Styx: Master of Shadows smuggles 14 minutes of footage out of E3

I'm all for fantasy worlds that don't demonise their gobliny or orcish races, so I remember being pretty curious about Cyanide's Of Orcs and Men back in the day, despite middling reviews eventually putting me off. I have a feeling Styx: Master of Shadows is going to be harder to resist. The third-person stealth game takes Of Orcs' sneaky goblin Styx and gives him his own game set in a massive tower. I mentioned itback in January, but now a big dollop of in-game footage has appeared, giving us a proper look at how it actually plays. I have a few concerns, but it's nice to see a stealth protagonist - shuns the sunlight, lurks in the darkness - actually looking the part for once.

New Trailer for Styx: Master of Shadows

If you need your daily fix of goblins, take a look at the latest trailer for the new stealth fantasy game Styx: Master of Shadows. Styx is a Goblin two centuries old... the very first of all the Goblins, he's a master in the arts of stealth, theft, and murder. The depths of the miles-high Tower of Akenash, where Humans and Elves hide and protect the Tree, the source of the Amber, are the best chance Styx has of quickly amassing a small fortune and, perhaps, discover more about his true origins along the way.Battle your way to the top of the lofty Tower of Akenash through immense and vertiginous levels that highlight the vertical perspective. You will complete numerous missions with various objectives as you climb up – murder, information recovery, theft of precious artifacts, etc – and gradually reconstruct the puzzle that provides the key to the mystery of your origins. The levels are open and the objectives can be completed in various ways: you are therefore free to choose the best way to proceed and the most suitable strategy to employ to achieve and complete your mission objectives. But remember you’re a Goblin: if your target is twice your size, or more, you’re better off eliminating them silently and in the back!
Styx: Master of Shadows will hit the PS4, PC, and Xbox One later this year.

Styx: Master of Shadows trailer reveals October release for the gobliny stealth game

I've written about Styx: Master of Shadows before now, and I find myself more interested every time Cyanide and Focus Home release a new bit of footage. It's important to keep Cyanide's previous games in the equation, but I like what they're trying to achieve with Styx's seemingly rather open and tongue-in-cheek approach to stealth. A bit of humour and a few new tricks can go a long way.

Gaming has seen more variations of goblins than is worth counting, but developer Cyanide Studio has effectively managed to take a tired troped out character and turn it into something unique. Typically when it comes to goblins, they serve as little more than early-game sword fodder, but Styx is an entirely different breed. The developers have acknowledged the traditional limitations that come with goblins, namely their strength capabilities in a one-on-one combat situation.

As such, Styx takes on a more indirect approach to taking down enemies and regularly provides a distinct amount of snark, wit, and just enough fourth wall breakage while doing so. Styx: Shards of Darkness looks to build on its predecessor in just about every way from its more advanced engine allowing for increased level verticality, and larger bestiary and an all-new story told through cutscenes that highlight Styx's personality.

The video above also reveals co-op gameplay, a first for the series. You and a friend can tackle a level together, allowing for some very smooth double assassination action, provided you are in sync of course. The co-op gameplay brings its own challenges along with it too since, as the developers say, having two players presents twice the number of opportunities to raise the alarm.

Styx: Shards of Darkness releases on March 14th, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

I'm actually quite excited for this one. I picked up the first Styx last month and had a really fun time. Definitely one of the more underrated stealth games out there.

The potty mouth goblin known as Styx will be making his inglorious return later this month in Styx: Shards of Darkness, the follow-up to 2014's Master of Shadows. One of the sequel's newest and most exciting features is the inclusion of a drop-in, drop-out co-op mode that lets two players concoct any number of different strategies to quietly carve out a path for themselves amongst enemies.

While the co-op certainly presents its share of emergent gameplay opportunities, it should be noted that the game does scale up the difficulty, allowing more chances for you and your partner to raise the alarm. After all, it wouldn't be much fun if you just coasted through it all, would it? Every level and mission in the game are playable in co-op, so the game is doubling its play time with the added co-op feature.
Styx: Shards of Darkness will release in full later this month on March 14th, 2017.
