Hello all,
I am looking to subscribe to a Spider-Man comic, and trying to decide which one. I love the classic Spider-Man comics the most. The original Stan Lee ones and Death of Gwen and all that. Do you think Amazing Spider-Man is the way to go? And what exactly is the difference between Amazing and Spectacular?

Okay, honestly, if you love the old school feel of the Spider-man comics, you should subscribe to Sensational Spider-Man. It's the only book that really deals with anything that's happened in the past, and the only one that still seems to regard continuity with any respect.

If you don't like Sensational, I recommend Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It went through a very BAD period, but it has really picked up quite nicely in the later issues, and it's shaping up to be a decent read.

Amazing would be a good book to which to subscribe...in about 4 months. It's not that the book is THAT BAD right now, it's just that the book is more about "shocking events" than it is about good storytelling. Wait until the next writer comes on board in about 5 issues before adding it.

Also, if you are subscribing, I advise against doing it through Marvel. They tend to put the comic in with a board, and then they bend the board in the mail, thus, bending the comic. I'd recommend subscribing through www.Midtowncomics.com or visiting your local comic book shop and starting up a pull list.

For all I know, you may have meant subscribing through your LCS, anyways, but just in case you didn't, I figured I'd forewarn you.

As for older ones, yeah, the ols ASM, SSM, and Web of were great.

Also, the difference between Amazing Spider-man and Spectacular Spider-Man is that they are two different series. That's all.

Couldn't disagree more. I put a full size mailbox on my house, and it never gets bent. Talk to your mailman and tell him what you want. They can be pretty cool. I'm not saying that they'll all come in in perfect condition, but I want to read them, not put them under glass in the Batcave.

The biggest issue with not subscribing to ASM is that some events that happened in that title (IE: The Black Custome, "death" of SM etc.) would just pop up in the other titles and will be a bit confusing, of course you can allways just read spoilers if you want to save money.

If you a big event kind of guy I say ASM, if you like continuty more in Spidey relationship with the supporting characters (MJ, Felecia, May, Flash etc.) I would say go with sensational. I'm not a big fan of FNSM, mostly because I don't really care for the art much.

I would say picking up Ultimate won't be a bad idea as well, its a fun book to read and I enjoyed almost every issue since it started, its not perfect and Bendis does screw up occasiounaly, but overall its a very good book. Its also a standalone book, so you'll get all the events of Peter's life in just 1 book.

Of course the best suggestion will be to go to marvel.com and check some of the online comics, and just subscribe to the book you enjoyed most there. All the online issue have the same writers that currently write the books, so its a nice way to see what is your taste.

Yeah, I would suggest going through a local comic shop instead of going through Marvel to get new comics. I think that ASM is not in the best of shape right now, but that will change as soon as JMS is off in a couple of issues. The only current Spidey titles I read right now are "Friendly Neighborhood" because I enjoy the work of Peter David, and "Amazing Spider-Girl" just because it adds some new perspectives on the results from that 90's disaster known as the clone saga. I prefer back issues of ASM to any other comic, so hopefully this new writer will make the series "readable" again. BTW, I wish that Marvel never cancelled the "Spectacular" line.

try subscribing at your comic shop
also try marvel adventures spider-man
