Study says the smarter you are, the less friends you have

I wanted to make that joke. :(

The average IQ on here is probably 120. The average Maturity Quotient... 78.

According to all these Bookface quizzes my "friends" take they are all some of the smartest people to grace this rock. I feel honored to know so many geniuses. :o

I have family members that have been telling me how smart and intelligent I am since I was about 4, so this would explain a lot, actually.

I believe it. I have a friend who is super popular and has a ton of friends on Facebook, but she doesn't know who Dick Cheney or Putin are. I had to explain to her about ISIS as well.

She also lacks loyalty. I think the smarter people with fewer friends are more loyal, because they know the value of quality over quantity. This friend of mine cares so much that other people like her, she won't stand up for a friend in order to "keep the peace." But she expects others to go to bat for her.

What if I have no friends, but am also stupid?

Don't believe in IQ being a great way of 'testing' intelligence. Intelligence comes in very many ways, IQ favours the scientific, mathematical, logic mind not the creative, expansive, verbal mind so by default it sends a wrong message in my opinion.

I hate the word intelligence, it always gives a view of superiority for someone to possibly 'lord it' over someone else, in a 'I'm more intelligent than you' way, when the truth is it's probably all based on life chances, luck and the dice that life rolls you.

A good chunk of what IQ is to most people is just a number we can use for comparisons. So you have an IQ of 150. Nice. But unless you are also an astrophysicist, that stat does you no good except looking like an assh***.

Warhammer beat me to it.:funny:

Except, sadly, some people are more intelligent (capable, possess more aptitude, however you want to phrase it so it doesn't offend you) than others. Just like some people are more apt to pursue something athletic, or artistic, or logical than others are.

This

The book, Outliers, explains this perfectly. It's not about being the smartest, it's about being smart enough, recognizing opportunity, and being extremely lucky. There is a guy in the US who has an IQ over 200 and he's a farmer in Missouri. He tried to do more with his life, but lack of funds and support kept him out of the schools that he would have flourished in. Your environment is much more important to whether or not you're successful than your intelligence (he's also not a very charming fellow).

And it's pure luck whether or not your environment is supportive of your goals. Bill Gates is humble enough to acknowledge how many things in his life had to go right in order for him to be successful. The rags-to-riches story of success is a lie. Yes, working hard is essential. Yes, being smart or athletic is essential. Yes, taking hold of opportunity is essential. But no successful person got to where they are on their own and it took a lot of the stars lining up for them to get there. It all starts with when you're born, nothing that you can control.

So the next time some rich businessman talks about how he shouldn't be taxed more because he built himself from the ground up with no help and worked hard, you can laugh. He's full of ****.

One IQ test told me I have 124, another told me I'm a 127, a third one told me I'm a 90, a forth one told me I'm 100, and I can't solve a lot of puzzles most of the time.

I must be really smart I just hide it perhaps too well.

I cannot do those What Pattern Comes Next puzzles. They drive me insane.

It differs. You can be smart and have lots of friends at the same time, you just need some good social skills and if people think you're a know-it-all, its probably best not to show-off your intelligence like all the time.

By all accounts no one is really stupid. Someone may not be book smart, but they may have better social skills than you ever will.

And even "book smart" has a lot of different dimensions. Most people have subjects they specialize in. This doesn't have to be in a professional setting, either. It can be knowing everything about your favorite band. Everyone has their own fields of interest. Very few people know a lot about everything.

Of course on the opposite side of that there's the willfully ignorant ones who refuse to learn, grown or evolve. :p
