jason Bourne, but he will be scrappy and tough. Think Kyle Reese from Terminator.
*Minka is a bit of a damsel in distress. I don't want to make her too tough. I want to do something not done to much with robots in these types of movies, make a robot that is vunerable to humans.
*Daniel, Michael's friend, is comic relief for the first half of the film while he's alive. He's not too perverted, although he'll make some sex jokes about Minka. I'd think someone like Dave Chappelle when you try to characterize him.
*Minka and Michael never have sex. They do kiss/make out. If you're thinking to yourself "hey man, that's a little weird" -- yeah, it is, and is supposed to be. I think it's also an interesting way to blur the line some more.
*The story is set in 2090. B1-66ER is supposed to have happen in Albany, but I prefer Detroit as the location, I may change this.
*I did not make the future quite like Animatrix. This'll be a little more bare bones futuristic, like Akira. No flying cars. No security cameras on everything.
*Michael is a bit exesstential, and as the two get more personal he'll introduce some of the themes of the first movie, albeit in a slightly different fashion. While there on the lamb we'll meet "Merc" who lives on a self-sustained farm off the grid, he is Michael's cousin. Merc grows marijuana for income, and actually seems to support Michael and Minka's relationship. Stands in contrast to Daniel.
*Merc lives around Daniel Boone National Forrest near Lexington, KY. He is based on my roommate who actually has a bit of a pipe dream to become a mercenary (hence the name "Merc"). Merc is a big boy, big and strong. Merc has some backstory, but I probably will not discuss it much. He was a D1 athlete, and was a professional Football player for a very short period of time before being released from play. I base him somewhat on Ricky Williams, a wide receiver who smoked a ton of pot and went AWOL from the Dolphins.
