I feel this might be a little to big for the stupid question thread but here goes...

I'm planning out a binding project (where I bind comics together into my own hardback trades) and I had a thought... the History of the Marvel Universe.

I'm not talking the little handbooks or whatever, I mean collect as much of Marvel's history, prior to superheroes, in chronological order. I don't want flashbacks, only issues that took place in that time period. Modern heroes who had been transported in time is fine as long as the book takes place back then.

So my question is... what comics could I pull? I've started it with the X-Men line but I'd like to expand it. So far I have (in what I believe to be chronological order):

Rise of Apocalypse 1-4
Black Knight: Exodus
Further Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix 1-4
Gambit 12-14 (Sinister following FAoC&P)
X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula 1-4
Marvels 1
Weapon X 14 (Sinister during WWII)
Uncanny X-Men 268

I wouldn't mind getting a Captain America story from WWII but I don't know what to use that would work. I'd want his creation and his being frozen and Bucky's death but I have no idea what comics I'd use for that. Maybe some Celestial/Deviant/Eternals stuff?

But again, it'd have to be comics that take place completely in the time period. So, any thoughts or recommendations?

The Thing becomes Blackbeard.
Iron Man and Doc Doom travel to Camelot.
Johnny, Sue, She-Hulk and Nick Fury travel to 1939 to kill Hitler.

Just some events off the top of my head.

Interesting. Do you know off hand what issues those would be contained in? The Iron Man/Doom story was around Acts of Vengeance wasn't it?

Oh, just thought about Origin... and maybe the original Weapon X plot.... hmmm.

Isn't there something with the Inhumans?

Wasn't there something with a Ghost Rider from the old West or something or was that flashbacks?

The Acts of Vengeance story took place in Iron Man #250 and in the year 2093. It was the original story's sequel and/or spiritual successor.

I see. I've never gotten into Iron Man and just remembered the cover.

I should also note that I'm hoping to find more modern comics, not reprints from the 40's or 60's or anything like that. Modern takes on history.

Brubaker and Epting did a Golden Age book a couple of years ago. I can't remember what it was called.

Oh yeah... The Marvels Project I think. I never read it but it might be worth looking through.

You should get the S.H.I.E.L.D series by Hickman. It covers Marvel in the late 1950s and it's ancient past. I think the 1960s to , but I haven't read the second volume. There's also Red Skull : Incarnate and Magneto : Testament if you want a look into 1930s and 40s.

This is a reading order for the Marvel Universe comics, it contains stories from the very begining of the Marvel Universe like the the Asgard tales, and many Kull and Conan stories.

I'm iffy on S.H.I.E.L.D. because it's very recent and part of a larger story. Is it finished? Is there going to be another volume? I haven't followed it in the slightest so I have no idea.

Red Skull and Magneto, however, are brilliant!

I'm thinking there's a link missing here :)

Was the Marvels Project good? Completely in the past? And from what to what did it cover?

The current issues of Thunderbolts has part of the team traveling around to different points in the past.

Oh yeah, they are aren't they? What eras or situations are they finding themselves in?
