In the latest edition of Polygon’s “Devs Make Mario” video series, La-Mulana and La-Mulana 2 director Takumi Naramura tried his hand at creating his own Super Mario Maker level, despite admitting to not being very familiar with Mario games in general.

“I used the type of traps that spring when Mario approaches, the ones where an enemy falls from above, and tried to build them in with a timing that you don’t see in your usual Mario game,” Naramura said. “I worked hard on that timing, and just when I started to run out of ideas, I began creating a stage that harasses the player—and started having a lot more ideas!”

To hear more of Naramura’s design process, as well as see a full playthrough of his finished level, you can watch the video below.

“I care a lot about players’ comprehension of a game,” said Vollmer. “So a big part of this level is that you can crawl around it on every side and sort of take in what the game is going to be before you actually jump in and start playing it.”

Super Mario Maker Update 1.43 Slightly Alters Searches. May 20, 2016 . 10:00am

The latest update to Super Mario Maker offers a new difficulty level when searching for Course World levels and adjusts the Star Ranking list.

4 comments Read >

A new update has come to Super Mario Maker. While bringing the Nintendo Wii U game up to version 1.43 hasn’t added any new content, it has altered the way people can look for levels to play in Course World.

To start, there’s a new difficulty filter. When people are searching for a Super Mario Maker level, “Super Expert” difficulty is now an option. Previously, “Expert” was the highest rank.

Course World’s Star Ranking List has been altered as well. People used to be able to check for courses by organizing them according to either “Weekly” or “All-Time.” “All-Time” is now the only option. In addition, the Star Ranking list of levels will now be sorted by, as NIntendo puts it, “courses that have received the most stars relative to the number of people who have played them.”

Super Mario Maker is immediately available for the Nintendo Wii U. People will need to download the 1.43 patch in order to continue playing online.

Here’s the official description of the Event Course:
“Sanrio characters Kitty and Melody find themselves in the world of Super Mario! At first it seems like a fun place, with cute blocks shaped like apples and flowers. But they’d better be careful, because there’s danger up ahead! Won’t you help them find their way safely to the goal?”

In the videos below, GameXplain plays through the Hello Kitty and My Melody Event Course, and also gives us a tour of the costumes’ animations and sound effects. It is worth noting that players must complete the course twice to unlock both the new costumes.

It's Super Mario Maker... for your 3DS!

Super-Mario-Maker-3DS-Ann.jpg

Nintendo has announced Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. It is due out on December 1 in Japan, and December 2 in North America and Europe.

The game comes with 100 original courses from Nintendo, which contain “Medal Objectives” that range from collecting every coin to defeating all enemies before reaching the goal. You can also go online to play courses made using the Wii U version, though not every course created in the Wii U version will be compatible with the 3DS release. You won’t be able to search by course ID, but you will be able to enjoy the 100 Mario Challenge and Recommended Courses, as well.

As for course creation, the 3DS version includes every tool and part available in the Wii U version, save for the Mystery Mushroom and his associated Mario costumes, which are exclusive to the Wii U release.

You won’t be able to upload courses online in the 3DS version, but you will be able to share them via Local Play and StreetPass. You can also share incomplete courses via local wireless to team up and complete courses with other players.

Super Mario Maker For 3DS Erases Save Data If Used On More Than One 3DS. December 23, 2016 . 10:00am

The Super Mario Maker Nintendo 3DS save data is tied to the system’s SD card, which means people can’t use one cartridge and its save data on more than one system.

31 comments Read >
People playing Super Mario Maker on the Nintendo 3DS may run into some trouble if they wish to share one physical copy of the game with multiple users. Nintendo has issued an official notice regarding the game’s save files. If someone has a Super Mario Maker Nintendo 3DS cartridge and use it in a system different from the one on which the save file was created, the save data on the cartridge will need to be erased to begin playing the game on the different system.

This is due to the way save data in Super Mario Maker works on the Nintendo 3DS. When you begin using the game, new save data is created on both the cartridge and SD card. You need both files to continue playing. If someone else uses that cartridge and wants to play on a different Nintendo 3DS, the save on the cartridge must be completely erased and a new one created to go with the SD card data on the second device.

Super Mario Maker is now available for the Nintendo 3DS.

<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, it was another week without any top-20 new releases in Japan, but we did get to see an impressive race between Pokémon Sun & Moon and Super Mario Maker for 3DS for the second week of 2017. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker, Media Create, with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of January 2 through January 8, 2017.

Top of the list is Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS at #1 with 100,308 copies sold in the week. The game has been butting heads with Pokémon Sun & Moon since its release, and while Mario builder game saw the bigger margin of increase in sales two weeks ago for the Christmas week, it fell shy by less than 20k in sales for the New Year’s finish line. However, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is already starting the year strong being the only title to hit 100,000 units in sales for the week in 2017 thus far.

In #2 we have Pokémon Sun & Moon at 90,298, which should be considered a pretty good follow to the week prior that saw 90,891 units sold, showing that it is maintaining a pretty good pace for the start of 2017 and putting it past the 3 million mark in retail copies sold in Japan alone. Momotaro Dentetsu 2017 placed #3 with 47,905 copies sold.

At #4 we have Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition that is there to make a statement with 32,031 copies sold, showing that it doesn’t have plans to step out of the top-20 anytime soon. Miitopia has also been following closely with 23,867 in sales that week, an increase over its 18,259 units the week prior, making it the only title not named Super Mario Maker in the top-10 to have more sales than the week prior.

The hardware front shows a little increase in console sales with PS4 going from 73,421 to 78,927, the New 3DS LL bumped from 45,809 to 54,645, the PS Vita from 25,487 to 34,023, and even the 2DS, PS4 Pro, New 3DS, Wii U, and PS3 all saw an increase in sales. Well, everyone except the Xbox One which went from 221 to 180. Perhaps this could just be a follow up in sales from otoshidama as mentioned in our previous sales report. Japanese consumers have also been spending more money in January of recent years compared to past, so that could also have something to do with it. It should also be noted that the regular 3DS and 3DS LL numbers are no longer included.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:

Sales data acquired from 4Gamer and Media Create.

No Amiibo support, and no online with friends. You can play random people online, but you can't setup levels with friends.

That confuses me, because the way they describe LAN play, is that you create a room, and only one switch needed to be online. At least is sounds like couch coop is available.
