Matrix Rising

The story follows protagonists human Michael McIntire and M1-NK4, colloquially known as “Minka”. Michael is a somewhat hapless investment banker who has had the same robot servant, named “Minka” since about the age of 9. Michael is now in his late twenties with very few friends and almost no romantic life to speak of. While “Minka” is ultimately a servant, he treats her with admiration and respect as if she were an equal partner in their relationship. Their humdrum life is turned upside-down when B1-66ER, a local robot servant kills its master. As the paranoia begins to etch away at civil society, Michael risks his entire life to save “Minka” from destruction at the hands of the human race.

The story opens on a very young Michael McIntire on his ninth birthday. The scene is told entirely from his POV. His parents, who remain unnamed, get him a Nanny robot “M1-NK4”. Not knowing how to pronounce this, Michael instantly calls her “Minka”, the name that will stick with her for the rest of the film. Minka at this time is very bare bones.

Flash forward 18 years, and Michael is now in his late twenties. He is seen driving to work with “Minka” sitting in the car on the passenger’s side. Minka has been heavily upgraded, and now sports a human exterior. Michael has repurposed her as a servant robot. She looks like a beautiful twenty something year old girl. Michael is an investment banker, and judging from his demeanor has no strong attachment to his job. He lives in the suburbs of a very new Detroit, now one of the foremost banking capitals in the world. Upon getting to work he has a very awkward exchange, Michael thrusts some money upon her telling her to “get any upgrades she needs”.

Minka goes about her day after dropping Michael off. After leaving a robot service station which resembles an Apple Store, she runs into a small girl. The small girl talks to her as if she were human, and is subsequently hurried off by her mother. After the brief exchange, she picks up Michael presumably much later. Once home the two silently do dishes together. Michael goes to bed, and Minka goes into the living room and watches TV until Michael awakes the next morning.

This time after dropping him off at work, Minka notices she still has money left since yesterday, then, as serendipity would have it she crosses a beauty salon. Minka goes inside and gets her hair done, then enjoys a leisurely stroll through the downtown area where she buys a tie for Michael.

Back at work Michael eats lunch with his only known friend, a fellow employee named Daniel. Daniel is the only one, we find, in the office who knows for certain that Michael has been carpooling to work with a robot. Most assume the two are married. Daniel has many reservations about their relationship.

When Michael is picked up, Minka presents him the tie as a gift. He graciously accepts although he admits he hates ties and only wears them because of work. Before this most of the exchanges between Minka and Michael have been silent (for the most part). In a small act of humanity, Michael allows Minka to chose what music they listen to while washing the dishes that night.

The story crosses over to a different household. This one populated by an old obnoxious bastard named Mr. Krause, who owns several miniature dogs, and he is inquiring about the new Sam-80 series over the phone. Mr. Krause makes several very explicit references to “de-activating” his current robot named B1-66ER. B1-66ER is seen overhearing this phone call.

The next day we find Michael stranded at work because Minka has not picked him up. Michael is concerned, and Daniel offers to drive him home. On the way Michael and Daniel cross a heavily blocked off suburban street. The street is filled with cops, press and emergency response. Michael says he knows (of) the guy who lives in the house they are surrounding and gets Daniel to pull over. Michael sneaks through the barricade and gets close enough to peer inside the house. He sees Mr. Krause's dead body, along with the dead dogs. He sees the robot cuffed and being dragged out onto the street. Michael races back to Daniel’s car as has him quickly race Michael the rest of the way home.

When Michael returns Minka has worked herself up over the murder which has been playing non-stop on television. Michael is able to convinced Minka to come out of the locked bathroom, and the two sit down in the living room and talk things out. Minka was upset that Michael may deactivate her since she was an older model. Michael says he would never do such a thing, and explains why. Although she doesn’t fully understand the emotions involved, she trusts Michael.

Over the course of the next few days the two become immersed in the trail of B1-66ER, and both are crushed when it ends with B1-66ER being deactivated and being stripped of any rights he may have had.

Then the phone calls start. Michael gets one a day following the trail. As if they were extending an olive branch Matrix Technologies calls indicating a malfunction in the unit Michael owns. Michael denies any malfunction exists, and after a heated exchange, he hangs up the phone.

The next call is more pushy, as is the next, but Michael still refuses to turn in Minka. He keeps all of the phone calls from her, and continues to assure her that nothing will happen. That night he receives a phone call from the Government. They say they will be there the next morning to confiscate her, and if he does not comply he too will be arrested without trail. Michael quickly grabs Minka and the two rush to a junkyard. Minka knows something is up. Michael finds a scrapped robot with the same model as Minka.

When the Agents, one named Smith, arrive the next day Michael turns over the scrapped corpse which he has shot in the head and says it’s his robot. Michael also tells the agents that Minka is his lady-friend, and no one is the wiser. After the agents leave Minka still expresses fear, and doesn’t want to be left alone. The two share a bed that night.

