Super Mario Maker Gets Vocaloid With Senbonzakura. October 12, 2015 . 11:30am

A Super Mario Maker player has recreated the opening bars of Hatsune Miku’s Senbonzakura in the Nintendo Wii U game.
[YT]liIo8UTu3zE[/YT]
Shortly after Super Mario Maker launched, people began using the note blocks to create compositions. Depending on the placement of the note block in the editor, as well as the story of enemy or item dropping onto it, different sounds can be made. Chained together, this creates a song. Many of the musical endeavors have tapped into iconic game music, but now a user by the name of Chagama has recreated a Vocaloid hit.

In Chagama’s Super Mario Maker level, players can hear the opening bars of Hatsune Miku’s “Senbonzakura.” It’s only about 12 seconds worth of music, but given the complexity of that performance, it’s still an impressive feat.

“Senbonzakura” has appeared in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F and Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX. If you’d like to see the performance in Super Mario Maker or check out the rest of Chagama’s work, input the level ID: DDAB-0000-0068-3AA9 in Course World.

NBA 2K16 leads software sales.

Sept-2015-NPD.jpg

U.S. video game sales results for the month of September 2015 are in.
General Consumers spent $1.01 billion on software and hardware in September 2015, down nine percent from the $1.10 billion spent during the same period last year.

Hardware sales were down 27 percent from $431.2 million to $313.5 million.

Software sales dropped three percent from $480.6 million to $465.6 million.
“The majority of hardware platforms increased their sales from August 2015 to September 2015 when comparing sales on a per week basis,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. “All eighth generation consoles [which includes PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U] experienced double-digit growth when comparing sales on a per-week basis.”

Top ranking standalone software for the month include:

  1. NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3) – “For 8th generation software, NBA 2K16 had the best launch month ever for any Sports game,” via @firstadopter

  3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)

Sony
PlayStation 4 was the best selling console and lead software sales for the month of September.
“As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September,” a Sony spokesperson told VentureBeat. “PlayStation 4 was the number one console for NBA 2K16, Madden NFL 16, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and FIFA 16. Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for Destiny: The Taken King.”
“It was also a very strong month for PlayStation Network with September being the highest grossing month in PlayStation Store history. From PlayStation exclusives like the recently launched Uncharted Collection to partnerships with Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Star Wars Battlefront, we are committed to our community and to making PlayStation the best place to play this holiday.”
Microsoft
“Xbox One continued to see strong momentum in September on the heels of Forza Motorsport 6 and EA Sports FIFA 16, with solid year-over-year growth in console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live,” Xbox marketing corporate VP Mike Nichols said in a statement. “This holiday Xbox One owners will enjoy the greatest games lineup in the industry and in Xbox history, led by Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Star Wars Battlefront, and the ability to play Xbox 360 games. Xbox One owners will have all of this on the fastest, most social Xbox experience ever with advanced hardware such as the Xbox Elite Wireless controller. Xbox fans and first time console buyers can look forward to an epic holiday.”

Through the first nine months of 2015, sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware have increased by nearly 25 percent over the same time frame in 2014. (based on this statement, 3DS sold 129,000 units in September.)

Wii U
Super Mario Maker update to add mid-level checkpoints, new courses on November 4
Published 11 hours ago. 12 comments.

Event Courses will feature levels from partner creators outside Nintendo.

Nintendo will release a free software update for Super Mario Maker on November 4 adding mid-level checkpoints to stages, as well as “Course World” categories that highlight new levels from Nintendo and partner creators outside Nintendo.
Get the details below.
Mid-Level Checkpoints

With the addition of mid-level checkpoints, users now have the option to add flags to their levels, allowing players to start at the selected point if they lose a life – rather than having to start over at the beginning of the level. Players can choose to edit and re-upload their own levels, or create new levels from scratch using this feature. Shaking an arrow sign item from the course parts palette will allow you to place a checkpoint flag.

Status-Dependent Power-Ups
Following the update, players can also insert power-ups that are dependent on Mario’s status. For example, by attaching a Super Mushroom to a Fire Flower and placing it inside a block, Mario will receive the Super Mushroom when he is small, and the Fire Flower when he is large.

