While Sony no longer seems to have the iron grip on third-party exclusives that it seemed to last generation, it's hard to argue the talent found in its stable of first- and second-party developers, most of whom are now hard at work on a bevy of impressive-looking PlayStation 3 titles. One of the developers whose mysterious new title had not yet surfaced was Sucker Punch, the team that brought us the Sly Cooper trilogy on the PlayStation 2. At Sony's E3 press conference, Sony COO Phil Harrison finally broke the silence on what the developer is doing next.
Sucker Punch's new PS3 game, Infamous, is a beautiful action game that Harrison described as a sandbox game. In it, gamers take on the role of a fledgling superhero who can take on the role of a shining beacon of hope, a la Superman, or a dark-and-deadly antihero, such as the Punisher. Based on the brief footage shown at the event, your potential superpowers include shooting blasts of energy from your hands that can knock over vehicles and cause satisfying explosions, and leaping around the city while crawling up and down buildings.
The game left an impression that was a bit like Crackdown but cranked up to 11 and with a much darker storyline. It's a big shift from the cel-shaded happiness of Sly Cooper, but it's also an instant contender for most exciting new next-gen IP.
