I haven't been paying attention to the budget. What does SS need to make to break even? Can it break even with say Ant-Man numbers or did they spend a fortune?
THR had a quote from an insider that said it needs to do between $750m-800m to break even.

Yes and no.

Are you more apt to listen to a film critic or a friend?

Depends on the friend. A few know exactly what types of films I like, so I take their recommendations very seriously. Others...not so much.

Well folks, I had an absolute blast. I don't know what these critics want.

The Hollywood reporter reported it needed 800 mil WW to break even. It might fall 200 mil short of that now that China is off the table.
I am going to go out on a limb and say these early numbers are showing an early excitement that even if it drops like a stone next weekend, it won't do under $650m. I also think it might have better legs overseas then BvS because of the "fun" factor.

Now I'm confused. I answered the question honestly. How am I being a jerk?

You know I meant that people are more apt to trust their friends, trying to make it about certain friends over others was unnecessary and entirely misses the point of my post.

I just maintain my previous motto: trust the person who paid to watch the film over the one who was paid to watch it.

I'd rather trust the person who's seen more than the same 5 blockbusters over and over.

They spent $175 million on this one, so I'd say probably $600-$800 million would be the sweet point. Ant-Man numbers would be a disappointment.

Factor in the reshoots and you're looking at over $200m for this.

Mark Hughes says that the 800M to break even thing is false. He says the number is around 600M. I'll take his word since he talks to WB almost daily

Except it isn't necessarily true. It depends on the friends. What if the friends I trust, never even saw the film. That's happened many times. What if I didn't trust any of my friends tastes?

It is an answer that is more complicated than you make it out to be.

i admittedly don't know as much about production cost and b.o. as most of you, but i can't wrap my head around it needing 600 million to break even. that's truly stunning to me and i'm slightly surprised the movie even got green-lit at hearing that number, it just seems like a big mountain to get up before you're even out of the gate.

I tends to take his word with a bit of gain of salt. He writes well but also comes across as very pro-WB.

But would you trust THOSE friends over the critics?

If yes then you are still trusting your friends opinions over what a critic says. That's because you know what your friends like and if their taste suits yours.

That's the point. Trying to make it more complicated then what I previously posted is again, unnecessary. Either way you are still trusting a friend more than a critic. I never said you had to trust ALL of your friends.

So while my point was simplified, it is still correct.

For the record, I don't trust my friends' tastes at all. I have one friend who thinks Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation are the two worst Mission: Impossible films, a sentiment I cannot relate to on any level.

Still, I'd say $600-$800 million WW is what they should be aiming for. Anything less than $600 million would be a failure.

I don't get it. It's like you guys are looking for stuff to gripe about, if it isn't freaking out over critical reviews it's picking apart what people say.

Just got back from seeing it, I'm so glad I got to see it for free.

Yeah I dont really trust my friends opinions on movies either. Or music for that matter

You just gotta trust yourself

yeah, what didn't you like thorson? or are you just a thrifty guy.

Apparently DC movies need huge box office numbers to break even. I never hear the same about Marvel films oddly enough. Wonder Woman has around the same budget as Captain America and Thor yet I'm willing to bet we'll get these insane BO numbers "in order for it to break even" that we didn't get with the Marvel films. Weird...