Event Courses

The software update also introduces Event Courses in the game’s Course World online hub. Event Courses will feature levels from partner creators outside Nintendo. One of the first Event Courses will be “Ship Love,” the winning level from the “hackathon” event that was held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park earlier this year. Facebook is the first outside partner in the United States to design a level for Super Mario Maker; employees had the opportunity to design and present their creations to a panel of judges before the winning level was selected.
The level that was featured in the final round of the Omegathon event at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo event will also be available for players to experience shortly after the update goes live. New Event Courses will be added to the listing on an ongoing basis, some of which may even feature new Mystery Mushroom transformations. Additionally, a new Official Makers section in Course World will be added after downloading the update, featuring specially selected courses, including some created by Nintendo.
Super Mario Maker launched for Wii U on September 11. To date, players have uploaded more than 3.3 million levels globally.

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino Super Mario Maker Level Playable On November 4. October 28, 2015 . 11:30am

A level created by Shinya Arino, from Game Center CX, will be available in Super Mario Maker’s Events section on November 4.

Nintendo is preparing a Super Mario Maker update for the Nintendo Wii U that includes the ability to see Event levels in the online Course World database by clicking a Toad icon on the screen. Among the levels available when the feature launches will be one created by Shinya Arino, host of Game Center CX. This level, called “Arino Maker,” will be available to play in all regions. (Thanks, Kyle McLain!)

The Super Mario Maker update video released by Nintendo in Japan shows a brief glimpse of the level description for Arino’s endeavor. It doesn’t provide a tour, but the preview shows an underground area that involves quite a bit of jumping, as well as two paths to the goal post. The upper path appears to provide players with a one up.

The Game Center CX “Arino Maker” level will be available to play starting November 4, the day the update is applied to Super Mario Maker. Keep an eye out for the katakana title, “アリノメーカー” if you’re having trouble finding it among the other Event levels in Course World.

Super Mario Maker Level Recreates Yoshi’s Woolly World’s Perplexing Pyramid. November 16, 2015 . 11:30am

A recent Super Mario Maker level not only recreates a level from Yoshi’s Woolly World,
but demonstrates proper Checkpoint Flag usage.
[YT]kgU-dq7qoGI[/YT]
People have been using Super Mario Maker to recreate levels from games like Mega Man and Contra, but it isn’t often we see a more recent release revisited. However, Layne has taken on that challenge and recreated a level from Yoshi’s Woolly World.

In Yoshi’s Woolly World, there are special levels you can unlock in each world if you have enough flowers. “Perils of the Perplexing Pyramid” is the second such level in the second world. Layne has perfectly captured the feeling of that original area in which Yoshi needs to activate a number of switches remotely. Except in the Super Mario Maker version of the level, this is done with enemies.

This Super Mario Maker level also displays proper Checkpoint Flag usage, in case someone was wondering the best means of using the mid-level save points.

The Yoshi’s Woolly World Super Mario Maker level can be found using the level ID E5E7-0000-00EA-D89B.

Freaking Mario Maker. I feel like this game has taken over the gaming universe. There's something about making the components for a game, and letting the player decide how to make his or her own adventure is what makes the beauty of Mario Maker so incredible. It's more or less just like talking about Minecraft, to an extent Tell Tale Games, and other choose your own adventure titles. It's all about the player's own creativity. It stretches to make new adventures every time they pick up a controller, instead of taking the same route to get the same ending.

Super Mario Maker’s Next Event Course Costume Promotes Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. December 1, 2015 . 10:30am

Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario are teaming up for a Super Mario Maker costume.

The next Super Mario Maker costume has been revealed. In addition to amiibo-related outfits for Mario, which are added by tapping a NFC figure to the GamePad, the Nintendo Wii U game gets Event Course costumes from time to time. These are available worldwide for a limited time as a reward for clearing a course, and Nintendo of Europe has revealed a Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam costume is the next one.

It has a lot in common with the The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes costume for Super Mario Maker. It transforms Mario into a trio featuring a Mario and Luigi inspired by the Mario & Luigi RPG series and Paper Mario. It will also be earned after beating a level inspired by the game, with this Event Course designed by the Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam development team.

The current Super Mario Maker Event Course costume is Frog Mario. It’s acquired after playing a level inspired by NES Remix. The Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Event Course will come to Europe on December 12. All previous Event Courses have received simultaneous worldwide releases.