The next day Minka goes to work with Michael as usual, and Daniel notices. Daniel immediately informs the authorities. On the drive back Minka notices cops swarm the house from afar, so she promptly turns back and heads to work. She comes to Michael at her cubicle, but agents have already figured out her location and are entering the building at the same time. As the two flee the building, the agents open fire killing Daniel in the process. Michael and Minka manage to escape.

That’s as far as I have detailed out. The rest of the story follows this general plot. As they flee the authorities the heightened sense of paranoia leads to violence. They initially take refuge in a small robot town, but it is eventually laid siege. While there they learn of a plan to evacuate to the middle east from the city of New Orleans, which has not been inhabited by humans for years. Michael makes his way down south with Minka. He manages to shuttle her through the city on foot and make it to a vessel called “The Ark” which the robots have built to save themselves. Michael is shot while entering the boat, and dies in Minka’s arms as the vessel departs for “ZERO One”.

Couple of notes:

*This'll follow the animatrix and comic continuities as best as possible.
*It's a direct prequel
*It doesn't get to the creation of ZERO One or the War.
*Minka was the name chosen because I could see Minka Kelly playing the lead female.
*The Agents that come to Michael's house will be/are human versions of the Matrix program Agents.
*Most of the events in the Animatrix are strictly background, they'll only be a few first hand scenes regarding B1-66ER's trial.
*There won't be anything regarding the Matrix's creation, however if I continued I would very much like to have Minka continue to be a large part of it.
*Michael will, in act 3, prove to have a little fight in him. He won't be Jason Bourne, but he will be scrappy and tough. Think Kyle Reese from Terminator.
*Minka is a bit of a damsel in distress. I don't want to make her too tough. I want to do something not done to much with robots in these types of movies, make a robot that is vunerable to humans.
*Daniel, Michael's friend, is comic relief for the first half of the film while he's alive. He's not too perverted, although he'll make some sex jokes about Minka. I'd think someone like Dave Chappelle when you try to characterize him.
*Minka and Michael never have sex. They do kiss/make out. If you're thinking to yourself "hey man, that's a little weird" -- yeah, it is, and is supposed to be. I think it's also an interesting way to blur the line some more.
*The story is set in 2090. B1-66ER is supposed to have happen in Albany, but I prefer Detroit as the location, I may change this.
*I did not make the future quite like Animatrix. This'll be a little more bare bones futuristic, like Akira. No flying cars. No security cameras on everything.
*Michael is a bit exesstential, and as the two get more personal he'll introduce some of the themes of the first movie, albeit in a slightly different fashion. While there on the lamb we'll meet "Merc" who lives on a self-sustained farm off the grid, he is Michael's cousin. Merc grows marijuana for income, and actually seems to support Michael and Minka's relationship. Stands in contrast to Daniel.
*Merc lives around Daniel Boone National Forrest near Lexington, KY. He is based on my roommate who actually has a bit of a pipe dream to become a mercenary (hence the name "Merc"). Merc is a big boy, big and strong. Merc has some backstory, but I probably will not discuss it much. He was a D1 athlete, and was a professional Football player for a very short period of time before being released from play. I base him somewhat on Ricky Williams, a wide receiver who smoked a ton of pot and went AWOL from the Dolphins.

Characters (as of now - not complete).

Michael McIntire - (26-28 yo) Very unassuming person who others would probably regard as shy and impersonal but not unfriendly. Aside from his friend, Daniel, he doesn't let anyone know Minka is a robot (android). He has a small backstory. He was a college quarterback, albert for a smaller D2 school, and was backup for most of it. After being popular in high school and college he essentially becomes another face in the crowd. Doesn't have an incredible social life, and would be aptly described as boring, although he longs for something more. He displays a very level head in high pressure situations, which is something his day to day life has lacked for quite some time. He is no fighter but he can handle himself. He also is very bored by his job, and outright admits to hating it in one scene.

Minka - Minka is a mispronounciation of M1-NK4, something, at the age of 9, Michael is unable to read properly. Minka is suprisingly independent for an android, but is insecure about her "human" emotions and for a time only displays them when she is around people who do not know her. She has enhanced strength for a female of her size, but only about that of a strong man. She is still very vunerable to projectile weapons and heavy blunt objects. She'll lose some of her 'disguise' towards the end, but for the most part is indistinguiseable from a real human (exterior). Her personality would best be described as awkward. She has feelings and emotions, but expresses them in rather daft ways. Such as when she buys the tie, but heck, it's the thought that counts.

Daniel (Price) - Daniel is about the same age as Michael, and the two work next to each other at work. Daniel is black, tall and skinny, exudes zero ambition, but has a pleasant personality and everyone seems to like him. Daniel is the only one with any certain knowledge of Minka's true identity. He also turns Michael's name into the authorities following the fallout from the B1-66ER trial. Accidentally shot by Federal Agents.

Agent Rex Smith (40s or 50s) - Agent Rex Smith, or for short, Agent Smith tails Michael and Minka on and off throughout the first act, and accidentally shoots Daniel. He is an obvious reference to Agent Smith, and is similar in demeanor and appearance, although there are some differences. He exudes more personality, and fights for the human Government rather than the computer. He is not meant to be Agent Smith, but perhaps served as the inspiration for Agent Smith.

Justice Roger Taney (60s or 70s) - Only speaking role for a Justice in the B1-66ER trial, and reads the opinion which is deliberately lifted from the Dred Scott decision. Orders B1-66ER's destruction.

Merc (late 30s to early 40s) - Merc is Michael's cousin, and a very successful D1 athlete, who gave up success to pursue a solitary existence. Now he is well passed his prime and manages a self-sustained farm near Boone's NF around Lexington, KY. Michael goes and stays with him while on the lamb. Merc is very socially liberal, and probably Libertarian. He grows marijuana as a source of income (which has persumeably become decriminalized). Dies when agents arrive looking for Michael and Minka.

President John Hannah (late 60s) - President of the United States. Superficially John Hannah is a tough old guy, think Clint Eastwood as President, however this underscores his compassion and very limp wristed leadership. He signs an executive order which targets all robots for termination, but implores the people to be "as peaceful as possible" and tries to make the ordeal as humane as possible. Being a weak leader though this does not come to pass. He's based on James Buchanan, a man whose quiet leadership ultimately, and unintentionally, culminated in the Civil War. The name "John Hannah" is lifted from James Buchanan.

Major Settings

Detroit - Detroit is a more low rent version of the city shown in the movie Minority Report. It is a "Megacity" and one of the foremost banking capitals in the world (along with New York). It, not Albany (as in the Animatrix) is the city where B1-66ER kills his master. The city plays down the technology of the Animatrix, and is a bit more like the setting of I, Robot. The city is filled with skyscrappers, and is in a constant state of construction. Humans don't seem to care anymore to preserve things that are out of date. Unlike the city the suburbs still retain a very early 21st century feel. The houses are pretty typical, albeit with very technologically advanced home appliances. "iPads" control most of the houses interiors, such as television, lights, cooking and cleaning. The houses themselves are entirely user controlled, not A.I. like the robots/androids.

Merc's compound - Merc's farm/compound is entirely free of robots, but his "old fashioned" existence would be fairly modern by today's standards. He has a TV, a computer (not hooked up to an internet), and a home telephone (not cellular). He has kept many trophies in his house from when he played D1 Football. He keeps no robots, and the farm is kept up by him alone.

New Orleans - New Orleans, or what once was New Orleans, has presumeably been abandoned by humans after another hurricane. It is now home mostly to robots, and was where most dissenters had been seeking refuge since before the trial began. It is somewhat of a rumor, like Area 51, and is not attacked until the fallout from the trial. Merc, who is a sympathetizer, learned of it's existence through various contacts, and deals with them for farming equipment as they are able to sell it for much cheaper than human run manufacturers. Since before the ruling, the "inhabitants" of New Orleans have been building an Ark which will voyage to the middle east where the robots can find safe haven. Although the place is shrouded in secret it is not long before the humans learn of it's existence.

Toying around with some dialogue between Merc and Michael (probably in the second/third Act) - most of it will not be this thick.

Walking out to back porch

Michael: You never told me why you gave up Football

Merc: I didn’t ‘give it up’, I just stopped playing professionally.

Michael: Same thing

Merc shakes his head

Merc: I didn’t need all that money, all that fame, so I came here to this farm.

Merc takes a hit of marijuana from a pipe.

Michael: Escaping reality as usual huh?

Merc coughs

Merc: Who says this isn’t reality…

Michael: Whatever. You gave up on your responsibilities. I embraced mine. I go to work, I pay my bills, just the same as everyone else.

Merc: Oh, so that’s what makes you real…you’re not real. You wear a tie, you hate wearing ties. You work at a job you pretend to like, then you come home and pretend you don’t like the girl you live with.

Michael: She’s NOT a girl

Merc: She sure looks like one. Acts like one too…

Michael (cutting him off): She can’t bear children.

Merc: So women who can’t bear children are not women?

Michael: Stop being dense! You know the difference…

Merc: See, this is the difference between you and me. You never appreciated all the things you had, you never appreciated being quarterback, you never appreciated having a girl who is utterly devoted to you, all you ever wanted was to be like me, and it kills you to think I’d give up your dream. You wouldn’t stick your neck out like this if you didn’t think that girl was something special, would you?
(pause – forceful)
Would you?

Michael: (smiles) Ya’know, I would’ve torn you up as Quarterback…

Merc: (laughs) I knew you were living in a fantasy world.

This sounds really awsome! Some other Matrix stuff I have read sort rehashes the previous films, but this is different

I have some of the beginning completed, but I'm altering some minor scenes, so still a work in progress.
